Experiments were conducted to study the effects of density on growth and biomass partitioning of Leucaena leucocephala seedlings.Four plantations with densities of 10,000,20,000,40,000,and 80,000 seedlings ha^-1 were evaluated only from 15 to 25 months after planting.At 15 months,crown height and width decreased with increasing density.Seedling height/dbh ratios increased with increasing density.Biomass increased with greater density according to the yield–density effect equation,which was evident for all densities.With increasing age,biomass division to branches and leaves increased,whereas partitioning to roots decreased in the 10,000 and 20,000 seedlings ha-1 plantings.Partitioning to branches and leaves remained relatively steady,while partitioning to roots increased in the 40,000 and 80,000 seedlings ha^-1 plantings.Biomass division into stem and bark components remained relatively steady in all densities.Yield–density and organ yield–density curves shifted upward with increasing seedling age on a log–log graph throughout the experimental period.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to evaluate the intake, digestibility and nitrogen balance of diets for finishing sheep, containing leucaena hay as a source of effective fibre and forage palm. Twenty-one male sheep were used in a randomized block design with three treatments, represented by total diets, where the forage was leucaena hay and forage palm in natura in proportions 350:650, 450:550 and 550:450 g/kg respectively. For the pH and NH3-N in the ruminal fluid, and urea in the blood serum, plots split in time were adopted. Dry matter and nutrient digestibility, and the nitrogen balance were not influenced (p > .05) by the diets. The neutral detergent fibre digestibility decreased (p < .05) as the proportions of leucaena hay in the diets increased. The pH and NH3-N were suitable for ruminal fermentation, and blood urea was maintained under normal physiological conditions for sheep. Combining 350 to 550 g/kg of leucaena hay with 450 to 650 g/kg of forage palm in total diets with a forage:concentrate ratio of 60:40 in late-maturing sheep meets the nutritional requirements for daily gain 200 g, characterizing leucaena hay as important source of effective fibre and nutrients in diets.  相似文献

Scanty information on long-term soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics hampers validation of SOC models in the tropics. We observed SOC content changes in a 16-year continuously cropped agroforestry experiment in Ibadan, south-western Nigeria. SOC levels declined in all treatments. The decline was most pronounced in the no-tree control treatments with continuous maize and cowpea cropping, where SOC levels dropped from the initial 15.4 to 7.3-8.0 Mg C ha−1 in the 0-12 cm topsoil in 16 years. In the two continuously cropped alley cropping (AC) systems, one with Leucaena leucocephala and one with Senna siamea trees, SOC levels dropped to 10.7-13.2 Mg C ha−1. Compared to the no-tree control treatments, an annual application of an additional 8.5 Mg ha−1 (dry matter) of plant residues, mainly tree prunings, led to an extra 3.5 Mg C ha−1 (∼0.2% C) in the 0-12 cm top soil after 11 years, and 4.1 Mg C ha−1 after 16 years. The addition of NPK fertilizer had little effect on the quantities of above-ground plant residues returned to the soil, and there was no evidence that the fertilizer affected the rate of SOC decomposition. The fact that both C3 and C4 plants returned organic matter to the soil in all cropping systems, but in contrasting proportions, led to clear contrasts in the 13C abundance in the SOC. This 13C information, together with the measured SOC contents, was used to test the ROTHC model. Decomposition was very fast, illustrated by the fact that we had to double all decomposition rate constants in the model in order to simulate the measured contrasts in SOC contents and δ13C between the AC treatments and the no-tree controls. We hypothesized (1) that the pruning materials from the legume trees and/or the extra rhizodeposition from the tree roots in the AC treatments accelerated the decomposition of the SOC present at the start of the experiment (true C-priming), and/or (2) that the physical protection of microbial biomass and metabolites by the clay fraction on this site, having a sandy top soil in which clay minerals are mainly of the 1:1 type, is lower than assumed by the model.  相似文献

The efficacy ofLeucaena leucocephala root litter as a natural biological fertiliser was assessed usingZea mays as a test plant. Up to 8% of the fine roots of the plants constituted root litter. This fine root litter was better than that ofTrigonella foenum-graecum at increasing the growth and productivity ofZea mays. The root litter increased the growth of maize shoots more than the growth of roots. This appears to be a general phenomenon when plant nutrients are insufficient, as in the present study.  相似文献

