This publication reports on analytical data from a large-scale experiment, using 3360 Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., distributed into 12 sea cages. Salmon were grown from an average 600 g to an average 3.5 kg. Samples for analyses were taken when fish were in the range of 1.8 and 3.5 kg. Dietary changes between groups were increased starch from 24 to 230 g kg?1 and balanced with protein. The diets were isolipic. All salmon showed small stores of glycogen in all analysed organs, and only in heart, gills and kidney of large fish (3.5 kg) were the levels correlated with dietary starch. Minor differences between groups were found in liver NADPH production, but with substantially decreased NADPH production per g protein as the fish grew from 1.8 to 3.5 kg, indicating that increasing dietary starch did not lead to induction of liver hexokinase, and that the activity of this enzyme may decline as fish size increases. An increase in plasma glucose concentrations was found as dietary starch increased, but all levels were moderate and ranged within reference values. Plasma total protein concentrations did not, however, vary according to decreased dietary protein, but increased substantially in all groups as the fish grew from 1.8 to 3.5 kg. Dietary treatments had no influence on haematological parameters, except for decreased haemoglobin concentrations as dietary starch increased in large fish (3.5 kg). No impared liver function was detected, evaluated by activities of ASAT, ALAT and LDH, and by histological analyses. Low serum lysozyme activities were recorded in all groups, and were not correlated with plasma glucose or liver glycogen concentrations. 相似文献
The composition of seminal plasma and metabolism of sperm of the cyprinid fishAlburnus alburnus were investigated. Statistically significant correlations were found between motility parameters and seminal fluid osmolality, pH, Na+, K+ and protein levels (negative correlations: % immotile spermatozoa-Na+, K+; positive correlations: % motile spermatozoa-osmolality, pH, Na+, K+, protein; % linear motile spermatozoa-pH protein; swimming velocity of spermatozoa-pH, Na+, protein). Spermatozoan motility and ATP metabolism and glycolysis were correlated as indicated by measurement of ATPase, pyruvate kinase, adenylate kinase and lactate dehydrogenase activity. The physiological meanings of these correlations and their possible significance for quality control of semen are discussed.Abbreviations used ACP

Hydroelectric dams can alter downstream water temperatures, impacting thermal habitat available for fishes. Decreases in river water temperatures resulting from hydroelectric dam operations may be beneficial to coldwater species and could potentially offset warming resulting from climatic trends. We used two coldwater fish species, Slimy Sculpin (Cottus cognatus) and Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) to assess the impact of a cool water draw below a 15 MW hydroelectric dam on fish thermal habitat use relative to a nearby naturally flowing river. Cooler water temperatures below the dam corresponded with significantly cooler mean growth season temperature use for Slimy Sculpin, but not Brook Trout, relative to the natural river. As well, mean growing season temperature use by Slimy Sculpin was significantly cooler relative to Brook Trout in both rivers, and significantly different amongst studied sites in the regulated river. Fish condition was significantly correlated with temperature use for Slimy Sculpin in the naturally flowing river only. Our results indicate that manipulating river water temperatures through hydroelectric dam operations to benefit multiple fish species will be difficult given the complexity of riverine thermal habitat and species‐specific differences in thermal preferences and behaviour. 相似文献
High variability among individuals is often encountered when hemocyte characteristics are measured in bivalves. Such variability is suspected to result partly from genetic factors. In this study, hemocyte characteristics of six families of Crassostrea gigas were compared by flow cytometry at one sampling date in October 2001. These families were obtained from a nested, half-sibling cross design, and reared from July to October 2001 at three sites distributed along the French Atlantic coast from north to south: Baie des Veys (Normandy), Rivière d'Auray (Brittany) and Ronce (Marennes-oléron Basin, Poitou Charentes).
Among the 15 measured hemocyte characteristics, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) of untreated hemocytes (maintained in filtered sterile seawater) and treated hemocytes (zymosan at 20 particles per hemocyte, and with Vibrio sp. S322 at 50 bacteria per hemocyte) was the most notable differences between families. This supports the existence of a genetic basis, at least partly, for the hemocyte characteristics of oysters, and especially for ROS production.
