In vivo experiments were conducted to verify whether arabinoxylooligosaccharides (AXOS) obtained as low molecular mass compounds by enzymic hydrolysis from wheat bran arabinoxylan (AX) can exert nutritional effects. Two feeding trials were performed on chickens fed diets with either wheat or maize as the main component. Supplementation of bran AXOS at either 0.5% (w/w) to the wheat‐based diet or at 0.25% (w/w) to the maize‐based diet diets significantly (P < 0.05) improved the feed conversion rate without increasing the body weight of the animals, thus pointing to improved nutrient utilization efficiency. The positive effect of bran AXOS supplementation on feed utilization efficiency was similar to that obtained by adding an AX‐degrading xylanase directly to the wheat‐based diet. No significant effect on feed utilization efficiency was obtained with another type of nondigestible oligosaccharide such as fructooligosaccharides (FOS) derived from chicory roots. Bran AXOS significantly increased the level of bifidobacteria but not total bacteria in the caeca of the chickens, an effect not observed with either xylanase or FOS addition. Hyperkalemia is one of the most common electrolyte disorders. By injecting various concentrations of potassium chloride (KCl) solutions intravenously into bullfrogs, we demonstrated characteristic electrocardiogram (ECG) abnormalities of hyperkalemia in frog hearts. The widened QRS complexes induced by 100 mM KCl injection were accompanied by an increase in the resting membrane potential in cardiomyocytes and a decreased slope of phase 0 in the action potential. Recording both ECG waveforms and the cardiac action potential enabled us to reveal the mechanisms of hyperkalemia-induced ECG abnormalities. Additionally, pre-treatment with insulin, a powerful stimulator of Na+/K+-ATPase activity, significantly accelerated the recovery from the widened QRS complexes in the ECG, demonstrating a pronounced shift of extracellular potassium ions into the intracellular space. 相似文献

To treat household wastewater, a sequence of ‘primary decantation–trickling filter percolation’ was applied in a lab-scale designed treatment system. Poly-electrolyte was used as coagulant to enhance the primary treatment and charcoal was used as carrier material in the trickling filters. Oxygen was supplied to the trickling filters by means of natural ventilation. In the lab-scale system, the enhanced primary stage removed more than 91% of the suspended solids (SS), and 79% of the total chemical oxygen demand (CODt). The subsequent trickling filtration brought a complete nitrification to the wastewaters at a volumetric loading rate (Bv) of 0.7–1.0 g CODt L-1 d-1. On average, the concentrations of the CODt and SS in the final effluents were about 55 and 15 mg L-1 respectively. With respect to phosphate, physico-chemical removal was the dominant process. About 46–62% of total P was removed from the tested wastewaters. The integrated treatment system also achieved a fair degree of hygienisation. The numbers of total coliforms, fecal coliforms and fecal streptococci were decreased by 2–4 log units. The sludge production of the entire treatment system was about 1.7% (v/v) of the treated wastewater. Only primary sludge was produced; secondary sludge produced in the trickling filters was negligible. The cost savings in terms of minimization of sludge production and aeration energy are estimated to be substantial (i.e. some 50%) relative to a conventional activated sludge system. 相似文献

During the period from September 1988 to October 1989, 23 flights were carried out over the Dutch Continental Shelf of the North Sea and a total of 108 aerosol filter samples were collected. The samples were analyzed for Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br and Pb using both particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF). The results from PIXE exhibited better precision and lower detection limits than those from EDXRF. Therefore the further discussion and interpretation was based on the PIXE data only. It was observed that Si, S, V, Mn, Ni, Cu and Pb were enriched with respect to the earth's crust. It was seen that winds from the sector Southeast-South contributed most significantly to the total aerosol concentration. The vertical profiles of several elements indicated that their concentration increases with proximity to the sea. Principal factor analysis on the data matrix containing elemental concentrations, height and wind direction parameters allowed us to identify 6 possible aerosol sources, namely, a composite of CaSO4 and metallurgical activities, refuse incineration, residual oil combustion, quartz, soil dust and sea-salt aerosol. 相似文献

An adult male white eared-pheasant (Crossoptilon crossoptilon) at a Japanese zoo exhibited lethargy and emaciation. Microscopic examination of a blood smear revealed a haemosporidian parasitic infection. Based on the morphological characteristics and molecular analysis of the parasite, it was identified as Plasmodium (Bennettinia) juxtanucleare. This is the first report of P. juxtanucleare infection in bird species belonging to the genus Crossoptilon. Caution against avian malaria infection is required for the conservation of endangered bird species in zoos. 相似文献

Heartwoods of 22 African tropical wood species were extracted with methanol and the contents of total phenolic compounds in
these extracts were measured. Three bioassays were conducted to evaluate the antioxidant activity, tyrosinase inhibitory activity,
and antifungal activity of the methanol extracts. The results indicated that the extracts from 13 species exhibited high antioxidant
potential, and their inhibitory concentrations that caused 50% scavenging of the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical
(IC50) were less than 10 μg/ml. The crude extract from Cylicodiscus gabunensis showed the highest antioxidant activity, and was even higher than that of (+)-catechin, which is known as a potent antioxidant.
There was a good correlation between the antioxidant activity and the content of total phenolic compounds, indicating that
phenolic compounds played a predominant role in the antioxidant property of the wood extracts. Among all 22 species, only
1 species, Milicia excelsa, contained extractives that showed very high tyrosinase inhibitory activity. The extracts from 9 species showed high antifungal
activity. No consistent relationship was observed between the tyrosinase inhibitory activity or antifungal activity and the
content of total phenolics in the extracts.
