Objective To document an ovine disease attributed to the consumption of Lythrum hyssopifolia (lesser loosestrife). Procedures Historical and histological review of field and experimental cases. Results 1–20% mortality occurred in sheep flocks grazing paddocks where L. hyssopifolia was the predominant green vegetation. Well‐documented disease outbreaks occurred in summer on nine farms across Victoria between 1974 and 2002. Liver damage occurred in all nine outbreaks, with kidney damage in at least eight. Hepatocyte necrosis was usually zonal to midzonal (zone 2) in the liver samples from four farms and periacinar (zone 3) in those from three farms, but some livers showed only single‐cell necrosis. Multinucleate hepatocytes near necrotic areas were a feature in six cases. Proximal tubular epithelium appeared to be the primary renal target and brown granules were often present in renal tubules. Biochemical and histological evidence of liver and kidney damage was obtained from two sheep experimentally pen‐fed harvested L. hyssopifolia. Conclusion Chemicals in L. hyssopifolia are toxic to ovine hepatocytes and renal tubular epithelial cells.  相似文献

Key message

Tree heights in the central Congo Basin are overestimated using best-available height-diameter models. These errors are propagated into the estimation of aboveground biomass and canopy height, causing significant bias when used for calibration of remote sensing products in this region.

Context

Tree height-diameter models are important components of estimating aboveground biomass (AGB) and calibrating remote sensing products in tropical forests.

Aims

For a data-poor area of the central Congo Basin, we quantified height-diameter model performance of local, regional and pan-tropical models for their use in estimating AGB and canopy height.

Methods

At three old-growth forest sites, we assessed the bias introduced in height estimation by regional and pan-tropical height-diameter models. We developed an optimal local model with site-level randomizations accounted for by using a mixed-effects modeling approach. We quantified the error propagation of modeled heights for estimating AGB and canopy height.

Results

Regional and pan-tropical height-diameter models produced a significant overestimation in tree height, propagating into significant overestimations of AGB and Lorey’s height. The pan-tropical model accounting for climatic drivers performed better than the regional models. We present a local height-diameter model which produced nonsignificant errors for AGB and canopy height estimations at our study area.

Conclusion

The application of general models at our study area introduced bias in tree height estimations and the derived stand-level variables. Improved delimitation of regions in tropical Africa with similar forest structure is needed to produce models fit for calibrating remote sensing products.

Different molecular markers are routinely used in studies of potato (Solanum tuberosum) and the genus Solanum in general. Genome sequence databases provide potential to design new markers for various applications. Here we present the application of a recently developed core set of nuclear intron-targeting (indel) markers. These markers are based on the fact that in the plant genome introns are more variable than exons; therefore primers flanking exons can reveal polymorphisms related to introns. We detected such variation among accessions of the eight different species of black nightshades (Solanum sect. Solanum). Members of this group are important sources of food, mostly in Africa, while others are poisonous weeds with near global distribution. The tested 29 primers were designed previously for potato based on Solanaceae EST and other genomic databases and targeted 16 different genes. Our results showed that Solanum intron-targeting markers are not very polymorphic but identified considerable structure among accessions indicating fairly high interspecies differentiation. Further analyses showed that inbreeding is unlikely to be the major driving force in determining the genetic structure of the analyzed species. All phylogenetic analyses resolved the species included in our study as distinct clades with high support values, but provided weak information about their internal relationships. In summary, indel markers would be useful for the assignment of new Solanum germplasm to taxonomic groups or to identify certain taxa. They could also be used to address important question about genetic diversity and should yield results comparable to other markers covering the whole genome.  相似文献

Background and Scope  

Lake sediment contains information on the historical development and former conditions of lakes, which is very useful when information about the undisturbed (reference) conditions of a lake is needed. Phytoplankton contains a range of different pigments, some of which are specific for individual algal groups and can be used as diagnostic markers. Phytoplankton pigments in lake sediments are indicators of prototrophic changes in lakes, since the pigments document changes in algae biomass and the composition of phytoplankton communities. Dead wood in European beech (Fagus sylvatica) forest reserves   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
Data were analysed on the volume of dead wood in 86 beech forest reserves, covering most of the range of European beech forests. The mean volume was 130 m3/ha and the variation among reserves was high, ranging from almost nil to 550 m3/ha. The volume depended significantly on forest type, age since reserve establishment and volume of living wood. More dead wood was found in montane (rather than lowland/submontane) reserves, longer-established reserves (time since designation) and reserves with higher volumes of living wood.

On average, fallen dead wood contributed more to the total dead wood volume than standing dead wood. The percentage of dead wood that was standing was almost twice as high in montane than in lowland/submontane forest reserves (45% versus 25%). The volume of dead wood at selected sites changed considerably over time. The fluctuations were significantly higher in lowland/submontane than montane reserves, possibly connected with differences in the disturbance regimes and especially damage caused by windstorms. In NW Europe, the blow down of formerly managed, even-aged stands led to extraordinary high volumes of dead wood shortly after reserve establishment.

The implications for forest management and biodiversity conservation are discussed. An increase in dead wood volumes must be carried out in accordance with the local/regional forest type and disturbance regime. Thus, in order to fulfil the requirements of as many wood-depending organisms as possible, it is important to preserve not only larger amounts of dead wood, but also dead wood of different types and dimensions as well as securing a long-term continuity of dead wood.  相似文献

In Egypt, some newly derived lines of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) as well as Giza 402, all of which had shown a certain resistance against the parasitic weed Orobanche crenata Forsk., were tested in the field. For reasons of comparison, the susceptible cultivars Giza 3 and Reina Blanca were included in this test. Faba bean plants and Orobanche attachments were regularly harvested and examined. The susceptible cultivars completely collapsed before the end of the growing season, whereas others, particularly line 402/294, remained alive until pod formation was completed. It appeared that fewer Orobanche spikes emerged on the new lines and Giza 402. Evidence is given that this was not due to avoidance mechanisms, such as smaller root mass, a deeper root system or lack of germination stimulants. Numbers of Orobanche attachments per unit of lateral root length were found to be low. Hence, it could be concluded that these lines are partially resistant; this resistance must be due to some defence mechanism in their roots. The few Orobanche plants attached grew very fast so that final Orobanche dry weight was similar in resistant and susceptible host plants. Further experiments, including broomrape-free controls, are required to study whether some tolerance mechanism might be involved.  相似文献

This report describes 5 cases of fatal Lawsonia intracellularis-associated ulcerative and necro-hemorrhagic enteritis in weanling Thoroughbred and Standardbred foals. The lesions are similar to those of the L. intracellularis-associated ulcerative and necro-hemorrhagic enteritis syndrome in pigs. Two foals had concurrent severe typhlo-colitis as a result of a large burden of encysted cyathostomes. The clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic challenges, and the potential complications encountered during the management of such cases are discussed.  相似文献
