Expeditions were conducted in the Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands and United Kingdom in 2001 (partly 1998) to study Lactuca serriola L. (prickly lettuce, compass plant) geographic distribution, ecology, habitat characteristics and occurrence of diseases and pests on this species. During these missions the seed material of L. serriola L. was collected in an east–west transect of these four countries. The European transect where seeds were collected and field observations were made represents a relatively large area between 2°34′50′′ W–17°32′46′′ E and 47°40′42′′–54°04′19′′ N. The seed material was used for regeneration, inclusion in the national genetic resources collections of individual countries and for research purposes in follow-up studies. During the missions, 50 locations with occurrence of L. serriola L. were visited (16 in Czech Republic and Germany, 10 in UK and 8 in the Netherlands). Individual seed lots of sixteen different plants were collected at each location (L. serriola L. population). Thus, in total 800 seed samples were collected. In Czech Republic and Germany L. serriola L. f. serriola dominated in all observed populations, in the Netherlands both f. serriola and f. integrifolia occurred in pure or mixed stands, whereas in the United Kingdom L. serriola L. f. integrifolia (S.F. Gray) S.D. Prince et R.N. Carter was dominant. L. serriola L. was recorded at various altitudes (−4 to 410 m), different habitats (ditches, along roads, fields and field margins, ruderal places, pavements and parking sites, fallow fields), individual populations varied substantially in size (20 to >1000 plants), area covered (25–10,000 m2), and the structure and character of associated plant communities. Natural infections by downy mildew (Bremia lactucae Regel) and powdery mildew (Golovinomyces cichoracearum (DC.) V.P. Gelyuta) were observed in some populations. B. lactucae Regel was recorded only in Czech Republic, G. cichoracearum (DC.) V.P. Gelyuta was more common in continental Europe. General and specific aspects of L. serriola L. geographic distribution and ecology are discussed.  相似文献

Grizzly bear (Ursus arctos L.) populations in Alberta are threatened by habitat loss and high rates of human-caused mortality. Spatial depictions of fitness would greatly improve management and conservation action. We are currently challenged, however, in our ability to parameterize demographic rates necessary for describing fitness, especially across gradients of human disturbance and for land cover types. Alternative approaches are therefore needed. We describe here a method of estimating relative habitat states and conditions as surrogates of fitness using models of occupancy and mortality risk. By combining occurrence and risk models into a two-dimensional habitat framework, we identified indices of attractive sinks and safe harbour habitats, as well as five habitat states: non-critical habitats, secondary habitats (low-quality and secure), primary habitats (high-quality and secure), secondary sinks (low-quality, but high risk), and primary sinks (high-quality and high risk). Primary sink or high attractive sink situations were evident in the foothills where bears were using forest edges associated with forestry and oil and gas activities on Crown lands, while primary habitats or safe harbour sites were most common to protected alpine/sub-alpine sites. We suggest that habitat states and indices be used for setting baseline conditions for management and comparison of habitat conditions over time and identification of grizzly bear conservation reserves. A no net loss policy of critical habitats could be used to maintain existing habitat conditions for landscapes threatened by human development. Under such a policy, conversions of primary habitat would require restoration of equivalent amounts of primary sinks through decommissioning of roads.  相似文献

The unambiguous recognition of a species’ habitat is a matter of debate. For terrestrial species, habitat is often defined as physical patches of a certain vegetation type in a matrix of non-habitat. Ecological resources that make up the habitat of a species may, however, only cover subsets of vegetation types or can be spatially dispersed in a complex way over different vegetation types. Here we present and test a procedure to recognize and delineate habitat according to a resource-based approach instead of a vegetation-based approach. We used the green hairstreak butterfly (Callophrys rubi) in a heathland landscape as a study case. Our resource-based habitat approach selects those zones that comprise essential resources and conditions within an appropriate spatial window. Variables that were retained in a logistic regression model were used to calculate larval, adult and combined habitat indices in a GIS, taking into account thermal constraints on resource-use, as this is a key habitat aspect for this heliothermous insect. To group different (and sometimes scattered) ecological resources into functional habitat zones, we derived a measure of space-use from mark-release-recapture data. By least-cost modelling this spatial window was adapted to the nature of the vegetation between sets of resources. The habitat zones that were delineated using this approach matched the observed distribution of butterflies significantly better than did a classic approach based on vegetation types with host plants only. Our approach provides concrete output for conservation purposes, like recognizing zones with the highest potential for habitat restoration.  相似文献

