2500 years of European climate variability and human susceptibility   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Climate variations influenced the agricultural productivity, health risk, and conflict level of preindustrial societies. Discrimination between environmental and anthropogenic impacts on past civilizations, however, remains difficult because of the paucity of high-resolution paleoclimatic evidence. We present tree ring-based reconstructions of central European summer precipitation and temperature variability over the past 2500 years. Recent warming is unprecedented, but modern hydroclimatic variations may have at times been exceeded in magnitude and duration. Wet and warm summers occurred during periods of Roman and medieval prosperity. Increased climate variability from ~250 to 600 C.E. coincided with the demise of the western Roman Empire and the turmoil of the Migration Period. Such historical data may provide a basis for counteracting the recent political and fiscal reluctance to mitigate projected climate change.  相似文献

Some additional experiments checking out the extraction method recently developed for the determination of MeHg in biological samples by Headspace Gas Chromatography with Microwave Induced Plasma atomic emission spectroscopy detection were performed. In this method, the MeHg is cleaved from the biological tissue by H2SO4 and by addition of iodoacetic acid converted to the iodide form. These reaction steps take place in a closed headspace vial. The H2SO4 concentration and the sample matrix have an important influence on the recovery of the MeHg from the sample and these effects are discussed. The method was then applied to the determination of MeHg in cod fish caught in the North Sea. Levels found ranged from 0.13 to 0.63 μg g−1 dw with a mean of 0.33 μg g−1 on the 25 samples analyzed. The total Hg content of these samples was also determined by Cold Vapour Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, and all data pooled ranged from 0.19 to 0.90 μg g−1 with a mean of 0.40 μg g−1. A study of the ratio MeHg/total Hg revealed that MeHg always constituted more than 60 % of the total Hg level, with a mean of 83 % on the 25 samples. The percentage MeHg did not increase or decrease markedly when the total Hg content increased. It could be concluded that these North Sea samples are not much contaminated by Hg and are surely suitable for consumption.  相似文献

Two strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens, LMG 10141 and 10140, isolated from soil, cometabolised atrazine in water under hydrogenotrophic conditions. The degradation products were deethylatrazine and deisopropylatrazine while hydroxyatrazine was not detected in cultures of LMG 10141. Labelled experiments indicated that neither the alkyl chains nor the ring structure were completely mineralised.  相似文献

Gastrointestinal digestion is of major importance in the bioavailability of angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory peptides, bioactive peptides with possible antihypertensive effects. In this study, the conditions of in vitro gastrointestinal digestion leading to the formation and degradation of ACE inhibitory peptides were investigated for pea and whey protein. In batch experiments, the digestion simulating the physiological conditions sufficed to achieve the highest ACE inhibitory activity, with IC(50) values of 0.076 mg/mL for pea and 0.048 mg/mL for whey protein. The degree of proteolysis did not correlate with the ACE inhibitory activity and was always higher for pea than whey. In a semicontinuous model of gastrointestinal digestion, response surface methodology studied the influence of temperature and incubation time in both the stomach and small intestine phases on the ACE inhibitory activity and degree of proteolysis. For pea protein, a linear model for the degree of proteolysis and a quadratic model for the ACE inhibitory activity could be constituted. Within the model, a maximal degree of proteolysis was observed at the highest temperature and the longest incubation time in the small intestine phase, while maximal ACE inhibitory activity was obtained at the longest incubation times in the stomach and small intestine phase. These results show that ACE inhibitory activity of pea and whey hydrolysates can be controlled by the conditions of in vitro gastrointestinal digestion.  相似文献

Urine patches from cattle and sheep on pastures represent considerable, highly localized N applications. Subsequent nitrification and denitrification of the nitrogenous compounds may result in high nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Not much is known about the extent of these emissions, or about possible mitigation options. The aims of this study were to experimentally quantify the effects of urine composition, dung addition, compaction and soil moisture on N2O emissions from urine patches. For an incubation study at 16 °C, soil was collected from a typic Endoaquoll, and N2O production was monitored during a 103-day period. Emissions for the whole period averaged 0.3 and 0.9% of the applied urine-N for dry and moist soil, respectively. When compacted or when dung was added, emissions from moist soils increased to 4.9 and 7.9%, respectively. Both addition of dung and soil compaction resulted in a delay of the peak N2O emission of approximately 10-15 days. No significant effect of amount of urine-N on emission percentages was detected. Changing the volume of urine with equal amounts of urine-N resulted in highly significant effects, peaking with an emission of 2.3% at a water-filled pore space (WFPS) of 78%. When the soil was water-saturated, N2O production was delayed until evaporation had decreased moisture contents. We concluded that denitrification was the main N2O forming process in the incubation study. Emission factors for urine reported in the literature do not generally include the potentially considerable effects of compaction or combination with dung. We conclude that realistic emission factors should take into account such an effect, together with estimates for the occurrence of camping areas in pastures. From our results, the best mitigation strategies appear to be increasing the volume of urine through feed additives, and avoiding compaction and promoting more homogeneous application of N through a lower cattle stocking rate. Also, research efforts may be targeted at management practices to avoid camping areas in pastures.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of autologous serum (AS)-supplemented medium on the proliferation and differentiation into neurons of canine bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs). Canine BMSCs were cultured using α-MEM only, α-MEM with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS), and 5, 10 and 20% AS-supplemented α-MEM. Growth of canine BMSCs was observed in all AS groups. The proliferation capacity of canine BMSCs in the AS groups was similar to that in the FBS group. No significant differences between the FBS and AS groups were observed in the percentage of the cells that changed to the neuron-like morphology and neuron-specific enolase-positive ratio after neuronal differentiation. Canine BMSCs cultured using AS-supplemented medium were able to proliferate and showed neuronal differentiation potency.  相似文献

