The participation of active defense responses in the limitation of fungal spread in the sapwood of living sugi tree was determined.
Isolates ofGuignardia cryptomeriae were inoculated to living trees, fresh logs, frozen and thawed logs and autoclaved logs, and the spread of wood discoloration
and fungal hyphae was assessed. In autoclaved logs and freeze-treated logs, wood discoloration and reaction zone formation
were not observed, and fungal hyphae of both of virulent and avirulent isolates grew rapidly in the wood. In fresh logs, wood
discoloration and the formation of a pale reaction zone and transition zone were observed. Virulent isolates spread rapidly,
but the spread of avirulent isolates was inhibited. In living trees, wood discoloration was observed and reaction zones were
formed at lesion margins. These results indicated that constitutive defense mechanisms had no effect on the spread of both
of virulent and avirulent isolates, and that active defense responses were important in the limitation of spread of fungal
hyphae, hence in the limitation of wood discoloration. Further, it appeared that avirulent, but not virulent, races ofG. cryptomeriae were easily inhibited even by weak host responses.

In 1985, the government of Indonesia declared an export ban on logs in order to promote the wood processing industry within
the country. Furthermore, this policy was followed by a regulation that the concessionaires have to build their own industry,
causing a great increase in wood industry. In the early period after the log export ban, the government found it to be successful
and there were no significant problems. Unfortunately, after one decade, Indonesia’s forestry sector faced some serious problems,i.e. problems in raw material supply which was lower than the log demand level in the industry, deforestation issues, and ecological

One of the roles of growth stress in branch shape formation was investigated using a weeping-type Japanese cherry,Prunus spachiana. Negative released strains, caused by longitudinal tensile growth stresses, were detected in the upper side of gibberellin A3-treated (GA3-treated) and control branches. The mean value of the released strain in the upper side of the treated branches was –0.104%, which was larger than the value (–0.067%) observed in the control branches. Both branches formed tension wood in the upper side of the xylem, and the treated branches formed tension wood near the pith as well. This suggested that the treated branches generated larger tensile growth stress from the early growth stages. The successive generation of growth stress from the early growth stages was considered to generate forces large enough to bend the branch upward. 相似文献
