Adoption of rubber-integrated farm-livelihood systems: contrasting empirical evidence from the Indian context 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This paper examines the influence of important socio-economic, institutional/policy level factors in determining the adoption/non-adoption
of rubber-integrated farming systems in traditional and non-traditional rubber-growing regions in India. The empirical analysis
is based on a survey of rubber growers in the traditional rubber regions of Kerala (south India) and the non-traditional rubber
regions of Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura (north east India). In sharp contrast to Kerala, where smallholder responses toward
adoption of rubber-integrated farming systems have been lukewarm, the emerging rubber economies (most of which are tribal
communities) of north east (NE) India have shown interest in adopting rubber as an integrated farming system along with pre-existing
land-use livelihood activities. The study clearly demonstrates contrasting empirical evidence of adoption of rubber-integrated
farm-livelihood systems in the rubber-growing regions in Kerala and the NE states in India. The contrasting scenarios of adoption
of rubber-integrated farming systems are mostly explained by region-specific factors dominated by socio-economic, institutional
variables, and policy-level constraints, as also revealed by multivariate analysis. By and large, the findings of the study
have significant bearing on the socio-economic outcomes and the existing institutional development paradigm underlying the
rubber-development programmes introduced in India since independence. The study shows that the existing institutional arrangements
and policies, which evolved historically to facilitate rubber area expansion in the traditional regions (including Kerala),
have been highly instrumental in perpetuating rubber farming as a monoculture system. However, such an institutional mechanism
proves to be highly redundant in the context of the NE states which are otherwise diverse in terms of integrated farm-livelihood

The purpose of this article is to investigate effective reformism: strategies that innovation networks deploy to create changes in their environment in order to establish a more conducive context for the realization and durable embedding of their innovation projects. Using a case study approach, effective reformism efforts are analyzed in a technological innovation trajectory related to the implementation of a new poultry husbandry system and an organizational innovation trajectory concerning new ways of co-operation among individual farms to establish economies of scale. The findings reinforce the idea, emerging from a complexity perspective on agricultural innovation systems, that interaction between innovation networks and their environment is only steerable to a limited extent. Nonetheless, innovation networks can enhance effective reformism by creating tangible visions that serve as vehicles to create understanding about the innovation and mobilize support for it, and by employing several kinds of boundary spanning individuals that are able to forge effective connections between innovation networks and their environment. Because innovation networks can only partially influence their institutional environment, and because unintended consequences of actions and random events influence the course of the innovation process, innovation network actors need to continuously re-interpret the contexts in which they move. This constant reflection by the innovating actors on their position vis-à-vis their environment needs to be supported by dedicated facilitators and monitoring and evaluation methods aimed at system learning. This implies that agricultural innovation policies should, instead of aiming to fully plan and control innovation, foster the emergence of such flexible support instruments that enable adaptive innovation management. 相似文献

Cognition is recognized as an essential component of the living strategies of organisms and the use of cognitive approaches
based on an organismic-centered-view is discussed as a strategy to aid the advancement of landscape ecology to a more independent
scientific discipline. The incorporation of the theory of information, the theory of meaning and the Umwelt, and the biosemiotic models into the landscape ecology framework is described as the necessary step to create a common paradigmatic
background and operational tools to develop basis for a cognitive landscape ecology. Three cognitive landscapes (neutrality-based
landscape, individual-based landscape and observer-based landscape) have been described as the result of distinctive mechanisms
to extract information from a cognitive matrix based on a growing literature of (bio)semiotic exchange. The eco-field hypothesis
is presented as a new possibility to describe landscape processes according to an organismic-centered-view. The eco-field
is defined as a spatial configuration carrier of a specific meaning perceived when a specific living function is activated.
A species-specific cognitive landscape is composed of all the spatial configurations involved for all the living functions
for a particular organism. Eco-field hypothesis offers a detailed vision of (habitat) environmental requirements and creates
a novel conceptual bridge between niche, habitat, Umwelt and the methodological approaches of spatial ecology. Finally the eco-field hypothesis promises a new testing ground for
experimental investigations in landscape ecology and in related disciplines including environmental psychology, cognitive

