Abstract The effect of different cleaning treatments on moose (Alces alces L.) damage to Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) was examined using a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) with a binomial response (logit-link function). The treatments were the following: no cleaning, point-cleaning of broadleaves (mainly birch, Betula pendula Roth and B. pubescens Ehrh.) within a radius of 1 m from the pine, point-cleaning delayed 2 years, topping of competing broadleaves (main stem cut at a height of 1.3 m) and total cleaning of broadleaves. A randomized complete block design with three replicates was established in three planted pine stands (mean height of pines 1.5 m). Measurements taken four growing seasons later (mean height of pines 3.5 m) showed that all cleaning treatments reduced moose damage, although the difference was not significant (p=0.078) in the case of topping. The proportion of damaged pines was predicted as a function of the characteristics of pines and broadleaves in two untreated, planted pine stands with a height of 3 m. Within these untreated stands the number of damaged pines increased in plots with a higher number of broadleaves and taller broadleaves. In conclusion, the results show that on relatively fertile growing sites of pine cleaning treatments reduced moose damage on pine. It is recommended that cleaning is performed before broadleaved trees occur as overgrowth above pines. 相似文献

Abstract Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref. is a fungal pathogen causing annosum root rot – one of the most economically important diseases in coniferous stands. The major aim of this study was to compare the resistance of the offspring of Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris L.) from seed orchards and the offspring of trees that were naturally reproduced in old foci of the disease. In experiments conducted in vitro, we used 960 seedlings which were grown from seeds collected from 60 trees in 6 old foci of the disease and 640 seedlings grown from seeds collected in 4 seed orchards. The offspring of trees from seed orchards after inoculation with H. annosum had nearly twofold higher mortality rate than the seedlings developed from the seeds collected in old foci of the disease. This suggests that the offspring of self-sown trees in old foci of the disease has a greater, genetically conditioned resistance to annosum root rot. 相似文献

The need to regenerate peatland forests is expected to increase in the near future in Finland due to harvest of large amounts of peatlands drained during the 1950s and 1960s. In anticipation of this, a new type of excavator-mounted rototiller for soil scarification in peatlands has been developed in Finland to improve the moisture conditions of the seedbed by mixing the ground vegetation, raw humus layer, and peat. The regeneration result of the new rototiller was compared with traditional patch scarification (i.e. scalping) in direct seeding of Scots pine in three forestry-drained peatland sites in eastern Finland. After two growing seasons, rototilling offered no advantage over scalping in terms of the number of established seedlings, probability of empty patches, or seedling height. Seedling establishment was on average higher on scalping (10%) than on rototilling (8%). The main problem in rototilling may have been the loose and porous structure of the seedbed resulting in drought and frost damages. 相似文献

Yellow Cress (Rorippa sylvestris (L.) Besser), a weed difficult to control when established, has recently invaded Swedish nurseries. The properties of the species, as well as measures to avoid its further spreading, are described based on an exhaustive dissertation, other literature and own observations. It is most important to apply preventive measures to stop the species from being introduced and to observe the first establishment phases of the species. The effect of simulated acid rain on the performance of Neodiprion sertifer larvae fed on treated Scots pine needles was tested in a subarctic area with low ambient pollution level. Acid rain treatments (pH 4 and pH 3, both with H2SO4 and HNO3) did not significantly affect the relative growth rates or cocoon weights of N. sertifer 2 or 3 years after the start of the treatments. The relative growth rate of N. sertifer larvae was slightly (nonsignifi‐cantly) higher on plots receiving only ambient rain than on irrigated control plots. The quality of foliage before the start of the treatments explained a significant proportion of the variation in the performance of N. sertifer larvae in the bioassay conducted 3 years later. 相似文献

The joint levels of outcrossing and contamination in two young northern Swedish Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seed orchards were studied with the aid of allozyme markers. High levels of contamination (21–36%) were estimated and were attributed to the observed low within orchard pollen production. Outcrossing rate estimates were high (0.957–0.961), though they departed significantly from complete outcrossing (t= 1.0) in spite of the observed high contamination levels. These results confirmed reported relationships between outcrossing and contamination levels in open‐pollinated seed orchards. It was concluded that a crop management option relying on supplemental mass‐pollination would be effective in reducing both contamination and inbreeding levels. 相似文献

The proportion of background pollen grains in the seed crops of two Pinus sylvestris seed orchards in Central Finland was estimated with the aid of multilocus allozyme markers. The orchards studied were more than 30 years old and in full pollen production. For the bulked seed crops of the seed orchard with southern clones the estimated average of background pollination over four years was 26%. There were statistically significant differences between years. No significant heterogeneity in the degree of background pollination between clones was found. Among single ramets there was significant heterogeneity in the estimated contamination rates, but the variation was not related to position in the orchard. For the seed orchard with northern clones the bulked seed crop was studied only for one year and the level of background pollination was found to be 33 %. These estimates are fairly high, but lower than for many other orchards. Background pollination at this level will cause losses in expected genetic gains. Part of the seeds from northern orchards will not be adapted to the intended area of use. 相似文献

The common rhizospheric fungus Cylindrocarpon destructans was investigated in relation to its role in root death of Pinus sylvestris in Nordic nurseries and plantations. Laboratory methods were developed for studying similar root problems as well as the early effects of phytotoxicity and fungal infection. Seedlings grown under standardized optimal conditions were exposed to controlled stress (known to occur in nurseries), with or without C. destructans in the rhizosphere. Low light conditions, anaerobic root environment, and fungicide treatment were each found to predispose pine seedlings to invasion by the pathogen. The pathogen was very sensitive to competition as well as antagonism on the root, and fungicide‐induced inhibition of antagonists such as Trichoderma spp. also increased the severity of attack by the pathogen. To compete successfully, the pathogen would have to invade and dominate weakened roots prior to the arrival of saprophytes. Toxic metabolites produced by the pathogen weakened or killed nearby root tissues, and pathogen metabolites seemed to prevent saprophytes from taking hold in the infected roots. Such heavily infected, dead roots may act as inoculum sources allowing the pathogen to invade adjacent living roots, even healthy ones. Dead roots left in nursery soil after earlier harvests may act as reservoirs of inoculum for long periods and pose a threat to new plants. 相似文献

Scots pine and different provenances of lodgepole pine were compared in regard to root characteristics and the distribution of biomass within individual trees. Tap root formation was more frequent and the root/shoot ratio was higher on Scots pine than on lodgepole pine but significant variation of these traits was found between provenances of planted lodgepole pine. The probability of achieving an anatomically mature seed crop of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in Northern Finland has been studied on the basis of earlier data and meteorological observations. The meteorological data over the period of 1951–1980 was used to calculate the probability of having a mature seed crop in various parts of Northern Finland. The climatic variables used were: (a) June‐August mean temperature (b) June—September mean temperature, and (c) annual temperature sum (+5°C base temperature). A non‐linear relationship between the percentage of mature seeds in a seed crop and the annual temperature sum was detected, indicating that 50% mature seed crop was achieved at appr. 890 degree days. The results suggest that the probability of having 50% mature seed crop is approximately 0.02–0.03 near the polar timber line. The probability of the occurrence of such years is, however, considerably higher in lowlands and lake districts even near the timber line. 相似文献