The influence of four pruning frequencies on biomass, nodulation and N2 fixation was investigated on Albizia lebbeck, Gliricidia sepium and Leucaena leucocephala grown in the screenhouse for 16 months, using acetylene reduction and 15N dilution methods. Frequent prunings at 4-month intervals had no deleterious effect on symbiotic N2 fixation, which increased in Gliricidia and Leucaena in particular. Nodulation and nitrogenase activity varied inconsistently within species, and were not influenced by pruning frequency. Cumulative assessment of pruning effect showed higher biomass, N yield and N2-fixing capacity of the woody species than at last harvest, and appeared to have more practical relevance. Across species, cumulative total dry matter, N yields, and both percentage and absolute amount of N2 derived from atmosphere increased with pruning frequency, except when trees were pruned 3 times. Summary The evolution of mineral and hydrosoluble organic N released from two soils differing in pH and treated with leaves of Leucaena leucocephala (0, 8.3, 16.7, and 33. g kg-1 soil), Dactyladenia barteri (syn. Acioa barteri; 0 and 16.7 g), and their mixtures was studied in the laboratory using the aerobic incubation-leaching method. N mineralization in untreated soils and in soils supplemented with 8.3 g leucaena leaves was 41–53% higher in the soil from Onne (pH 4.7) than in the soil from Ibadan (pH 6.2), but the organic N content was similar with these treatments in the leachates of the soils from both locations. The application of 16.7 or 33.3 g of either or both type of leaves reduced the rate of mineral N production during the first 4 weeks, particularly in soils treated with dactyladenia leaves (C:N=36). After this lag period, N mineralization proceeded at a faster rate in the soil from Ibadan treated with 16.7 or 33.3 g of leucaena leaves (C:N=12), even in the presence of dactyladenia leaves. In Ibadan soil, after 12 weeks, mineral N apprently derived from leaves of both dactyladenia and leucaena averaged 6.3% of the N applied, and organic N from leaves averaged 9.5%. The addition of dactyladenia and leucaena leaves did not increases the mineral N content in the acid soil from Onne but leaching of soluble organic N with addition of 16.7 or 33.3 g of leaves contributed an N-mineralizable pool of 5.9% of the N applied.  相似文献

Two experiments were designed to investigate the effect of legume tree-pods and ensiling on the intake and relative palatability of six feeds by goats and sheep. In the first experiment, the feeds offered were pasture hay (Themeda triandra), alfalfa (Medicago sativa), pods of Acacia sieberiana, Acacia nilotica and Leucaena leucocephala. In the second, silage from the pods of A. sieberiana was included as the sixth feed in order to examine the effect of ensiling on intake and palatability since this process was devised as a means of detoxifying cyanogenic glocosides known to be present in the leaves and pods of this species. Intake (Ti) and relative palatability (Pi) were determined using 3 goats and 3 sheep in each experiment. Since the feeds had different dry matter contents, intake was expressed as a ratio of the quantity offered (Ti/Ai). Using the hay offered (A1) and intake (T1), as standard, relative palatability indices were calculated as Pi = (Ti/Ai)/(T1/A1) where i represented the other feeds. In experiment 1, goats consumed more hay than alfalfa or pods. Sheep consumed more leucaena than all the other feeds. In experiment 2, the intake of all feeds except nilotica increased over time. Hay and leucaena had the highest Pi for goats and sheep, respectively, in experiment 1. In experiment 2, silage from pods of A. sieberiana had the highest Pi while the ranking for goats remained unchanged. The nilotica meal had the lowest Pi in both experiments. Pi was affected (p > 0.0001) only by feed type in experiment 1 but in experiment 2, feed type, animal species and weight significantly (p > 0.01) affected Pi. The results show that the pods of L. leucocephala and A. nilotica were the most and least preferred by goats and sheep, respectively, and that ensiling significantly improved the intake and palatability of the pods of A. sieberiana. However, some feeds that are least preferred in times of abundance and variety could be relished during periods of scarcity and severe feed shortages, based on animal survival instinct.This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
