To understand how Japanese sardine eggs vertically disperse in water, we acquired a series of depth‐resolved samples of eggs while tracking a drogued buoy to follow the water mass in which the eggs were spawned. This survey was conducted in early March of 1991, when the sardine population was abundant and actively spawning in the Pacific off Kyushu. Buoyancy of the eggs was estimated by measuring the specific gravity, and was 1–4 × 10?3 less than that of the water in which they were spawned, giving a rising speed of 1–2 mm s?1. In an attempt to diagnose the dynamics underlying the observed vertical profiles of the eggs, a one‐dimensional egg distribution model incorporating the egg rising speed and wind‐ and depth‐dependent vertical diffusivity was formulated. Observed eggs were mainly in the surface mixed layer, and their vertical distribution changed with wind‐induced surface mixing: during strong winds, the eggs were distributed relatively evenly over the upper 60–75 m, whereas during weak winds and shallow pycnocline, the eggs formed a subsurface peak around 25 m depth. The model accurately reproduced these variations in the vertical distributions of eggs, suggesting that the gradients of egg concentration are sensitive to the strength of wind and the structure of underlying hydrography. Further tests with the model showed the importance of positive buoyancy: neutrally buoyant eggs formed subsurface maxima below the food‐rich euphotic zone. The balance of vertical mixing and floating, which allows the eggs to remain in the euphotic zone but away from the near‐surface waters, may be an adaptation to minimize surface‐enhanced predation, while allowing the eggs to hatch in the food‐rich euphotic zone. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: In the present study, we compared the advantage of marine protected areas (MPA) to the reduction of the fishing mortality coefficient ( F ). We accomplished this by comparing the yield per recruitment (YPR) and spawner biomass per recruitment (SPR) under two controls. This was accomplished using a mathematical model. We used the following five measures as comparisons: (i) the condition of the fishery where the increase in YPR is possible; (ii) the increase in YPR or SPR obtained by allocating half the fishing ground as an MPA and by reducing F by half; (iii) the maximum YPR obtainable when the fishing mortality coefficient or the proportion of MPA in the fishing ground is completely controlled; (iv) the proportion of the MPA and the reduction ratio of F required for attaining 30% SPR; and (v) the YPR obtainable while maintaining 30% SPR. Our results show that the MPA has a minor disadvantage in terms of the first measure. The MPA is advantageous in increasing SPR in the second measure, with a low migration rate of fish. The MPA is also advantageous in increasing YPR in the second measure, with some intermediate migration. The MPA is disadvantageous in the third measure. The MPA is advantageous in the fourth measure, with a low migration rate. The MPA is disadvantageous in the fifth measure. 相似文献

Changes in the C-reactive protein (CRP) and 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2α (PGFM) concentrations of uterine lavage fluid were examined in cows given an intrauterine povidone-iodine (PI) infusion. The mean polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) ratios (the ratio of PMN to total cells) and CRP concentration of uterine lavage fluid on the day after the treatment were significantly (P<0.05) greater in the PI infusion group (PMN: 53.0 ± 32.7%, CRP: 50.2 ± 32.3 ng/mL) than in the non-treatment control group (PMN: 7.9 ± 21.9%, CRP: 17.2 ± 5.9 ng/mL), whereas there was no significant difference in the mean PGFM concentration between the two groups. The present findings suggest that the uterine CRP level is a useful biomarker of local uterine inflammation in cows. 相似文献

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is an infectious swine disease caused by the PRRS virus (PRRSV) that results in economic loss to the pig-rearing industry. To study PRRSV infection in wild boars and pigs, we conducted a serological survey in Gifu Prefecture, Japan, from 2020 to 2021. Three out of 453 (0.7%) wild boar sera were positive for PRRSV antibodies in a commercial ELISA. However, given that PRRSV RNA was not detected in these three wild boars and the specificity and sensitivity of the test kit, these are considered as false positives. Although seropositive pigs were found in multiple pig farms in the study area, the role of wild boars as a source of PRRS to pig farms appeared to be minimal. 相似文献

We report a case of systemic metastasis of malignant melanoma in a mini-Rex (Oryctolagus cuniculus). The animal presented with lameness of the right hind limb, swelling of popliteal lymph node, and a black mass on the first digit. Paralysis of hindlimbs and forelimbs, dysuria, and dysphagia progressed over time, and the rabbit died on day 35 from the first visit. At necropsy, many black lesions were observed in multiple organs including the marrow of most bones. Histopathologically, the tumor cells had highly atypical nuclei of various sizes and an abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, and some cells contained melanin granules. These cells were positive for PNL2 and S-100, melanoma markers, by immunohistochemistry. This is the first report of malignant melanoma in a mini-Rex with severe malignancy and systemic metastasis including the bone marrow. 相似文献
