Irrigated rice (Oryza sativa L.) in West Africa covers about 12 % of the regional rice‐growing area, and is produced all along the agro‐ecological gradient from the forest zone to the Sahara desert margins. Spatial and temporal variability of yield gaps (i.e., difference between actual and potential yield) were determined to set priorities for research and target technologies. On‐farm trials were conducted on 191 irrigated lowland fields in the humid forest, the savanna and the Sahel. Farmers' yields were compared with those of super‐imposed treatments of improved fertilization and weed management. Farmers' yields varied between 0.2 and 8.7 Mg ha‐1, with average yields of 3.4 Mg ha‐1 (Guinea savanna), 3.6 Mg ha‐1 (humid forest), 3.9 Mg ha‐1 (Sahel), and 5.1 Mg ha‐1 (Sudan savanna). Simulated potential yields increased from 7 Mg ha‐1 in the forest to about 10 Mg ha‐1 in the Sahel. Accordingly, yield gaps were large, ranging from 3.2 to 5.9 Mg ha‐1. Researcher weed control in the Sahel gave grain yield increases of about 1.0 Mg ha‐1. Improved weed and N fertilization management increased yields by 1 to 2 Mg ha‐1 in the forest and Guinea savanna sites. A share of 57‐80 % of the yield gap could not be accounted for. Improving weed control is likely to have the highest pay‐off in the Sahel while improved management of fertilizer N will be most beneficial in the forest and savanna environments.  相似文献

The water use of rice schemes was derived from field measurements made during the 1991 and 1992 season at 13 irrigation schemes situated in the delta and valley of the Senegal river. The seasonal water consumption, as well as the water distribution throughout the season and the operation of the pumping stations were evaluated. The water consumption was compared with standards which ranged from 16,650 to 21,100 m3 ha–1 depending on the season and the location of the scheme. Half of the analyzed schemes used more water than required. Analysis of the water distribution throughout the season revealed that in general the supply follows the demand. In small-scale schemes however, the fit between supply and demand is often lacking, resulting in crop stress and yield reduction. Furthermore, the study shows that the capacity of half of the pumping stations are under-used as a result of a long stretched saturation period and/or the irrigation of only a small fraction of the total area of the scheme.  相似文献

Two groups of Senegal sole (Solea senegalensis) larvae were cultured. One used rotifers for the first 10 days after hatching (dph) and enriched Artemia metanauplii from 6 to 30 dph and the other without rotifers, using enriched Artemia metanauplii as the sole food source. The quantity of metanauplii used was the same (group A), twice (group A2) and three times (group A3) the quantity of live prey (in dry weight) of the group fed with rotifers (group R). At the end of the experiment, the growth, in terms of total length and individual dry weight was significantly higher for the larvae on group A2 whilst rotifer fed larvae (R) showed the poorest results. Eye migration was also delayed by approximately 2 days in the group R. No significant differences were found in survival rates. The influence of diet on Senegal sole metamorphosis and its relationship with the size rather than the age of the fish are discussed.  相似文献

In Dakar kennels where morbidity and mortality attributed to diseases transmitted by ticks were high, we conducted a field study to assess the prevalence of Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma platys and Babesia spp. infections in two kennels (n = 34 dogs) and to study the impact of tick protection. The first day of the study, the E. canis PCR were positive in 18 dogs (53%). A. platys was found in one dog and all dogs were negative for Babesia spp. After one month of doxycycline treatment, the number of PCR positive dogs decreased significantly to 2 (5.9%). During seven months, all dogs were treated monthly topically with a novel combination (Certifect®, Merial) delivering at least 6.7 mg fipronil/kg body weight, 8.0 mg amitraz/kg and 6 mg (S)-methoprene/kg. The number of PCR positive dogs remained stable all over the seven months, with 4 dogs being positive at Day 90 and 2 at Day 210. The combination of treatment and monthly prevention had a significant effect in the two kennels. All dogs remained healthy, which was not the case in previous years.  相似文献

