An application of Neurogenetic Algorithm System to individual tree growth model

A neural network system with genetic algorithms (Neurogenetic Algorithm System, or NGAS) was employed to develop individual coniferous tree growth models. A multivariable regression model was applied to compare the performance of NGAS. An IBM personal computer with the BioComp System’s software program of NGO was used to execute this comparison. The results indicate that NGAS is more accurate and effective than the conventional regression method in modeling individual tree growth based on the criteria of Sum of Squared Error (SSE), Average Absolute Error (AAE), Mean Squared Error (MSE) and Final Predicted Error (FPE). This study also suggests that individual tree growth may indeed be a non-linear process. Using this flexible neural network system to model individual tree growth can yield satisfactory prediction results.

在工作站（ＳｕｎＳＰＡＲＣｓｔａｔｉｏｎⅡ）与微机的联网平台上,用地理信息系统软件ＡＲＣ／ＩＮＦＯ对西湖流域的非点源污染研究做了有益的探索,初步建立了西湖流域非点源污染信息数据库．讨论了专题数据的分类编码,空间数据的数字化、编辑、坐标转换等,并生成了西湖流域的数字地面模型（ＤＥＭ）,也为西湖流域非点源污染的深入研究提供了基础数据平台．     

Assessment of the performance of border and furrow irrigation systems and the relationship between performance indicators and system variables

Performance terms measure how close an irrigation event is to an ideal one. For border and furrow irrigation to facilitate quantification of the performance terms use was made of the software tools and . Once determined, the values of the performance indices were plotted as a function of the system variables. In conclusion, it can be stated that the relationship between the performance indices and the system variable contains valuable information for the system design and management.

The greening of the “barrios”: Urban agriculture for food security in Cuba

Urban agriculture in Cuba has rapidly become a significant source of fresh produce for the urban and suburban populations. A large number of urban gardens in Havana and other major cities have emerged as a grassroots movement in response to the crisis brought about by the loss of trade, with the collapse of the socialist bloc in 1989. These gardens are helping to stabilize the supply of fresh produce to Cuba's urban centers. During 1996, Havana's urban farms provided the city's urban population with 8,500 tons of agricultural produce, 4 million dozens of flowers, 7.5 million eggs, and 3,650 tons of meat. This system of urban agriculture, composed of about 8,000 gardens nationwide has been developed and managed along agroecological principles, which eliminate the use of synthetic chemical pesticides and fertilizers, emphasizing diversification, recycling, and the use of local resources. This article explores the systems utilized by Cuba's urban farmers, and the impact that this movement has had on Cuban food security.
