Genetic relationship of litter traits between farrowing and weaning in Landrace and Large White pigs

We estimated genetic parameters in Landrace and Large White pig populations for litter traits at farrowing (total number born, number born alive, number stillborn, total litter weight at birth (LWB), and mean litter weight at birth) and those at weaning (litter size at weaning (LSW), total litter weight at weaning (LWW), mean litter weight at weaning (MWW), and survival rate from farrowing to weaning). We analyzed 65,579 records at farrowing and 6,306 at weaning for Landrace, and 52,557 and 5,360, respectively, for Large White. Single‐trait and two‐trait repeatability animal models were exploited to estimate heritability and genetic correlation respectively. Heritability estimates of LSW were 0.09 for Landrace and 0.08 for Large White. Genetic correlations of LSW with MWW were –0.43 for Landrace and –0.24 for Large White. Genetic correlations of LSW with LWW and LWB ranged from 0.5 to 0.6. The genetic correlation of MWW with LWW was positive, but that with LWB was negligible. The results indicate that utilizing LWW or LWB could improve LSW efficiently, despite the antagonistic genetic correlation between LSW and MWW. 相似文献

Natural forest recovery on abandoned farmland is hindered by a variety of factors and active restoration plays an important role when quick afforestation is desired. We investigated seedling survival of four transplanted native tree species (Quercus myrsinifolia, Quercus serrata, Aphananthe aspera, and Rhus sylvestris) by experimentally manipulating the vegetation cover, which was mainly dominated by dwarf bamboo (Pleioblastus chino), and herbivore access to the planting sites on farmland that had been abandoned for 15 years at the start of the study. Few transplanted seedlings of any species survived under intact vegetation cover, irrespective of herbivore presence. In gaps in the vegetation cover, winter browsing by Japanese hare (Lepus brachyurus) damaged all species. However, lower browsing frequency and higher resprouting ability after grazing of the seedlings enabled both Quercus species to survive better than the other species. These results indicate that dwarf bamboo and the hare jointly limit the establishment of native trees in old fields. If active afforestation by transplanting seedlings at sites dominated by dwarf bamboo is planned, a combination of vegetation removal, selection of suitable species, and temporary seedling protection will be most effective. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Heat shock has been used to inhibit cleavage for the induction of monogenic diploids or tetraploids in animals, but usually the success rate is low. Heat-shocked rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss embryos were used in this histological study to clarify the causes of this low success rate. Embryos treated with hydrostatic pressure were used for comparison. After heat shock had disorganized the spindles, polypolar (tripolar or tetrapolar) spindles in addition to bipolar spindles were often reassembled soon after treatment. The embryos then completed tripolar or tetrapolar division at the first mitosis, and directly turned into three- or four-cell embryos as a result of the first cleavage. During the second mitosis, a monopolar spindle was formed in each blastomere of four-cell embryos and approximately 60% of three-cell embryos. In the remaining three-cell embryos, two of the three blastomeres formed a monopolar spindle, and the third one formed a bipolar spindle. The formation of polypoles is assumed to be caused by insufficient disorganization of daughter centrioles and splitting from the mother centriole by heat shock. Polypolar division is considered to be the cause of aneuploidy and the low success rate of chromosome set doubling. This study was conducted to investigate the developmental capacity of domestic cat-bovine reconstructed embryos via interspecies somatic cell nuclear transfer (iSCNT) and to observe the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content of the iSCNT embryos. The iSCNT embryos were generated using mixed-breed domestic cat fibroblasts as donor cells and enucleated bovine oocytes as the recipient cytoplasm. When the developmental capacities of iSCNT embryos and parthenogenic bovine embryos were compared, there was no difference (P>0.05) in the rates of cleavage and development to the 8-cell stage (86.6 vs. 84.0% and 32.2 vs. 36.2%, respectively). However, in contrast to development of parthenogenic embryos to the morula and blastocyst stages, no iSCNT embryos (0/202) developed beyond the 8-cell stage. For mtDNA analysis, iSCNT embryos at the 1-cell, 2-cell, 4-cell and 8-cell stages were randomly selected. Both cat and bovine mtDNA quantification analysis were performed using quantitative PCR. The levels of both cat and bovine mtDNA in cat-bovine iSCNT embryos varied at each stage of development. The cat mtDNA concentration in the iSCNT embryos was stable from the 1-cell to 8-cell stages. The bovine mtDNA in the iSCNT embryos at the 8-cell stage was significantly lower than that at the 4-cell stage (P<0.05). No difference in the proportions of cat mtDNA in the iSCNT embryos was found in any of the observed developmental stages (1- through 8-cell stages). In conclusion, bovine cytoplasm supports domestic cat nucleus development through the 8-cell stage. The mtDNA genotype of domestic cat-bovine iSCNT embryos illustrates persistence of heteroplasmy, and the reduction in mtDNA content might reflect a developmental block at the 8-cell stage. 相似文献

In dogs, pancreatic acinar cell injury is thought to be caused by decreased pancreatic blood flow due to heart failure. In previous our report, it demonstrated that decreased heart function causes a significant decrease in pancreatic blood flow in heart failure dog model caused by rapid ventricular pacing (RVP). However, the types of histopathological changes remain unclear. We aimed to verify the types of histopathological changes occurring in the pancreatic tissue due to decreased heart function. After RVP for 4 weeks, atrophy of pancreatic acinar cells, characterized by a decrease in zymogen granules, was observed in all areas of the pancreas. In conclusion, the result of this study suggests that attention should be paid to ischemia/hypoperfusion injury in the pancreas. 相似文献

Controlled self-assembly of a trinitrofluorenone-appended gemini-shaped amphiphilic hexabenzocoronene selectively formed nanotubes or microfibers with different photochemical properties. In these nanotubes, which are 16 nanometers in diameter and several micrometers long, a molecular layer of electron-accepting trinitrofluorenone laminates an electron-donating graphitic layer of pi-stacked hexabenzocoronene. The coaxial nanotubular structure allows photochemical generation of spatially separated charge carriers and a quick photoconductive response with a large on/off ratio greater than 10(4). A serological survey of hepatitis E virus (HEV) antibody was conducted using 202 adult captive cynomolgus monkeys, who did not show any clinical signs of acute hepatitis. Out of these, 44 monkeys were sero-positive for anti-HEV IgG and all monkeys were negative for anti-HEV IgM. All positive monkeys came from either Vietnam or China, but none from the Philippines, Indonesia, or our facility. Selected 12 monkeys out of positive monkeys from Vietnam, including 9 positive and 3 negative, revealed mostly within the reference ranges for alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and asparatate aminotransferase (AST) by serum biochemistries. Their titers of anti-HEV IgG did not correlate with the concentrations of ALT and AST. Moreover, HEV-RNA could not be detected from any fecal specimens of the 12 monkeys. Thus, monkeys with anti-HEV IgG sero-positive did not seem to be source of the HEV-pollution, because 1) sero-positive monkeys did not excrete HEV-RNA from their feces, and 2) monkeys from the Philippines and Indonesia have remained to be sero-negative for anti-HEV IgG, even if the monkeys were kept in same animal room of our facility. From these results, it could be inferred that primary infection of HEV occurred in the exported countries, but not in our colony. The contamination of HEV in indoor-captive monkeys could be prevented by precise quarantine tests, including ELISA for detecting anti-HEV and RT-PCR for HEV RNA. 相似文献
