Abstract

Field and greenhouse studies were conducted to identify starter fertilizers which would enhance cotton seedling survival, growth, and yield in legume residues. Field studies were initiated in the fall of 1982 on a Norfolk sandy loam (Typic Paleudult) in the Upper Coastal Plain of Alabama. Winter annual legumes, crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.) and hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) were established as whole plots along with a winter fallow area. Split plot treatments consisted of O, N, P, K, NP, NK, and NPK starter fertilizers. The cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) was planted with a conservation tillage planting unit with in‐row subsoilers. The starter fertilizers were applied deep (8 to 10 inches) in the subsoil track. Greenhouse studies were also conducted with soil from whole plot areas top dressed with corresponding legume tissue at a rate of .9 g tissue/500 g soil. Seedlings in the greenhouse were rated for disease and emergence, and dry weights were recorded.

Cotton populations in field studies were lower in legume mulched than fallow soils in 1984. Application of starter fertilizers generally increased harvest populations, particularly the NK combination. In 1983, cotton growth was greater in vetch than other soils, but responses to starter fertilizers varied with analyses and years. Seed cotton yields were consistently high with P starter, although P did not always improve cotton stands and growth. When averaged across years and cover crops, yields were 3151, 3031, 2865, 2790, 2753, 2741, 2512, and 2364 for P, NP, P, NP, K, NPK, N and O, starter treatments respectively.

Greenhouse studies indicated that starter fertilizer improved cotton emergence in legume soils, but decreased emergence in fallow soils. Disease ratings of emerged seedlings were more severe when starter fertilizer was used than when it was not used. Thus, starter fertilizer increased emergence and survival, despite high disease ratings. Cotton seedling growth generally increased when poor emergence reduced cotton seedling competition.  相似文献

利用从兰州地区红三叶 (Trifolium pratense L.) 和白三叶(Trifolium repens L.)根际分离、 筛选获得的4株植物根际促生细菌(代号:A-Hsg、 B-ls1 3、 C-lhs11、 D-lhs14) 制作微生物接种剂,采用盆栽法测定不同接种剂处理对红三叶草生长特性及品质的影响。结果表明,本研究制作的接种剂符合《农用微生物菌剂》质量标准(GB 20287-2006)。复合接种剂处理AD对红三叶草株高、 根长促进作用显著 (P0.05),分别较对照增加33.62%和46.20%。AB和AD处理红三叶草地上植物量增重显著,较对照增加了101.69%和94.98%。BC和AD处理对地下植物量增加显著,增加了197.63%和151.18%。AC、 AD和BCD处理后红三叶草整株磷含量均高于对照,其中BCD处理较对照差异显著(P0.01),磷含量较对照增加了15.38%。ABCD处理红三叶草整株的含氮量较对照达到了显著水平(P0.05),较对照增加了14.77%。ABD、 BCD和ABCD处理均可提高红三叶草地上部分粗蛋白含量,其中处理ABCD粗蛋白含量较对照增加最多,增加了14.62%,达到了显著水平(P0.05)。复合接种剂AD、 AB、 BC、 AC、 ABD、 BCD和ABCD接种后,对红三叶草生长特性和品质的提高表现出良好的促进效果,可作为复合菌肥材料作进一步研究。  相似文献

Optimum plant densities are a key to maximise yields in most crops. However, such information is often lacking for more environmentally sound cropping systems, such as living mulches (LM) for small grains. In 2004 and 2005, three trials were conducted in the Swiss Midlands on fields managed in accordance with the Swiss organic farming guidelines. The objective of the study was to determine whether seeding density of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a relevant factor for determining grain yield in a white clover (Trifolium repens L.) living mulch. The winter wheat cv. Titlis was directly sown in wide spaced rows (0.375 m) at densities of 300 (LM300), 450 (LM450) or 600 (LM600) viable grains m−2 in a white clover living mulch established at a seeding rate of 15 kg ha−1. A bare soil control treatment with a wheat density of 450 viable grains m−2 (BS450) was also included in the trials. Mean grain yields of LM300, LM450, and LM600 never reached the values observed in BS450. This was mainly due to a lower ear density, which, nevertheless, increased linearly with the seeding density within the living mulch in all trials, but the rate of increase depended on the environment. The decrease of the grain weight brought about by the increasing seeding density had only a marginal impact on the grain yield, which was increased from 1.31, 1.98, and 4.09 Mg ha−1 (LM300) to 1.97, 2.64, and 4.75 Mg ha−1 (LM600) for each of the three trials in the study. Significantly higher protein contents were observed for LM300 compared to the higher densities in the living mulch and to BS450. Our research showed that an increase of the seeding density is an effective mean to increase the grain yield in living mulch systems with white clover. However, it is likely that the control of the living mulch to reduce competition with the main crop is a more relevant factor.  相似文献

Interspecific hybrids between white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and Caucasian clover (Trifolium ambiguum M. Bieb.) have been developed to introgress the rhizomatous growth habit into white clover, to increase persistence and drought tolerance. The forage quality of T. repens, T. ambiguum and the backcross 1 (BC1) and backcross 2 (BC2) hybrids and companion grass, when grown in mixtures with an intermediate perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) under a cutting‐only management, was measured. In vitro dry‐matter digestibility (DMD), water‐soluble carbohydrate (WSC) and crude protein (CP) concentrations of the legume and grass fractions were measured throughout the growing season over three harvest years. Trifolium repens had a lower WSC but a higher CP concentration than the perennial ryegrass companion in all harvest years and at all cuts. The legume fractions from the BC1 and BC2 hybrid plots had a higher WSC and a lower CP concentration but an in vitro DMD value comparable with white clover throughout the growing season and in each harvest year. The grass fractions from the mixtures with the backcross hybrids had a higher WSC and a lower CP concentration than the grass fraction from the T. repens plots, in all harvest years and throughout the growing season. No difference in in vitro DMD between parental species and backcross hybrids was observed. The implications of these results for the development of these hybrids and animal performance are discussed.  相似文献

