Shape stability of modified engineering wood product subjected to moisture variation

Abstract

A modified softwood product would enable the utilization of softwood in new areas. Densification is an old modification method to improve wood properties such as hardness and resistance to abrasion. A major problem with densified wood is, however, its ability to retain its original dimensions under the influence of moisture. Therefore, this study investigated the influence of surface to bottom layer thickness ratio on the shape stability of a modified and three-layered cross-laminated engineering wood product (EWP) subjected to moisture variations. The study describes a simple solid wood densification technique based on compressing a clear solid piece of softwood with vertical annual rings in the radial direction by restraining the tangential expansion. Three-layered cross-laminated EWP was manufactured with the densified wood as a surface layer. The recovery of the densified wood in the surface layer was then reduced to movements in the same level as the other two layers of unmodified wood. The EWP was subjected to climatic variations in order to investigate its shape stability. The results disclosed that an appreciable degree of shape stability was obtained by an increase in the surface to bottom layer thickness ratio of the EWP.     

Consumer perceptions of environmental and social sustainability of wood products in the Finnish market

Abstract

Consumers in today's world can perceive an additional benefit associated with responsible business practices and the sustainability of purchased products. However, in Scandinavian context, there is a lack of knowledge of consumer perceptions toward environmental and social sustainability of wood products. Our data on adult Finnish consumers (private end-users) (N=227) were collected during 2004–2007 as interview exit data from home retail centers selling building materials. The perceived environmental and social sustainability of wood products was investigated using exploratory factor analysis, and the phenomenon was observed to be a two-dimensional construct consisting of “General environmental and social sustainability” and “Specific social sustainability” reflecting strong consumer need for product safety. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the “General” dimension also explains the consumer's self-declared willingness to pay for sustainable wood products. The results also indicate that the respondents may be segmented based on their perceptions on product level environmental and social sustainability: the most environmentally and socially conscious group can be profiled by gender (female), older age, and summer cottage ownership.

后疫情时代乳制品结构的转变

我国乳制品消费结构发展不平衡,液态奶产销量占比过重,大量干乳制品需要进口。本文基于2016—2020年乳制品的消费结构占比,分析了我国目前乳制品的发展阶段、各乳制品的进口量对比,并结合乳制品新产业政策及理化性质分析预测乳制品市场的新走向;利用主成分分析法建立关于食物营养的评价模型,计算各乳制品得分以评估其营养素含量高低。研究结果表明,我国乳制品消费结构正从第二阶段向第三阶段过渡,我国奶酪制品的市场需求前景大;目前,我国大部分奶酪制品依靠进口,但国外奶酪制品的口味不被我国大部分消费人群接受。因此,具有较高营养价值和口感好的干乳制品在中国有着较大的发展潜力,同时,我国消费者正从“喝奶”向“吃奶”转变;对乳制品的现状及营养成分进行分析,可指导适合我国消费者的新产品研发。
