Nine laboratories analyzed samples of whole grain, intermediate, and ready-to-eat products for ethylene dibromide (EDB) residues. Supplied samples of wheat, rice, and flour contained both fortified and incurred EDB; corn bread mix, baby cereal, and bread contained only fortified EDB. The whole grains and intermediates were analyzed by the same basic procedural steps as in the official method for multifumigants: They were extracted by soaking in acetone-water (5 + 1). The baby cereal and bread were analyzed by a modification of the Rains and Holder hexane co-distillation procedure. EDB was determined by electron capture gas chromatography operated with an SP-1000 column. All products contained 3 different levels of EDB and were analyzed as blind duplicates. Overall mean recoveries ranged from 85.2% for 69.6 ppb to 105.0% for 4.35 ppb, both in baby cereal. Interlaboratory relative standard deviations ranged from 5.7% for 869 ppb in wheat to 20.2% for 69.6 ppb in baby cereal, both fortified. Mean levels of incurred EDB in wheat, rice, and flour were 926.7, 982.0, and 49.9 ppb, respectively; corresponding relative standard deviations were 9.9, 7.7, and 13.1%. Inbreeding depression constitutes a significant threat to the viability of small populations. In addition to small size and isolation of populations, short distance dispersal may elevate risk of inbreeding, but empirical evidence is scarce. Inbreeding depression has been demonstrated in the highly endangered red-cockaded woodpecker Picoides borealis. It has been suggested that conservation efforts to support extant populations should aim at spatially aggregating territories to enhance dispersal success. This however may aggravate inbreeding risk because distance between territories and hence dispersal distances become short. We analysed empirical data from a long-term study of the demography of the red-cockaded woodpecker and found that inbreeding risk varied inversely with natal dispersal distance of the mother. Using an individual-based, spatially explicit population model that incorporates simulations of environmental and demographic stochasticity and an empirically derived, species-specific estimate of inbreeding costs, we demonstrated that inbreeding depression significantly elevated extinction risk in this species. On the other hand, even though dispersal distances in populations with spatially aggregated territories were shorter and the proportion of inbred individuals was higher than in other populations of the same size, such populations were still more persistent. Despite the overall adverse effect of inbreeding depression on viability of red-cockaded woodpecker populations, lowering interterritorial distances can be viewed as a valuable conservation tool. Given the small size and isolated location of most extant red-cockaded woodpecker populations however, our findings suggest that inbreeding depression represents a significant threat to the survival of this species.  相似文献

The polyamine analogue, keto-putrescine, was shown to provide substantial control of infections by six economically important plant pathogens, with EC50 values ranging between 57 and 82 mg litre?1. However, keto-putrescine was relatively less effective in vitro against Phytophthora infestans, Pyricularia oryzae and Pyrenophora avenae, with EC50 values ranging from 145 to 340 mg litre?1. In contrast, the polyamine analogue N-acetylputrescine had to effect on in-vitro growth of P. avenae or P. oryzae or infection of barley seedlings with powdery mildew. When P. avenae was grown in the presence of keto-putrescine, there were small, insignificant reductions in ornithine decarboxylase activity, with more substantial, significant reductions in S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase activity. These changes were accompanied by a 43% reduction in spermidine concentration and increased concentrations of spermine and cadaverine.  相似文献

1. Some effects of removing increasing proportions of the left caecum on the remaining caecal tissue and on the right caecum were studied in young chicks during a period of 35 d. The chicks were 22 d old when the operations were carried out.

2. No differences were detected between the gains in weight of the control and experimental groups of birds.

3. A marked negative linear relationship was observed between the dry weight of the amount of caecal tissue removed when the birds were 22 d old and the weight of the left caecum at the end of the experiment.

4. The average growth rate of the left caecum (g dry tissue/week) was found to be dependent on the estimated weight of caecal tissue remaining after surgery.

5. No evidence was obtained to indicate that the growth of the right caecum responded to the removal of the left caecal tissue.

6. The morphology and histology of the operated caeca were found to be similar to the equivalent regions of the unoperated caeca. Surgical interference was not followed by any major changes in mucosal architecture.