Experiments have been carried out to investigate the influence of artificial rainfall, applied during the growing season of lettuce in a glasshouse, and washing of the sample prior to analysis on the residue content of the crop treated with the systemic fungicides benomyl and thiophanate-methyl. The results show that if artificial rainfall is applied, treatment with a threefold dose of thiophanate-methyl, compared to benomyl, results in about the same residue content at harvest time. Applying artificial rainfall during the growing season leads to a residue level on the average 54.7% lower for benomyl and 60.2% for thiophanate-methyl compared to no sprinkling. If the sample is thoroughly rinsed with water prior to analysis the figures obtained are 34.6% with and 39.3% without artificial rainfall for benomyl and 56.9 and 71.3% respectively for thiophanate-methyl. The combined effect of both treatments is a residue content of 70.4 % less for benomyl and 88.8 % for thiophanate-methyl.  相似文献

The antimycotic N-substituted imidazoles and triazoles, such as imazalil, ketoconazole and itraconazole, interfere selectively at low concentrations (≥0.01nm) with the 14α-demethylase system (which is dependent on cytochrome P-450) of fungal cells, for example, Candida albicans and Penicillium italicum. This results in a decreased availability of ergosterol and the accumulation of 14α-methyl-sterols such as lanosterol. Cholesterol synthesis in a subcellular fraction of rat liver, in intact fibroblasts, and in vivo in rat liver, was much less sensitive, for example, to ketoconazole. The imidazole derivatives imazalil, miconazole, ketoconazole and parconazole, and the triazole derivatives propiconazole, terconazole and itraconazole affect the cytochrome P-450 species of microsomal fractions from Saccharomyces cerevisiae and rat liver. Cytochrome P-450 of rat-liver microsomes was much less sensitive to these azole derivatives, in parallel with the lower sensitivity of cholesterol synthesis. Using unilamellar vesicles composed of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidyl-ethanolamine and diphosphatidylcholine, multilamellar vesicles of dipalmitoylphos-phatidylcholine, and intact S. cerevisiae, it was shown that the substitution of ergosterol by lanosterol leads to functional changes in the membranes. It is speculated that the selective interaction of the azole derivatives with the yeast microsomal cytochrome P-450 leads to the accumulation of 14a-methyl-sterols and results in changes in the permeability of the membranes and leakages. The observed inhibition of growth may have its origin in these changes. Miconazole, ketoconazole and deacylated ketoconazole (R-39519) also affect the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, miconazole being 12.5 and 14 times, respectively, more active than R-39519 and ketoconazole. The greater antibacterial activity of miconazole coincides with its greater inhibition of the biosynthesis of C-55 isoprenoid alcohol and vitamin K. The phosphorylated derivative of C-55 isoprenoid alcohol has functional importance in the biosynthesis of bacterial cell wall and membrane polymers, and the menaquinone vitamin K plays a role in the electron transport of Gram-positive bacteria. The reduced synthesis of these vital compounds may contribute to the antibacterial activity of miconazole.  相似文献

Antibodies to Ehrlichia canis, Ehrlichia platys, and spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae were detected by indirect immunofluorescence in sera from 27 ill individually owned thrombocytopenic dogs (platelet concentrations less than 200,000 platelets/microliters) and 59 healthy kenneled dogs located in southern Louisiana. Platelet concentrations less than 100,000 platelets/microliters were detected in 63% of ill thrombocytopenic dogs and 6.8% of healthy kennel dogs. One ill thrombocytopenic dog had intracytoplasmic E platys morulae detected within platelets. The prevalence of increased serum antibody titers to E canis and E platys was 25.9% and 40.7% for the ill thrombocytopenic dogs and 20.3% and 54.2% for the healthy kennel dogs, respectively. All dogs with seropositivity to E canis had increased antibody titers of greater than or equal to 1:100 to E platys. Simultaneous examination of increased serum antibody titers (greater than or equal to 1:64) to four SFG rickettsiae indicate that Rickettsia rhipicephali and Rickettsia montana accounted for the majority of the antibodies detected in these dogs. Of 86 dogs tested, 44.2% were seronegative to E canis, E platys, and SFG rickettsiae.  相似文献
