A 7-year-old, male neutered Rhodesian Ridgeback dog was referred to the University of California-Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with a 4-month history of peritonitis and episodic abdominal discomfort, lethargy, and weakness. Marked abdominal distension with a prominent fluid wave was noted on physical examination. Cytologic analysis of the abdominal fluid indicated a septic exudate with mixed bacteria and many protozoal zoites. Differentials for the identity of the protozoal zoites included Toxoplasma gondii, Sarcocystis neurona, and Neospora caninum. Indirect latex agglutination antigen testing, standard indirect fluorescent antibody testing, and PCR analysis were performed to identify the zoites. The dog's serum antibody titer for N caninum tachyzoites was 1:20,480, known polysera to N caninum reacted against zoites in the abdominal fluid, and PCR analysis of the abdominal fluid was positive for the presence of a known gene of N caninum. Based on the morphologic, immunologic, and molecular findings, the zoites were identified as N caninum. It remains unclear how the tachyzoites gained access to the peritoneal cavity. To the authors' knowledge, there are no reports of free N caninum in abdominal fluid of any species.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of two commonly used anticoagulants (K3EDTA and lithium heparin) on refractometric and spectrophotometric measurement of total protein (TP) concentration in equine peritoneal fluid samples. The influence of a commercial solution of K3EDTA, a solution of K3EDTA in distilled water and lithium heparin on the refractometric and spectrophotometric (biuret) quantification of TP content in peritoneal fluid samples was assessed. Total protein concentration measured by refractometry was consistently overestimated in samples with commercial K3EDTA. The solution of K3EDTA in distilled water only caused TP overestimation at high K3EDTA concentrations (>5 micromol/ml). By contrast, lithium heparin did not influence the refractometric values of TP. Neither anticoagulant modified TP values when measured by the biuret method. In conclusion, the use of K3EDTA as anticoagulant may result in a significant overestimation of TP values of peritoneal fluid samples measured by refractometry.  相似文献

Plants require water, but a deficit or excess of water can negatively impact their growth and functioning. Soil flooding, in which root-zone is filled with excess water, restricts oxygen diffusion into the soil. Global climate change is increasing the risk of crop yield loss caused by flooding, and the development of flooding tolerant crops is urgently needed. Root anatomical traits are essential for plants to adapt to drought and flooding, as they determine the balance between the rates of water and oxygen transport. The stele contains xylem and the cortex contains aerenchyma (gas spaces), which respectively contribute to water uptake from the soil and oxygen supply to the roots; this implies that there is a trade-off between the ratio of cortex and stele sizes with respect to adaptation to drought or flooding. In this review, we analyze recent advances in the understanding of root anatomical traits that confer drought and/or flooding tolerance to plants and illustrate the trade-off between cortex and stele sizes. Moreover, we introduce the progress that has been made in modelling and fully automated analyses of root anatomical traits and discuss how key root anatomical traits can be used to improve crop tolerance to soil flooding.  相似文献

Computational fluid dynamics is used to simulate the hydraulic efficiency of the ozone contactor in A water plant in Beijing and to optimize the contactor by calculating the retention time distribution (RTD) of the fluid. The result shows that the value of T10 /HRT of the existing contactor is 0.466, and the phenomenon of obvious short circuiting and backflow which result in low hydraulic efficiency exists in the contactor. After optimization, the value of T10 /HRT of the contactor in the presence of guide plates is 0.561, making the hydraulic efficiency increased by 20.38%. However, the value of T90 /HRT is 1.316, which means that the phenomenon of backflow existed. The value of T10 /HRT of the contactor in the presence of horizontal baffles is 0.540, making the hydraulic efficiency increased by 15.88%, and the value of T90 /HRT reduces to 0.821. That means the concentration ratio of RTD increased, and the hydraulic efficiency of whole flow field is improved significantly in the presence of horizontal baffles.  相似文献

Awara (Astrocaryum vulgare M.) is a palm fruit mainly used in nutrition. We analysed the pulp oil for fatty acid, tocopherol, carotenoid, and phytosterol and we evaluated whether this oil may attenuate inflammation in vivo. In an endotoxic shock model, awara pulp oil treatment decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines and increased anti-inflammatory cytokines. In a pulmonary inflammation model, awara pulp oil treatment reduced eosinophil and lymphocyte numbers recovered into the broncho-alveolar lavages. These results suggest that awara pulp oil administration can efficiently counteract an acute and chronic inflammatory response in vivo that is probably mediated by fatty acids and minor compounds.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo determine the impact of acepromazine on the cardiovascular responses to three treatments for hypotension in dogs during deep isoflurane anesthesia.Study designProspective blinded randomized cross-over experimental design.AnimalsSix adult (2.5 ± 0.5 year old) healthy mixed breed dogs (24.2 ± 7.6 kg).MethodsAnesthesia was induced with propofol (4–6 mg kg?1, IV) and maintained with isoflurane. Each dog received six treatments separated by at least 5 days. Once instrumented, dogs randomly received acepromazine (0.05 mg kg?1) (Ace) or saline (equal volume) (Sal) IV and end-tidal isoflurane (e′Iso) was adjusted to achieve hypotension, defined as a mean blood pressure between 45 and 50 mmHg. Dogs randomly received dextran (D) (7 mL kg?1) or lactated Ringer's (LR) (20 mL kg?1) over 14 minutes, or ephedrine (Eph) (0.1 mg kg?1 followed by 10 μg kg?1 minute?1) throughout the study. Measurements were taken at baseline, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40 minutes. Data were analyzed with a Latin Square in two factors (Ace/Sal and treatment) for repeated measures, with further comparisons if appropriate (p < 0.05).Resultse′Iso producing hypotension was significantly less following Ace (2.07 ± 0.23%) than Sal (2.43 ± 0.23%). No improvement in cardiac output (CO) was observed with D or LR. LR initially intensified hypotension with a significant reduction in SVR, while D caused a minor improvement in ABP. Eph produced a significant increase in ABP, CO, hemoglobin, oxygen content and delivery. Pre-treatment with Ace minimized ABP improvements with all treatments.Conclusions and clinical relevanceAcepromazine (0.05 mg kg?1 IV) enhanced the hypotensive effect of isoflurane, although it maintained CO. Administration of LR significantly worsens ABP initially by further vasodilation. D caused minimal improvement in ABP. At the infusion studied, Eph effectively countered the cardiovascular depression produced by deep isoflurane anesthesia, but extremes in ABP associated with initial vasoconstriction prevent our recommendation at this dose.  相似文献
