Repeated sequences of digitised and geo-referenced historical aerial photography provide a powerful means of understanding
landscape change. We use this method to demonstrate a landscape wide expansion of closed forest (42% increase in total coverage)
in the Australian monsoon tropics over the past five decades. Retrospective habitat suitability models (HSI) of closed forest
derived using four landscape measures (drainage distance, slope angle, aspect and elevation) for imagery taken in 1947 correctly
forecast the subsequent spatial distribution of the expansion, with topographic fire protection primarily determining the
closed-forest distribution. The dynamics of the closed forest-savanna boundary were predicted accurately by generalised linear
models, with closed-forest expansion in fire-protected sites along forest edges and regression in the more fire-prone areas.
Two factors may plausibly explain the expansion of closed forests. First, eco-ethnographic records stress the skilful use
of fire by Aboriginal people in protecting isolated and locally resource-rich closed-forest patches. Second, the recent global
increase in atmospheric CO2 may be changing the competitive balance between savanna and forest by enabling C3 trees to grow fast enough to escape the fire trap presented by flammable C4 grasses. 相似文献

The efficiency of a sample-based inventory can be greatly improved if lower cost information on the study area is utilized. It has been observed that the use of airborne laser scanning (ALS) data in the design phase may improve the efficiency of dead wood (coarse woody debris, CWD) volume inventory notably, i.e. a smaller standard error of the mean is observed with the same inventory costs. In the present case, several auxiliary data sources were employed in the design phase by using ‘probability proportional to size’ sampling to select the sample units to be inventoried in the field. It was observed that a combination of ALS data with either aerial photographs or stand-register data can improve the sampling efficiency even more than the use of ALS as a single data source. Since these additional data sources are often gathered for the inventory of living trees, their use does not incur extra expenses for CWD assessment. Thus, the use of these data separately or together with ALS data can greatly improve the cost-efficiency of a CWD volume inventory. It was also observed that the size of the sample units has a slight effect on the sampling efficiency. Even though the improvement in the sampling efficiency was usually greater with larger sample unit sizes, the CWD volume inventory was most efficient with moderate grid cell sizes. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to develop a method for classifying tree species from remote sensing images by combining a semi-automatic pattern recognition technique and spectral properties of trees. Five stands in southern Finland were studied. Individual trees in the digital colour infrared (CIR) aerial photographs were segmented by a method based on the recognition of tree crown patterns at subpixel accuracy. The images were filtered with the Gaussian N-by-N smoothing operator and local maxima above a threshold level were segmented. The segments were classified into three tree species classes. The kappa coefficients for stands varied from 0.43 to 0.86 when the training data and test data were from the same aerial photograph. When training data from other photographs were used as reference data, the kappa coefficients ranged from 0.40 to 0.75. The method described provides an interesting approach for detecting tree species semi-automatically in digital aerial data. 相似文献

Aerial photographs taken in 1976 and 1989 and a field survey in 1999 showed that land use in a 900-ha catchment in the southern part of the Ecuadorian Andes is highly dynamic. Over 23 years, ca. 83 ha of arable land was abandoned and ca. 70 ha was taken into agricultural production. Changes in land use were not spatially homogeneous. Parcels on unstable geologic formations and close to village centres were preferably set-aside. Land taken into cultivation was preferably located on gently sloping areas close to newly built sites and arterial roads. The area with bush vegetation increased by regeneration of natural vegetation on fields set-aside in the late 1970s and early 1980s. There was a complex interaction between water erosion and environmental change in the study area. Land taken into production was levelled for furrow irrigation: this led to a net reduction in the area susceptible to water erosion. However, one quarter of the area affected only by sheet and rill erosion 23 years ago has since become incised by deep gullies. This increase in gully density was related to inadequate construction and management of irrigation infrastructure, rather than to change in vegetation cover and/or soil erodibility caused by agricultural practices. This factor is often overlooked in studies of the effects of environmental change on geomorphologic processes. 相似文献

基于变介电常数电容器原理设计雾滴沉积传感器及检测系统,由此实现对航空施药中雾滴地面沉积量的快速获取。通过实验,分析建立了传感器对电导率487μS/cm、25 mS/cm雾滴的沉积量测量线性回归方程,决定系数R2分别为0.9923和0.9544。利用M-18B型飞机和AU-5000型喷雾机,对系统进行了应用测试,结果表明:与水敏纸图像分析方法对比,2种方法获得的雾滴地面沉积量分布曲线拟合度可达0.914 6,样点单位面积沉积量的相对测量误差分布在10%~50%之间。 相似文献

Ficus species are multipurpose trees well known by rural populations in Sahelian and Sudanian zones of Africa. Their uses are well documented but their amenability for vegetative propagation has not been extensively studied. This paper compares the rooting ability of stem and aerial root cuttings from thirteen Ficus species found in West Africa. It highlights the differences between species belonging to the sub-genera Sycomorus and Urostigma. The former show no capacity to propagate from cuttings whereas the latter, with epiphytic development, can be propagated by cuttings, although this capacity varies among species. Thus, F. thonningii, F. leprieurii and F. ovata are easily propagated, while F. platyphylla and F. elasticoides are propagated with difficulty. The rooting capacity also varies depending on the cutting material used. It decreases in the following order: long leafless hardwood cuttings (pole) > nodal cuttings > apical cuttings. Rooting potential increases when the cuttings are harvested towards the end of the dry season(March to May). Aerial root can be used for cuttings in all species of the sub-genus Urostigma. The capacity of root cuttings to regenerate is greatest when cuttings are collected at the beginning of the dry season (November). In this case, wound-induced adventitious roots arise at the basal end of the cutting while de novo buds are developed from the cambium at the distal end. The subsequent morphological development is identical to that of a stem cutting. These results clarify and allow the optimal use of the knowledge and methods developed by the indigenous people of the Sahel and could assist and promote fig tree (Ficus sp.) domestication in the dry tropics.This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date. 相似文献