This study aimed to determine the relationships between N'Dama cows body condition score (BCS) and (i) calf growth and the milk collected; and (ii) the probabilities of pregnancy and juvenile mortality. Animals from 10 herds ranging from 20 to 210 animals in herd size were followed monthly in an extensive range management system in Southern Senegal between 1993 and 1998. For daily weight gains and milk collected, linear mixed-effects models were fitted between calving and 6 months postpartum. Cow lactation was included as random effect, with an unstructured variance-covariance matrix. Calving season, parity, herd size, and calving BCS were the fixed effects. For the probabilities of pregnancy and juvenile mortality, survival models for grouped data were fitted on a monthly scale. The model selection was based on the Akaike information criteria. In large herds, calving BCS had little effect on milk production. In small herds, calves born to cows scoring ≥2.5 points at calving grew quicker and their dam were more milked. The relative difference in milk production between thin and fat cows averaged 23%. The relative gain was higher in the cool dry season than in the other seasons, and for primiparous than for multiparous cows. Except during the hot dry season, the probability of pregnancy was twice as high for cows scoring ≥2.5 points the two previous months than for other cows. The BCS had no effect on calf survival until 1 year of age in large herds. In small herds, calves born to thin cows at calving showed a survival at 1 year more than five points lower than calves born to fatter cows. The threshold of 2.5 points on a five-point scale is pertinent to describe the production performance of N'Dama cows in such a breeding context.  相似文献

Linear-multilevel models (LMM) are mixed-effects models in which several levels of grouping may be specified (village, herd, animal, …). This study highlighted the usefulness of graphical methods in their analysis through: (1) the choice of the fixed and random effects and their structure, (2) the assessment of goodness-of-fit and (3) distributional assumptions for random effects and residuals.

An LMM was developed to study the effect of ewe deworming with morantel on lamb pre-weaning growth in a field experiment involving 182 lambs in 45 herds and 10 villages in Kolda, Senegal. Growth was described as a quadratic polynomial of age. Other covariates were sex, litter-size and treatment. The choice of fixed and random effects relied on three graphs: (1) a trellis display of mean live-weight vs. age, to select main effects and interactions (fixed effects); (2) a trellis display of individual growth curves, to decide which growth-curve terms should be included as random effects and (3) a scatter plot of parameters of lamb-specific regressions (live-weight vs. quadratic polynomial of age) to choose the random-effects covariance structure.

Age, litter-size, age×litter-size, litter-size×treatment and age×litter-size×treatment were selected graphically as fixed effects and were significant (p<0.05) in subsequent statistical models. The selection of random-effect structures was guided by graphical assessment and comparison of the Akaike’s information criterion for different models. The final random-effects selected included no random effect at the village level but intercept, age and squared-age at the herd and lamb levels. The structure of the random-effects variance–covariance matrices were blocked-diagonal at the herd level and unstructured at the lamb level. An order-1 autoregressive structure was retained to account for serial correlations of residuals. Smaller residual variance at 90 days than at younger ages was modeled with a dummy variable taking a value of 1 at 90 days and 0 elsewhere.

Ewe-deworming with morantel during the rainy season lead to higher lamb live-weights (probably related to a better ewe-nutrition and -health status). A positive correlation was demonstrated between early weight and growth rate at the population level (with important lamb and herd-level random deviations). The persistence of this correlation at older ages should be checked to determine whether early weights are good predictors of mature weights and ewe-reproductive lifetime performance.  相似文献

