Interactions between bivalve shellfish farms and fishery resources   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The only possible way to increase seafood yields from many coastal and continental shelf regions of the world is through aquaculture. The most ecologically efficient forms of aquaculture are those operations culturing plants and lower trophic level animals, such as bivalve molluscs. It is therefore understandable why culturing of these organisms has steadily increased over at least the last two decades. However, the expansion of large-scale aquaculture has costs in terms of loss of water space that could be used for other activities, and carbon flows directed through the bivalves that could have been used to support other marine plants and animals (predation and production foregone). The dominant present users of many, if not most, coastal and continental shelf regions are commercial and, in some cases, recreational and indigenous customary fishers. Therefore, in many cases, it is these stakeholders who will stand to pay much of the direct costs of the expansion of aquaculture. Therefore, it is inevitable that in some cases, there will be conflict between these sectors as water space becomes more in demand and, hence, more valuable. Resource managers are therefore faced with making resource allocation decisions between alternate sectors, and these decisions should be based on robust knowledge of the costs and benefits of each alternative use. In the case of allocation decisions between bivalve aquaculture and wild stock fisheries, there is presently a paucity of knowledge surrounding the interactions between these two activities. The aim of the work presented here was to develop a framework for understanding these interactions and applying the framework in a case study in New Zealand.  相似文献

Diatoms are known to produce a variety of halogenated compounds, which were recently shown to have a role in allelopathic interactions between competing species. The production of these compounds is linked to haloperoxidase activity. This research, has shown that this system may also be involved in diatom-bacteria interactions via the H2O2 dependent inactivation of a type of quorum sensing (QS) molecule, i.e., N-β-ketoacylated homoserine lactones (AHLs), by a natural haloperoxidase system from the benthic diatom Nitzschia cf pellucida. The AHL degradation pathway towards corresponding halogenated derivatives was elucidated via HPLC-MS analysis and the synthesis of a broad series of novel halogenated AHL analogues as reference compounds. Furthermore, their biological activity as quorum sensing modulators was directly compared and evaluated against a series of naturally occurring β-keto-AHLs. It has been demonstrated that the loss of the QS activity results from the final cleavage of the halogenated N-acyl chain of the signal molecules.  相似文献

Use of decision support systems (DSS) has thus far been framed as a social process of adoption or technical process of usability. We analyze the development of a DSS as a process of institutionalization of new as well as drift of existing practices. We write an Actor-Network-Theory (ANT) account, i.e. an interpretive study, that follows the traces left by both human and non-human actors (e.g. technology, methodologies, etc.) to understand how a DSS development project institutionalizes DSS technology in several forest management organizations in the German state of Rheinland Pfalz. The research has an innovative value since it uses ANT in the design of a DSS, hence affecting it, while commonly ANT has been used to understand why networks work or do not. Moreover, we use a new technology (PREZITM, www.prezi.com) for the visualization of the whole actor network coherent to the ANT methodology, i.e. “keeping the social flat.” As a result, the development of the ANT account proposed in the present paper, even if still partial, supports the design of new technologies being introduced in current practice and generates an important learning effect thanks to the underpinning interpretative approach.  相似文献

  1. Invasive species threaten the conservation of marine environments, and urgent management strategies are needed to prevent their introduction, establishment and spread. Specifically, marine invasive predators destabilize ecological interactions and alter community structure and function. However, most of the evidence showing the effect of these predators is restricted to a few species and regions, while for others the information remains scarce.
  2. This study experimentally evaluated the ecological effects of the sea slug Pleurobranchaea maculata, a recently introduced invasive predator, on the fouling communities of a cold-temperate port in the South-western Atlantic.
  3. The results show that increasing predation pressure reduces significantly the abundance of sea anemones, which are among the preferred prey items.
  4. This study reveals new evidence to help better understand the effects of P. maculata on the biological communities of a recently invaded region. Furthermore, it provides the first experimental evidence supporting the hypothesis that marine invasive predators can induce a significant decrease in the abundance of native species in benthic communities of cold-temperate marine environments in the South-western Atlantic.

Host trees can modify their soil abiotic conditions through their leaf fall quality which in turn may influence the ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal community composition. We investigated this indirect interaction using a causal modelling approach. We identified ECM fungi on the roots of two coexisting oak species growing in two forests in southern Spain - Quercus suber (evergreen) and Quercus canariensis (winter deciduous)-using a PCR-based molecular method. We also analysed the leaf fall, litter and soil sampled beneath the tree canopies to determine the concentrations of key nutrients. The total mycorrhizal pool was comprised of 69 operational taxonomic units (OTUs). Tomentella and Russula were the most species-rich, frequent and abundant genera. ECM fungi with epigeous and resupinate fruiting bodies were found in 60% and 34% of the identified mycorrhizas, respectively. The calcium content of litter, which was significantly higher beneath the winter-deciduous oak species due to differences in leaf fall quality, was the most important variable for explaining ECM species distribution. The evaluation of alternative causal models by the d-sep method revealed that only those considering indirect leaf fall-mediated host effects statistically matched the observed covariation patterns between host, environment (litter, topsoil, subsoil) and fungal community variables.  相似文献