The roots of red clover plants inoculated with the vesicular‐arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus clarus Nicolson & Schenck were treated with a drench of benomyl at a time when mycorrhizal infection was already well established. Benomyl halted further infection and reduced phosphorus inflow by one order of magnitude compared to untreated controls. The fungicide also decreased the rate of plant growth probably as a consequence of reduced phosphorus inflow.  相似文献

The cation exchange capacity of roots (CECR) has been measured according to three different methods : titration of H‐roots with NaOH in the presence of CaCl2, MgCl2, or NaCl 0.1 N, saturation of roots with mixed Ca‐Mg‐Na solutions of eight different compositions and extraction of the adsorbed cations with copper, saturation of roots with Cu‐ions and extraction with HC1. Two types of roots were studied : roots of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lm.) and roots of clover (Trifolium pratense L.)

The very good coincidence of the results from the three methods tends to prove the reliability of the experimental procedures. The simplicity and the reproducibility of the Cu‐method renders it recommendable in view of possible standardization of the methods in the future.  相似文献

The aim of the present investigation was to study the effect of white clover (var. Milka and Donna), red clover (var. Fanny) and ryegrass (var. Tove) undersown in winter wheat on a succeeding oat crop. Under the climatic conditions prevailing in Sweden, growing a catch crop after winter cereals is of particular interest because the latter are usually followed by a spring sown crop, leaving the ground bare during autumn and winter. Field trials were carried out during three growing seasons in an integrated farming system and for one year in an organic farming system. Competition from the dense wheat crop in the integrated farming system had a negative effect on the undersown species, and at harvest of the wheat they showed quite poor growth in all three years, with nitrogen contents under 5 kg ha?1. No significant yield increase was measured without added nitrogen when the averages for all three years were calculated. On average, the grain yields were improved by 750 kg ha?1 (14% moisture content) for the treatments with undersown clover for all three years when 90 kg N ha?1 were added. The experiment within the organic system showed a different pattern with a better development of the undersown clover species, with nitrogen contents approximately 25 kg ha?1 and an improvement in oat grain yield, from around 2?000 kg ha?1 for the control to almost 3?500 kg ha?1 with clover undersown the previous year.  相似文献

Abstract

Acquisition of carbohydrates and their partitioning to storage organs are decisive attributes for the persistence of perennial leys. It was therefore of interest to analyse radiation-use efficiency (RUE) and root allocation (br) in one-, two-, and three-year-old red clover–grass leys as functions of growth period (first and second growth, ley age), proportion of clover, and site properties (location, soil type, humus content). By calibrating RUE and br, the ley yields simulated with a growth model were adjusted to the values observed during two consecutive years at 33 organic farms located in the southern and the northwestern coastal regions of Finland. Driving variables of the simulations were daily measurements of weather. RUE declined from the first to the second growth and further with ley age, while its variability increased. The value of br decreased from the first to the second growth, and was positively correlated with RUE. The high variability of RUE between different sites, and the absence of correlations between site properties and RUE, were mainly attributable to differences in overwintering and regrowth conditions. Early measurements of above-ground biomass subsequent to overwintering and cutting, and the inclusion of site-specific measurements of soil properties would have increased the general validity of the calibrated parameter values. RUE correlated positively with proportion of clover. However, the increase of the proportion of clover from the first to the second growth was not strong enough to balance the concurrent decline of RUE. With increasing ley age there were two concurrent and reinforcing patterns, namely a decrease in proportion of clover and in RUE. Thus, both symbiotic N fixation and vigour of perennial red clover–grass leys declined with ley age. With regards to RUE, however, three-year-old leys were still productive.  相似文献

Abstract

In order to improve the basis for utilizing white clover (Trifolium repens L) in northern agriculture, we studied the effects of defoliation intensity on spring growth in a sub-arctic climate in relation to carbohydrate and nodule status. White clover plants (cv Snowy) were studied in a pot experiment in the field on the coast of northern Norway from spring 2001 until spring 2002. The experiment was repeated with some modifications from spring 2002 until spring 2003. During the growing season from summer to autumn, the plants were totally stripped of leaves down to the stolon, cut at four or seven cm height or left undisturbed. The plants were sampled destructively in autumn, early spring and late spring and sorted into leaves, stolons and roots. The plant material was weighed and analysed for carbohydrate reserves and nodule number. Defoliation during the growing season resulted in reduced concentration of reserve carbohydrates in autumn and reduced winter survival of the stolons. The most severe defoliation treatment reduced the herbage growth in spring. In contrast, the two milder defoliation treatments had no effect on herbage growth during spring or on total plant dry matter and nodule status in late spring. In conclusion, moderate defoliation during the growing season had no effect on herbage growth the following spring nor on carbohydrate, nodule or dry matter status of the plant in late spring. Moderate defoliation increased spring growth and thereby also the nitrogen demand of the plants. This probably enhanced nodule formation and development of inactive to active nodules.  相似文献