Microbiological processes in soil organic phosphorus transformations in conventional and biological cropping systems 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
We studied microbiological processes in organic P transformations in soils cultivated with conventional and biological farming systems during the 13th and 14th year of different cropping systems. The treatments included control, biodynamic, bioorganic, and conventional plots and a mineral fertilization treatment. Different P fractions were investigated using a sequential fractionation method. Labile organic P, extracted by 0.5 M NaHCO3, was not affected by the farming systems. However, residual organic P remaining in the soil at the end of the sequential fractionation procedure showed that the biodynamic treatment, in particular, led to a modification of the composition of organic P. Labile organic P, organic P extractable in 0.1 M NaOH, and total residual P all showed temporal fluctuations. As total residual P consists of more than 70% organic P, it can be assumed that residual organic P contributed to these variations. This result indicates that chemically resistant organic P participates in short-term accumulation and mineralization processes. All biological soil parameters tested in this study showed significant temporal fluctuations, mainly attributed to differences in climatic conditions between years, but possibly also related to the growth cycle of the crop. The higher values of the biological soil parameters in the biodynamic and bioorganic treatments were explained by the greater importance of manure and the different plant protection strategies. The level of phosphatase activity and mineralization of organic C indicated a higher turnover of organic substrates, and thus of organic P, in the biodynamic and bioorganic treatments. This paper presents a stochastic simulation model to evaluate the efficacy of regional or national surveys aimed at identifying infection in populations of animals. The process of evaluation involves specification or calculation of cluster-level test sensitivity and specificity, which are derived from two probability distributions of the number of individual-level positive tests expected from non-infected and infected clusters, respectively. Probability distributions for the number of positive clusters expected in a situation of freedom from infection and under various levels of cluster prevalence are specified and used to determine survey properties (the survey being considered a diagnostic system), and ROC curves are drawn. Likelihood ratios allow investigators to state the extent to which a survey result is more likely to be observed if the region or country is infected at a given prevalence than if it is free from infection. The result of a survey carried out to investigate the presence of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) in Switzerland is used to illustrate this approach. ABSTRACT A socio-economic survey of production systems was carried out in four out of the eight states that make up the southwest agricultural zone of Nigeria. A total of 157 minor grain legume farmers selected by multi-stage sampling were interviewed using structured questionnaires. The study shows that lima bean, pigeon pea, African yam bean, and bambara groundnut are the prominent minor grain legumes grown on less than 10% of the total cultivated land area. The minor grain legumes are grown on an average land size ranging from 0.2 to 0.4ha and predominantly in mixture with crops like cassava, maize, yam, sorghum, cocoyam, etc. The use of modern inputs like herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, and improved varieties is uncommon in minor legume production systems. The cultivation of these legumes is more popular among the older members of the farming communities, about 78% of which are above 40 years of age. The average yield of the legumes on farms is considerably low, estimated at 271kg/ha, 265kg/ha, 174kg/ha, and 275kg/ha for lima bean, pigeon pea, African yambean, and bambara groundnut, respectively. Major constraints identified by the farmers include low market demand, inadequate seed supply, high cost of labour, and low yield. Research work is therefore needed in agronomy and breeding for improved yield and utilization for expanded market and, consequently, increased production. 相似文献

Conservation agriculture practices are being advocated to help sustain crop productivity gains and secure environmental sustainability in the Trans-Gangetic Plains, India’s Green Revolution heartland. The paper illustrates the use of village surveys as a quasi-quantitative system analysis tool to derive implications for agricultural research and development. Drawing from village surveys in 170 communities, the paper assesses current crop residue management practices in Punjab and Haryana’s rice-wheat, basmati-wheat and non-rice-wheat cropping systems. The prevalence of wheat as the winter crop implies an intensive collection, trading and use of wheat straw as basal feed for dairy livestock; which contrasts with the diverse crop residue management of the monsoon crops. The increased use of combine harvesters has spurred the rapid advent of mechanical wheat straw reapers whereas the bulk of combine harvested rice straw is burned in situ. Present crop residue management practices are largely incompatible with year-round mulch retention despite significant biomass production. The research and development community faces the challenge of evening out straw use and management over seasons to ensure at least partial residue retention if its calls for conservation agriculture in this important sub-region are to succeed. Data from the meat inspection at a large regional abattoir in Norway was used to study the effect of different production systems and herd size on the occurrence of pathological lesions in pig carcasses. Three production systems were compared: combined production, production strictly in batches and continuous production. Only the former reared its own piglets. The data was collected in the period 1975–1977. The number of herds varied between 87 and 94, and between 26,000 and 30,000 bacon pigs were slaughtered each year. The herds were divided into three different size groups: ≤ 200, 201–400, and > 400 pigs slaughtered annually. Each year was considered separately.The study showed that the highest frequency of sound carcasses occurred in the combined production group. There was no significant difference between the two production groups rearing purchased piglets. Moreover, there was an inverse relationship between the frequency of sound carcasses and herd size, but the positive effect of the small herd was estimated to be less important than that of production system.The distribution of 16 different pathological lesions was also considered. Four lesions (pneumonia — moderate and severe —, pleurisy and scabies) were recorded at significantly different levels in the production systems all three years of recording.Analysis of the effect of herd size also showed that in the cases of moderate pneumonia and pleurisy, the small herds were at an advantage. The other lesions had a rather casual distribution among the groups.The statistical evaluation indicates however, that in cases of significant differences between the tested groups, only 20–40 % of the variation could be “explained” by our model comprizing production systems and herd size groups. 相似文献

We examined the utility of a site-based simulation model for corn (MAIZE) applied to the Upper Great Lakes Region (UGLR) of the United States for 1992–1996. To evaluate model outputs, we used a modeling applications system integrative framework (MASIF) to simulate corn yields in the UGLR. We divided the region into two ecological zones (upper UGLR-1 and lower UGLR-2) and compared MAIZE and USDA National Agriculture Statistics Service (NASS) yield estimates in each zone. There was greater agreement between MAIZE and NASS yields at lower yield values. As NASS yields increased, MAIZE yields also increased, but to a greater extent than did NASS yields. We conducted a mean spatial analysis of maize yield from 1992 to 1996. We also conducted a spatial analysis of 1994, 1995 and 1996. There are both spatial and temporal differences when yields are mapped. 相似文献