Understory vegetation is an important habitat component for many wildlife species. Previous broad-scale studies on biodiversity and wildlife habitat have suffered from a lack of detailed information about understory distribution. Consequently, it is unclear how understory distribution influences the analysis of habitat quantity and spatial distribution. To address this problem, we compared estimates of giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) habitat with and without understory bamboo. The results show that the spatial distribution of bamboo has a substantial effect on the quantity and spatial arrangement of panda habitat. Total amount of estimated habitat decreased by 29-52% and decreased connectivity was notable after bamboo information was incorporated into the analyses. The decreases in the quantity and quality of panda habitat resulted in a decrease of 41% in the estimated carrying capacity. Our results suggest that it is necessary to incorporate understory vegetation into large-scale wildlife habitat research and management to avoid overestimation of habitat and improve broad-scale analyses of species distributions and biodiversity estimates in general.  相似文献

We examined data on bird and reptile assemblages in a plantation landscape in southern New South Wales, south-eastern Australia, for evidence of threshold responses to the amount of native eucalypt vegetation in circular areas of 2000 and/or 1000 m around field survey sites. These circular areas contained varying proportions of native Eucalyptus and exotic radiata pine Pinus radiata forest thereby providing a basis for examining potential threshold effects in relation to the area of native vegetation cover. For bird species richness or the probability of detection of individual bird species we found no empirical evidence of a threshold response to the area of native vegetation cover, or any other potential explanatory variables. All relationships were characterised by considerable variability in the response data. “Broken-stick” relationships which involved sudden change points did not fit the response data better than smooth relationships obtained from generalised additive or linear models. As with birds, there was no evidence that a threshold model between lizard richness and the amount of native vegetation within 1000 m described the relationship any better than a smooth, continuous or other type of relationship. Several related factors may explain our results. An important one is that species-specific responses to landscape conditions mean that marked thresholds will not be seen for an aggregate measure like species richness at a given value for a given landscape variable. Another is that factors other than the amount of native vegetation may significantly influence underlying patterns of species occurrence. This highlights a need to be aware of the potential effects of various ecological processes, even when a substantial amount of native vegetation cover remains. Our findings do not rule out the possibility of the existence of threshold relationships. However, irrespective of the choice of measure of predictor variable (e.g., the amount of native vegetation cover), it will often be difficult to detect and estimate threshold responses due to high inherent variability - a characteristic of the vast majority of ecological datasets. Furthermore, even if it is possible to estimate functional (threshold) forms and although they might be useful from an explanatory perspective, in most instances they are likely to be of limited value in a predictive sense. This calls into question the practical significance of the threshold concept.  相似文献

The small Cape mountain zebra population in Gamka Mountain Nature Reserve represents a third of the entire gene pool of this endangered species and is thus vital for it’s conservation. Presently, management of this population is largely hands off, with the belief that it will grow to levels which will allow it to form a source for the mixing of mountain zebra stocks in the future. The growth of this population however, has been slow and we investigated the influence of habitat and fire on this growth. Firstly, we used a diffusion model to perform a population viability analysis. This analysis indicated that the population had a low probability of attaining quasi-extinction in the next 50 years (G = 0.0032). However, our findings indicated that less than 30% of the reserve was suitable for mountain zebra and that the preferred habitat would have to be burnt at unnaturally short intervals to sustain the present growth. We therefore argue that the risk of quasi-extinction to this population is greater than predicted and suggest that management options need to be implemented to reduce this risk. These options include; translocation to another protected area; acquisition of adjacent land; burning preferred habitat at unnaturally short intervals; forming a conservancy with adjacent landowners; leasing cultivated land for pasture. We suggest that only the latter two options are likely to stimulate mountain zebra population growth in the short term and that these should receive immediate attention.  相似文献