The larval and early juvenile period is critical in the life cycle of the endangered June sucker, Chasmistes liorus (Teleostei: Catostomidae). High larval and juvenile mortality leads to low recruitment to the breeding population and hence a declining natural population. To understand diet composition and dynamics in June sucker at early life stages, diet was quantified and compared to available food items in the natural environment during the early juvenile stage. Rotifers (Brachionus sp.) were the primary diet item at week 10, but by week 12 a small cyclopoid copepod (Microcyclops rubellus) became predominant. Availability of diet items varied little across the experimental period. The increase in size of young suckers may explain this rapid dietary shift, but there are some inconsistencies with the size selection argument. This diet shift represents an important nutritional change that should be considered in development of diets for young June sucker and in assessing suitability of nursery habitats.  相似文献

High N fertilizer and flooding irrigation applied to rice in anthropogenic‐alluvial soil often result in N leaching and low use efficiency of applied fertilizer N from the rice field in Ningxia irrigation region in the upper reaches of the Yellow River. Sound N management practices need to be established to improve N use efficiency while sustaining high grain yield levels and minimize fertilizer N loss to the environment. We investigated the effects of Nursery Box Total Fertilization technology (NBTF) on N leaching at different rice growing stages, N use efficiency and rice yield in 2010 and 2011. The four fertilizer N treatments were 300 kg N ha−1 (CU, Conventional treatment of urea at 300 kg N ha−1), 120 kg N ha−1 (NBTF120, NBTF treatment of controlled‐release N fertilizer at 120 kg N ha−1), 80 kgN ha−1 (NBTF80, NBTF treatment of controlled‐release N fertilizer at 80 kg N ha−1) and no N fertilizer application treatment (CK). The results showed that the NBTF120 treatment increased N use efficiency, maintained crop yields and substantially reduced N losses to the environment. Under the CU treatment, the rice yield was 9634 and 7098 kg ha−1, the N use efficiency was 31·6% and 34·8% and the leaching losses of TN were 44·51 and 39·89 kg ha−1; NH4+‐N was 5·26 and 5·49 kg ha−1, and NO3‐N was 27·94 and 26·22 kg ha−1 during the rice whole growing period in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Compared with CU, NBTF120 significantly increased the N use efficiency and decreased the N losses from the paddy field. Under NBTF120, the N use efficiency was 56·3% and 51·4%, which was 24·7% and 16·6% higher than that of CU, and the conventional fertilizer application rate could be reduced by 60% without lowering the rice yield while decreasing the leaching losses of TN by 16·27 and 14·36 kg ha−1, NH4+‐N by 0·90 and 1·84 kg ha−1, NO3‐N by 110·6 and 10·14 kg ha−1 in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Our results indicate that the CU treatment resulted in relatively high N leaching losses, and that alternative practice of NBTF which synchronized fertilizer application with crop demand substantially reduced these losses. We therefore suggest the NBTF120 be a fertilizer application alternative which leads to high food production but low environmental impact. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

以丰产性好、抗旱力强的栽培大豆晋豆23为母本,山西农家品种半野生大豆灰布支黑豆为父本杂交衍生的447个RIL作为供试群体。将亲本及447个家系分别于2011、2012和2013年采用随机试验种植,按照标准测量叶长、叶宽和叶柄长3个性状,并于2012年8月1日和8月8日和2013年8月2日和8月9日各测量1次叶绿素含量。采用QTLNETwork 2.0混合线性模型分析方法和主基因+多基因混合遗传分离分析法,对大豆叶片性状和叶绿素含量进行遗传分析和QTL间的上位性和环境互作效应研究。结果表明,叶长受2对加性-加性×加性上位性混合主基因控制,叶宽受3对等效主基因控制,叶柄长受4对加性-加性×加性上位性主基因控制,叶绿素含量受4对加性主基因控制;检测到10个与叶长、叶宽、叶柄长和叶绿素含量相关的QTL,分别位于A1、A2、C2、H_1、L和O染色体。其中2个叶长QTL分别位于C2和L染色体,是2对加性×加性上位互作效应及环境互作效应QTL;3个叶宽加性与环境互作QTL分别位于A2、C2和O染色体;2个叶柄长QTL分别位于L和O染色体;3个叶绿素含量QTL分别位于A1、C2和H_1染色体。叶片性状和叶绿素含量的遗传机制较复杂,加性效应、加性×加性上位互作效应及环境互作效应是大豆叶片性状和叶绿素含量的重要遗传基础。建议大豆分子标记辅助育种中,一方面要考虑起主要作用的QTL,另一方面要注重上位性QTL的影响,这对于性状的遗传和稳定表达具有积极的意义。  相似文献

Summary There is an increasing number of stability parameters for genotypes grown in different environments. It is therefore useful to study the statistical relations between these parameters. One approach is the calculation of rank correlations between different stability parameters in empirical data sets. In the data analysed there are high rank correlations between ecovalence Wi, deviation mean square s2 di, the nonparametric measures Si (1), Si (2), and two new measures Ri and Li as well as between environmental variance S2 xi and regression coefficient bi. The results suggest that Si (1), Si (2), Li, and Ri can be used as alternatives to Wi and the stability variance 2 i. This may be worthwhile, if certain statistical assumptions do not hold, particularly if significance testing is needed.  相似文献
