The authors propose an automated method of generating slope maps. Starting from a topographical map, a Digitized Terrain Model is build up and completed with a morphological matrix. By determining the representative slope for each grid cell an impression of the geographical distribution of the different slope values is obtained. In two test areas in Dry Hesbaye (E. Belgium), where the results were compared with a detailed manually constructed slope map, the applicability and advantages of the method for general purposes are demontrated.  相似文献

Forest structure and productivity was investigated in a 12-year-old Rhizophora mucronata Lam. plantation at Gazi Bay, Kenya. Sampling was carried out in 22, 10 m × 10 m quadrats laid along belt transects perpendicular to the waterline. Within each quadrat all trees with stem diameter greater than 2.5 cm were identified, position marked and counted. Vegetation measurements included tree height (m), canopy cover (%) and stem diameter measured at 1.3 m above the ground (D130); from which were derived basal area (m2/ha); stand density (stems/ha) and biomass (t/ha). Information regarding composition and distribution of juveniles was derived using linear regeneration sampling (LRS). The replanted forest had a stand density of 5132 stems/ha; with a mean canopy height and stem diameter of 8.4 ± 1.1 m (range: 3.0–11.0 m) and 6.2 ± 1.87 cm (range: 2.5–12.4 cm), respectively. The total juvenile density was 4886 saplings per hectare; 78.6% of which constituted the parental canopy. The standing biomass for the 12-year-old R. mucronata plantation was 106.7 ± 24.0 t/ha, giving a biomass accumulation rate of 8.9 t/(ha year).  相似文献

Urban environments are often characterized by extensive paved surfaces, exacerbating the urban heat island effect. At the same time, limited root space due to underground infrastructure poses a challenge for planting new trees in these areas. Trees in planters have emerged as popular design elements, offering innovative and sustainable greening solutions, particularly in urban environments with limited rooting space. However, growing conditions in planters may strongly impact tree growth and the provision of environmental ecosystem services (ES). In this 3-year study, we analyzed tree growth and ecosystem services (cooling by shading, CO2-fixation) of London plane (Platanus x hispanica Münchh.) and small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.) in four planting treatments: in-ground (G), planters in the ground (PG), non-insulated plastic planters (P), and insulated planters (PI). We also recorded soil temperature throughout the experiment and implemented soil drought conditions by reducing soil irrigation for half of the trees after one year. Our findings revealed higher thermal fluctuations in soil temperature within non-insulated plastic planters (P), reaching a maximum of 45 °C, surpassing the critical temperature threshold for plant growth (>38 °C). In contrast, insulated planters (PI) effectively mitigated soil temperatures, staying below 33.8 °C. When planted in the ground (G), P. x hispanica exhibited a significantly higher stem diameter increment (52–66%) compared to other planting treatments, aligning with the provision of ecosystem services. However, T. cordata trees showed a more moderate response to planting treatments in terms of growth and ecosystem service provision. Furthermore, the implementation of soil drought conditions resulted in a reduction of up to 34% in stem diameter increment for P. x hispanica and up to 25% for T. cordata. Our results underscore the necessity of tree species-specific knowledge about growth responses to different planting treatments for effective urban planning perspectives, as the provision of ecosystem services may be influenced differently.  相似文献

BackgroundParks provide many opportunities for promoting physical, social, and mental wellbeing among older adults and are therefore considered a good setting to promote healthy ageing. However, older adults are the age group least frequently observed visiting parks. To attract more older adults to parks, it is important to understand their needs and preferences for park design. The aim of this qualitative study was to gain in-depth information about older adults’ preferred park features for park visitation.MethodsSemi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 older adults aged > 60 years who visited a recently renewed urban park in Ghent, Belgium at least once since its renewal. The interviews were conducted in-park or in the nursing home adjacent to the park until saturation of information was obtained. All interviews were transcribed verbatim, pseudonymised, and analysed by inductive content analysis using NVivo 12 software.ResultsThe most preferred park activities were walking, sitting, and watching the environment. The park features liked by older adults were good quality and accessible walking paths, nature and vegetation, openness and structural layout of the park, and sufficient and good quality sitting areas. The park features that they did not like mostly related to poor park maintenance.ConclusionsThis study provides an overview of park features that older adults perceive as important for park visitation. It is the first qualitative study in Belgium to assess which park features entice older adults to visit parks, and it contributes to the limited European knowledge on this topic. The evidence can help urban planners, landscape architects, and policymakers to (re)design attractive local parks that promote healthy ageing.  相似文献

Due to their close proximity to the mammary gland tissue, the bacterial communities lining the teat apex of the udders from lactating cows influence udder health. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of the amplified V3 variable region of the 16S rRNA gene was used as a culture-independent method to reveal the bacterial composition of 48 samples originating from the teat apices of twelve Friesian-Holstein dairy cows suffering from clinical mastitis in one quarter. The microbiota belonged to four bacterial phyla: the Actinobacteria (32% of all genera), the Bacteroidetes (1%), the Firmicutes (42%), and the Proteobacteria (25%), encompassing 17 bacterial genera. Some differences in occurrence of these genera were seen when comparing quarters that were non-infected (n=22), subclinically infected (n=14), or clinically infected (n=12). Besides commensal skin-associated bacteria, opportunistic pathogenic bacteria, and mastitis-causing pathogens were found as well. The species diversity varied considerably among the most prevalent bacterial genera. While Corynebacterium and Staphylococcus displayed a large diversity among the recovered sequences, indicating the possible presence of a variety of different species, only a single bacterial species (represented by one sequence) was obtained for the genera Aerococcus, Acinetobacter, and Psychrobacter. In conclusion, introducing culture-independent analysis of teat apical skin swabs in mastitis research revealed an unexpected wide bacterial diversity, with variations between quarters with a different clinical status. In addition to potential mastitis-causing pathogens, it exposed the yet poorly mapped presence of skin-associated and other bacteria residing in close proximity to the mammary gland tissue. PCR-DGGE may thus be considered as a useful tool for the entanglement of animal skin microbiota, in casu the teat apices of dairy cows.  相似文献