A behaviour-based model was used to explore the effect of an extension of the port at Le Havre (Port 2000), and the effect of proposed mitigation measures, on the mortality and body condition of the three main shorebird species that overwinter in the estuary of the river Seine, France. In the model, a 20% reduction in the area of mudflats on the north side of the estuary had little effect on curlew Numenius arquata mortality and body condition but significantly increased mortality and decreased body condition in dunlin Calidris alpina and oystercatchers Haematopus ostralegus. Disturbance of feeding birds both day and night had a significant effect on the mortality and body condition of all three shorebird species, as did disturbance of roosting birds. Disturbance of feeding birds in the daytime only had a significant effect on dunlin mortality and body condition, but not that of curlew and oystercatchers. In the model, the creation of a buffer zone to reduce disturbance of feeding birds restored shorebird mortality and body condition to pre-disturbance levels. A new mudflat area was also effective in mitigating the effect of habitat loss on all three shorebirds and in mitigating the effect of roost disturbance on dunlin and curlew. However, a new mudflat area was not effective in mitigating the effect of roost disturbance on oystercatcher mortality and body condition. The effectiveness of the mitigating mudflat depended as much on its size as its quality. We believe that this is the first time that anyone has been able to forecast the efficacy of proposed mitigation measures.  相似文献

Many European blanket mires are degraded and contain few Sphagna. In Wales, more than half exhibit symptoms of degradation. We used palaeoecological techniques to chronicle recent vegetation history at two upland localities in South Wales to provide an understanding of the contribution of various factors in mire degradation and to aid wider conservation management strategies. The data suggest a major vegetation change post-dated the start of the industrial revolution. There was evidence for increased burning activity, but as this phenomenon was not present in all profiles it seems unlikely that fire was the principal or sole agent in vegetation change. Rather, increased atmospheric input, plus a change in grazing pressure, may have been responsible. The implications for conservation management are far-reaching. The present overwhelming dominance of Molinia at Hirwaun Common is unprecedented. So also is a local dominance of Calluna, shown in one area at Mynydd Llangatwg. Hence, the approbation often accorded to Callunetum needs to be tempered with the knowledge that its presence in the Mynydd Llangatwg landscape is not long-standing. Indeed, millennial-scale dominance of Sphagnum imbricatum characterizes the earlier record. Its demise and that of Drosera intermedia took place in historical times. Both localities show floristic impoverishment within the 20th Century, with relatively recent single-taxon supremacy. So, conservation management to reduce the current pre-eminence of Molinia would not run counter to long-established dominance; ways to achieve this are suggested. The methods used in this study have wide applicability in mire conservation.  相似文献

Strategies are needed to recover the ocelot Leopardus pardalis from the endangered species list. Recently, a population viability analysis (PVA) was developed which concluded that combinations of different recovery strategies were needed to effectively reduce ocelot extinction probability in the United States (US), with habitat protection and restoration identified as the most effective recovery scenario. We expanded this PVA model by incorporating landscape data to develop a more realistic habitat-based PVA for ocelots in southern Texas. We used RAMAS/gis software to conduct a habitat-based PVA by linking landscape data with a demographic metapopulation model. The primary goal of this study was to provide a model for evaluating ocelot recovery strategies in the US. Each model scenario was simulated 1000 times over 50 years and we defined extinction as one individual remaining. Using the RAMAS/gis program we identified 11 possible ocelot habitat patches (i.e., subpopulations) occurring in southern Texas. In addition, based on the habitat-based PVA model we found that combinations of different recovery strategies were needed to effectively reduce ocelot extinction probability in the US, with reducing road mortality the single most effective strategy. Short-term recovery strategies should include reducing ocelot road mortality, and translocation of ocelots into the US from northern Mexico. Long-term recovery strategies should include the restoration of habitat between and around existing ocelot habitat patches and the establishment of a dispersal corridor between ocelot breeding populations.  相似文献

We studied population extinction of the locally abundant fen plant Swertia perennis in Switzerland and used up to 127-year old herbarium records to relocate 63 sites that had once hosted this species. We recorded current site characteristics and related them to the absence or abundance of populations. Fifty-four sites (86%) were still traditionally used (extensively mown or grazed). Fifteen populations (24%) had gone extinct. Extinction was more likely at lower altitude, in the peripheral distribution range of S. perennis (58% peripheral, 9% central populations extinct), on the smallest fens (75% extinct on fens <400 m2) and on fens with intensified land use. However, even on traditionally managed wetlands 18.5% of the populations had gone extinct. Moreover, 40% of all remaining populations were smaller than 250 flowering plants. We conclude that both intensified agricultural practice and habitat fragmentation contributed to local extinction of S. perennis. Small populations, especially, may not be able to persist in the long term.  相似文献