Among the six families analyzed, three have shown high survival during summer (named as “resistant”, mean mortality 5.2%) and three experienced high mortality during summer (named as “susceptible”, 30.6% mean mortality). Families showing high or low survival to summer mortality had similar hemocyte characteristics, regardless of the environmental conditions or reproductive state. Resistant families were observed to have higher total hemocyte counts and lower production of ROS than susceptible families. Moreover, ROS production of hemocytes from susceptible families was diminished significantly more by pathogenic Vibrio than that of resistant families. However, this study demonstrates also that rearing site strongly affected the hemocyte characteristics of all families of oysters, most notably hemocyte concentration and morphology (size and granularity), production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and susceptibility to the cytotoxic activity of the pathogenic Vibrio sp. S322 (50 bacteria/hemocyte). Food availability and reproductive state are the most probable explanations for the site differences observed. Finally, it appeared difficult to link oyster survival during summer mortality to hemocyte profiles evaluated at one sampling date; other relevant indicators would probably help explaining oyster survival during summer mortality events. 相似文献
The metabolic physiological response to body mass, temperature (12–28 °C) and salinity (20–36 g L?1) was examined in this paper. Oxygen consumption rate, which is dependent on environmental conditions, was exponentially related to body mass and varied from 0.045 to 1.11 mg h?1 g?1. Oxygen consumption rate increased as salinity increased from 20 to 36 g L?1, and increased with increasing temperature. The effect of temperature gradient between experimental treatments on oxygen consumption rate was evaluated by calculating Q10 (the Arrehenius relationship for increase with temperature). The Q10 value within the temperature range from 12 to 16 °C was much higher than the value within the temperature range from 16 to 20 °C, 20 to 24 °C and 24 to 28 °C, indicating a reduced temperature dependence of ascidian metabolism at a high temperature. 相似文献
Species responses to climate change are often measured at broad spatiotemporal scales, which can miss the fine-scale changes that are most relevant to conservation and fisheries management. We develop a scaleable geostatistical approach to assess how juvenile and adult fish distributions have been shaped by changes in bottom temperature and dissolved oxygen over a recent decade of warming in the northeast Pacific. Across 38 demersal fishes, biomass trends were associated negatively with warming and positively with dissolved oxygen, but when trends in both biomass and climate were converted to velocities—the speed and direction a population would have to move to maintain consistent conditions—the effect of temperature change differed depending on local conditions. In the warmest locations, warming velocities were associated with negative biotic velocities for 19 of 69 species-maturity combinations, and yet were almost always associated with stable or positive biotic velocities in the coolest locations (64 of 69). These spatially consistent biomass declines (negative biotic velocities) in the warmest locations and increases in cooler locations suggest a redistribution of species with the potential for new ecological and fisheries interactions. After controlling for temperature, the more spatially consistent effects of dissolved oxygen were often negative, suggesting a mechanism other than hypoxia avoidance—potentially changes in primary production. Our approach identifies the species and locations that are most sensitive to observed changes in the environment at any scale, thus facilitating future vulnerability assessments. 相似文献
The cytosol and nuclear extract of gill tissue obtained from laboratory held Atlantic salmon,Salmo salar manifested saturable cortisol binding of high affinity and low capacity (cytosol: Ka = 0.198 ± 0.024 × 109/M, Nmax = 116.8 ± 20.8 fmol/mg protein; nuclear extract: Ka = 0.823 ± 0.057 × 107/M, Nmax = 1563 ± 330 fmol/mg protein; n = 4). The cytosol receptor activity displayed high steroid and tissue specificity and a single
binding peak at 191,000 Da following gel permeation chromatography.
Atlantic salmon exposed for 3 or 8 months to waters from the Medway River (pH about 5.1), the Westfield River (pH about 4.8)
and calcium carbonate treated Westfield River (pH about 5.6) showed no gill cytosol receptor activity. Cortisol receptor activity
in the gill nuclear extracts from fish in limed Westfield River water in December (3 months) was less than half the activity
in the fish treated with Medway River water (p < 0.05) although the plasma cortisol values were not different. In May (8 months),
the plasma cortisol of fish in limed water was almost twice that of the fish held in acid Westfield River water (p = 0.058). 相似文献
