Influence of Water Temperature on Morphological Deformities in Cultured Larvae of Japanese Eel,Anguilla japonica,at Completion of Yolk Resorption

The occurrence of morphological deformities under different rearing water temperatures (18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, and 30 C) was examined in Japanese eel larvae. The rates of hatching and survival until yolk resorption at 22–26 C were higher than those at other water temperatures. Fertilized eggs never hatched at 18 and 30 C. The rates of occurrence of abnormal larvae reared at the water temperatures 24–28 C were lower than those at 20 or 22 C. Pericardial edema and lower jaw deformities occurred most frequently at lower temperatures (20 and 22 C). In contrast, the incubation temperature did not significantly affect the relative frequency of some neurocranial deformities and of spinal curvature. These results imply that the optimal temperatures for rearing Japanese eel eggs and embryos are 24–26 C from the viewpoints of survival and deformity.     

Immunohistochemical studies on ontogeny of bovine lymphoid tissues.

Developing lymphoid tissues of bovine fetuses ranging from 70 to 270 days of fetal age were examined by histological and immunohistochemical procedures. In the peripheral blood, surface membrane immunoglobulin bearing cells (B-lymphocytes) and sheep red blood cell rosette forming cells (T-lymphocytes) had already appeared by 70 days of fetal age. In the lymph nodes intracytoplasmic IgM positive cells appeared at 90 days of fetal age. The cells positive for IgG appeared at 150 days of fetal age and IgA positive cells appeared at 180 days of fetal age. The spleen contained intracytoplasmic immunoglobulin positive cells at almost the same time as those in the lymph nodes. In the ileocecal region, IgM positive cells and IgG positive cells were present at 180 days of fetal age and IgA positive cells were present at 210 days of fetal age. The tonsils contained IgM positive cells and IgG positive cells at 240 days of fetal age. In the thymus, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase positive cells appeared at 90 days of fetal age.     

Multiple high-throughput analyses monitor the response of E. coli to perturbations

Analysis of cellular components at multiple levels of biological information can provide valuable functional insights. We performed multiple high-throughput measurements to study the response of Escherichia coli cells to genetic and environmental perturbations. Analysis of metabolic enzyme gene disruptants revealed unexpectedly small changes in messenger RNA and proteins for most disruptants. Overall, metabolite levels were also stable, reflecting the rerouting of fluxes in the metabolic network. In contrast, E. coli actively regulated enzyme levels to maintain a stable metabolic state in response to changes in growth rate. E. coli thus seems to use complementary strategies that result in a metabolic network robust against perturbations.     

Local ordering in the pseudogap state of the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+delta)

We report atomic-scale characterization of the pseudogap state in a high-Tc superconductor, Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+delta). The electronic states at low energies within the pseudogap exhibit spatial modulations having an energy-independent incommensurate periodicity. These patterns, which are oriented along the copper-oxygen bond directions, appear to be a consequence of an electronic ordering phenomenon, the observation of which correlates with the pseudogap in the density of electronic states. Our results provide a stringent test for various ordering scenarios in the cuprates, which have been central in the debate on the nature of the pseudogap and the complex electronic phase diagram of these compounds.     

Model Intercomparison Study of Long Range Transport and Sulfur Deposition in East Asia (MICS-ASIA)

To help improve the use of models in science & policy analysis in Asia it is necessary to have a better understanding of model performance and uncertainties. Towards this goal an intercomparison exercise has been initiated as a collaborative study of scientists interested in long-range transport in East Asia. An overview of this study is presented in this paper. The study consists of a set of prescribed test calculations with carefully controlled experiments. Models used the same domain, emission inventory, model parameters, meteorological conditions, etc. Two periods (January and May 1993) were selected to reflect long-range transport conditions under two distinct seasons. During these periods measurements of sulfur concentrations and deposition were made throughout the study region using identical sampling and analysis protocols. The intercomparison activity consists of four tasks (Blind Test, Fixed Parameter Test, Source Receptor test, and Tuning Test). All participants were asked to do Task A, and as many of the other tasks as possible. To date seven different models have participated in this study. Results and key findings are presented.     

Direct absorption of acylated anthocyanin in purple-fleshed sweet potato into rats

Absorption of acylated anthocyanins in purple-fleshed sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas cv. Ayamurasaki) in rats was studied to obtain evidence that the acylated anthocyanins themselves could exert a physiological function in vivo. Peonidin 3-caffeoylsophoroside-5-glucoside (Pn 3-Caf*sop-5-glc) in purple-fleshed sweet potato was directly absorbed into rat and present as an intact acylated form in plasma. After oral administration of the purple-fleshed sweet potato anthocyanin (PSA) concentrate containing 38.9 micromol of Pn 3-Caf*sop-5-glc/kg of body weight, Pn 3-Caf*sop-5-glc was detected in the plasma, and the C(max) value and t(max) were estimated as 50.0 +/- 6.8 nmol/Lof plasma and 30 min, respectively. Furthermore, the plasma antioxidant capacity was significantly elevated from 58.0 +/- 12.0 to 89.2 +/- 6.8 micromol of Trolox equivalent/L of plasma 30 min after the administration of the PSA concentrate.     

Effect of seed coat color on seed dormancy in different environments

Arachis glabrata Benth, variety glabrata coll. GK 10596 (PI 276233; ICG8176) belonging to section Rhizomatosae has multiple disease resistance. Fertile hybrids between A. hypogaea L. and A. glabrata, A. duranensis Krapov & W.C. Gregory and A. glabrata and A. diogoi Hoehne and A. glabrata were produced. Introgression of DNA from A. glabrata into A. hypogaea, A. duranensis and A. diogoi was analyzed by isozyme and RAPD analyses. Hybrids were backcrossed and BC₁ seeds were obtained in all the three hybrids. Hybrids were evaluated for the transfer of disease resistance genes from A. glabrata, which was confirmed. RAPD analysis with several primers showed that DNA fragment pattern were not simply represented, instead there were new bands and several parental bands were absent in the interspecific derivatives.