The jujube tree (Ziziphus mauritiana Lam., Rhamnaceae family) is an exotic species which is commonly found in the Sahelian and Sudanian areas of Africa. A programme was undertaken in Senegal to introduce domesticated varieties and adapt them to the edaphic and climatic specificities of the Sahel. Research focussed on the ‘Gola’ variety, multiplied by an in vitro micrografting technique which is a miniaturisation of the apex splice, involving the aseptic grafting of miniature scions (5 to 10 mm long) onto the hypocotyl of seedlings in vitro. Studies reported here include the choice and preparation of rootstock, the micrografting technique, acclimation of the grafts, and transplantation to the field. The outcome of this research is the achievement of successful establishment of over 80% of the micrografts. However, more work is required to evaluate the transferability of the techniques through a study of their economic viability, as well as their acceptability to local people. The objective of our study was to test the comparative efficiency of neem (Azadirachta indica) kernel oil, groundnut oil and a synthetic insecticide, K-Othrine®, in protecting stocks of leguminous tree seeds against seed beetles under Sahelian conditions. The following insect/seed combinations were used as models: Caryedon acaciae/Acacia nilotica, C. longispinosus/A. raddiana and C. serratus/Tamarindus indica. Neem oil, when used at concentrations of 5 to 20 ml per kg of seeds, had pronounced adulticidal and ovicidal effects which were maintained for five months. No significant fall in seed viability was observed except in the case of C. acaciae/A. nilotica. Groundnut oil, when used at concentrations of 5 to 20 ml per kg of seeds, had pronounced adulticidal and ovicidal effects which were relatively short-lived. A significant fall in seed viability was observed over five months. K-Othrine®, when used at concentrations ranging from 25 to 100 mg per kg, had high adulticidal effects which were maintained for five months. However, K-Othrine® was found to have no ovicide properties. No significant fall in seed viability was observed. This study concluded that it is possible to use neem oil, a product that can be obtained locally at low cost, to efficiently protect tree seed stocks in the Sahel.This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Seventeen confirmed and four probable sightings of humpback whales, Megaptera novaeangliae, were documented from platform-of-opportunity Research Vessel (R/V) Dr. Fridtjof Nansen in a passing-mode visual survey of continental shelf waters between Conakry and Cap Vert Peninsula (Dakar), 21 October -5 November 2011. None were encountered in the northern stratum Dakar-Agadir, 6 November -15 December 2011. Total visual survey effort was 468 h, 01 min, covering 5335 km. Depending on the exclusion or inclusion of probable records, the sum of group sizes totalled 33 or 43 individuals, respectively. Humpback whale encounter rates between Conakry and Dakar then amounted to 1.74 or 2.27 whales/ 100 km, respectively. Group sizes ranged from 1-6 individuals (mean = 1.94, S.D. = 1.20, n =17; median = 2). Minimally five of 17 groups (29.4%) consisted of adult-calf pairs, with a minimum crude birth rate ranging from 0.060-0.152. All sightings occurred in shallow water, 22-60 m (mean = 35.0 m, S.D. = 10.13, n = 17) but survey effort in deeper, off-shore water was negligible. Sea-surface temperature at sighting locations ranged from 25.5-29.0°C (mean = 27.34, S.D. = 0.96, n = 17). No humpback whales were sighted during a second survey covering Conakry-Tangier-Las Palmas, from 9 May to 22 July 2012 (519 h, 13 min; 6278 km). The Cape Verde Islands comprised, to date, the only known wintering ground located in the North-East Atlantic. This study showed that Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Guinea are normal range states for M. novaeangliae. A temporal signature, six to seven months out-of-phase with mid-season in the Cape Verde Islands, and neonate presence strongly suggest that the wide Conakry-Dakar continental shelf serves as both wintering and nursery grounds for a South Atlantic stock, in agreement with Bamy et al. (2010). This stock may comprise the northwesternmost component of the large humpback whale assemblage migrating in and out of the northern Gulf of Guinea in austral winter/spring. Further research is required to consolidate insights linking temporal and spatial distribution off western Africa with hemispheric stock identity and migration paths.  相似文献

Total lipids, lipid classes and their associated fatty acids were quantified in developing eggs, yolk-sac larvae and starving larvae (from day 1 to day 5 after hatching) of the Senegal sole,Solea senegalensis Kaup. Larvae during early development and starvation consumed about 0.6% of its dry weight per day, mainly due to lipid catabolism. There was a net consumption of approximately 1.7% total lipid per day, and a net energy utilization of 1.3 kcal g–1 dry weight biomass day–1, mostly derived from lipid depletion. The overall decrease of total neutral lipids (mainly triacylglycerols and sterol esters) was 3.4 faster than that of total polar lipids (primarily phosphatidylcholine), with rates of 29.2 and 8.7 g mg–1 dry weight biomass day–1, respectively. There was a concomitant increase in PE, PS and phosphatidic acid during the period under study. Total saturated and total monounsaturated fatty acids were catabolized (primarily 160 and 161 (n-7)) as energy substrates at rates of 7.4 and 10.9 g mg–1 total lipid day–1, whereas total PUFAs were conserved. DHA was specifically retained in PE, whereas EPA and DHA were catabolized in PC and triacylglycerol. Total DMA and AA contents in total lipid increased during early development and starvation.