Collaborative resource management agreements (CRMAs) have been introduced to improve people–park relations and enhance rural livelihoods. Based on household surveys, key informant interviews, focus group discussions and a review of literature we investigated differences in livelihood assets, park dependence and livelihood outcomes for households with and without CRMAs. We investigated the role of park environmental incomes (PEI) in poverty alleviation and factors influencing dependency on PEI. Results revealed significant differences in household assets but no significant differences in park dependence and livelihood outcomes. People report that PEI on average constitute 18% of total incomes. Poor households have a higher dependency on PEI and it reduces income inequality by 13%.CRMAs have a significant positive effect on total PEI but no significant effect on total household income and relative environmental income. In areas with CRMAs, taungya farming and bee keeping practiced as part of the CRMAs increase annual household incomes by 26% and 28% respectively and constitute potential pathways out of poverty. However, the impact of the agreements is still low due to their limited scale and coverage and the targeting criteria which limits access for communities with a high dependency on park resources and high levels of conflict.  相似文献

How successful are plant species reintroductions?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Reintroduction of native species has become increasingly important in conservation worldwide for recovery of rare species and restoration purposes. However, few studies have reported the outcome of reintroduction efforts in plant species. Using data from the literature combined with a questionnaire survey, this paper analyses 249 plant species reintroductions worldwide by assessing the methods used and the results obtained from these reintroduction experiments. The objectives were: (1) to examine how successful plant species reintroductions have been so far in establishing or significantly augmenting viable, self-sustaining populations in nature; (2) to determine the conditions under which we might expect plant species reintroductions to be most successful; (3) to make the results of this survey available for future plant reintroduction trials. Results indicate that survival, flowering and fruiting rates of reintroduced plants are generally quite low (on average 52%, 19% and 16%, respectively). Furthermore, our results show a success rate decline in individual experiments with time. Survival rates reported in the literature are also much higher (78% on average) than those mentioned by survey participants (33% on average). We identified various parameters that positively influence plant reintroduction outcomes, e.g., working in protected sites, using seedlings, increasing the number of reintroduced individuals, mixing material from diverse populations, using transplants from stable source populations, site preparation or management effort and knowledge of the genetic variation of the target species. This study also revealed shortcomings of common experimental designs that greatly limit the interpretation of plant reintroduction studies: (1) insufficient monitoring following reintroduction (usually ceasing after 4 years); (2) inadequate documentation, which is especially acute for reintroductions that are regarded as failures; (3) lack of understanding of the underlying reasons for decline in existing plant populations; (4) overly optimistic evaluation of success based on short-term results; and (5) poorly defined success criteria for reintroduction projects. We therefore conclude that the value of plant reintroductions as a conservation tool could be improved by: (1) an increased focus on species biology; (2) using a higher number of transplants (preferring seedlings rather than seeds); (3) taking better account of seed production and recruitment when assessing the success of reintroductions; (4) a consistent long-term monitoring after reintroduction.  相似文献

The number of ex situ conservation facilities has grown dramatically in recent years, and they have become increasingly integrated under national and regional conservation initiatives. However, little information is available about the extent to which plant species are appropriately represented in ex situ collections. This paper assesses whether seed/spore collections stored in European seed banks cover or not, and to what extent, the species currently threatened with extinction in the wild. Although a substantial amount of the European flora (ca. 70%) is currently stored in seed banks, we highlight the relatively poor representation of threatened species: only 27% of the taxa listed on the European threatened plant list and 44% of the taxa listed in Annex II of the EU Habitat Directive are stored in European seed banks. Some taxonomical groups most at risk, e.g. Pteridophytes and Orchidaceae, are also under-represented in European seed banks. By examining the number of accessions per species and the number of seeds per accession, this study also gave some insight on how well species are conserved, considering that these two variables are surrogates for genetic diversity. We have highlighted that at least two thirds of the threatened species stored in European seed banks likely suffer from too low genetic diversity in the collections. These analyses were essential to identify those collections and additionally the standards needed to maximize the usefulness of future collections.  相似文献

Many studies in the muddy intertidal zone of temperate regions haveindicated meiofaunal communities to be mainly affected by epibenthicpredation and disturbance rather than competition. Few studies, however, have dealt with mangrove sediments of tropical areas. In addition to aparallel study in a Ceriops tagal (Perr.) Rob. zone, a manipulativeexclusion technique was used to trace the dominant biological interactionsstructuring the meiobenthos of an East African Avicennia marina (Forsk.)Vierh. mangrove forest. The densities of the major meiobenthic taxa and nematode genera and abroad range of environmental factors were monitored over a depth profile forone year of caging. Cages (1 m2) excluded all epibenthos (> 2 mm)for one year and were procedurally controlled. Procedural and exclusioneffects were traced, using a factorial and mixed ANOVA design. Significant exclusion effects were indicated for oligochaetes and for oneof the dominant epistratal feeding nematode genera. They are discussed interms of epibenthic composition and density, feeding behaviour, foodresources, and the abiotic environment. The conclusion is that the observed meiobenthos (especially oligochaetesand nematodes) is influenced mainly by exploitative or resource competitionwith the epibenthos. The common food source was indicated to be muddydetritus and microalgae. Consequently, the role of the meiobenthos is mainlysituated in an isolated, detrital food web with only minor energy fluxes tothe epibenthos.  相似文献
