OBJECTIVE: To determine diagnostic features and efficacy of treatment of arthrosis of the cervical articular facet joints between C2 and C3 in Scottish Deerhounds. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 9 client-owned dogs. PROCEDURE: Medical records of affected dogs were reviewed. Diagnosis was confirmed by results of clinical examination (signs of severe pain from unilateral or bilateral flexion of the cervical vertebral column), radiography, myelography, and computed tomography. Treatment consisted of fluoroscopy-guided intra-articular injection of corticosteroids and lidocaine. RESULTS: Unilateral or bilateral arthrosis of the cervical facet joints between C2 and C3 was detected in all dogs. In 7 dogs, signs of pain were elicited by flexion of the side of the neck in which affected joints were detected radiographically. Two dogs had signs of pain during right lateral flexion, although bilateral lesions were detected. Five dogs had unilateral lesions, and 4 dogs had bilateral lesions; sclerosis and hypertrophy of the articular process were common. Two dogs had bridging of the articular space. Use of computed tomography confirmed the diagnosis. Myelography did not reveal abnormalities of the spinal cord or canal. After treatment, 8 dogs had rapid marked improvement of clinical signs, and 7 dogs remained free of clinical signs for > 4 months. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Arthrosis of the cervical facet joints in Scottish Deerhounds is a severely painful condition for which conventional radiography is a useful screening test. Denervation of the canine hip joint capsule is described as a surgical therapy method in the treatment of canine hip joint dysplasia and arthrosis. The goal of this operation is a removal of the pain immediately and a reactivation of the dynamic active component of the hip joint in moving the body forward. Simple removal of the periosteum of the craniolateral acetabulum edge destroys the rami articulares of the cranial glutaeal nerve and the rami articulares dorsalis of the sciatic nerve. Within 10 years now we performed the denervation of the canine hip joint capsule. Evaluation of the post operative clinical course in 269 cases revealed an impressive improvement of lameness due to pain relief in almost 92% of the cases. 相似文献

Pathotype-specific and broad-spectrum resistance to turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) have been identified in the diploid A genome brassica species Brassica rapa. The pathotype-specific resistance is effective against pathotype 1 isolates of TuMV, which are the most common in Europe. It is almost identical in its specificity to that of a mapped resistance gene (TuRB01) present in the A genome of the amphidiploid species Brassica napus. A mutant of a pathotype 1 isolate of TuMV (UK 1M) that is able to overcome TuRB01 also overcame the B. rapa resistance. This, combined with the fact that a single-nucleotide mutation in the cylindrical inclusion gene of TuMV that has been shown to induce a change from avirulence to virulence against TuRB01, had an identical effect on the B. rapa resistance, suggest that the two resistances are conditioned by the same gene. A second source of resistance in B. rapa prevented systemic spread of all TuMV isolates tested. A third source of resistance that appears to provide immunity to, or severely restrict replication of most isolates of TuMV has been characterised. This resistance source also prevented systemic spread of all TuMV isolates tested. Prior to this study, no resistance to pathotype 4 or pathotype 12 isolates of TuMV had ever been identified. For each of these three resistance sources, plant lines that are not segregating for some of the resistance phenotypes and that are presumably homozygous for the genes controlling these phenotypes have been generated. Strategies for further characterising and deploying these resistances in different Brassica species are described. 相似文献

The aetiology of porcine post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) is poorly understood. Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) is an essential component of the experimental disease model for PMWS: however, evidence from experimental and field studies indicates that additional factors play a critical role in the aetiopathogenesis of PMWS. Current candidates include (1) immune stimulation (for example, via co-infection or vaccination), and (2) a novel infectious agent. A prospective, longitudinal case-control study was designed to investigate molecular triggers in leucocytes of neonatal piglets that may predispose to the development of PMWS. Blood samples were collected weekly from pigs (n=125) within five farms, from 1 week to 8 weeks of age: that is, before the appearance of clinical signs. Four colour flow cytometry was used to investigate changes in subsets of peripheral blood mononuclear cells, using monoclonal antibodies against the following cell associated markers; sIgG, CD3, MHCII dR, CD14, CD4a, CD8a, CD45RC, CD25, SWC3a, SWC8, CD163 and CD45. Sampling and laboratory analysis was supported by monitoring of clinical signs from 1 week to 20 weeks of age, or until disease supervened. At the conclusion of the study, 68 pigs (54%) were classified in Group 1 (no signs of clinical disease), 34 pigs (27%) in Group 2 (signs of clinical disease but not characteristic of PMWS), 17 pigs (14%) in Group 3 (suspect PMWS case) and 5 pigs (4%) in Group 4 (PMWS case). A single case of Porcine Dermatitis and Nephropathy syndrome (PDNS) was also diagnosed. Significant changes with age were demonstrated in clinically normal, neonatal pigs (Group 1), including an increase in B-cells and T-cells, and an increase in the proportion of total T-cells expressing MHCII. Within the T-cell subset, the proportion of CD8(+high) CD4(-) T-cells increased, in addition to the proportion of CD4(+) T-cells co-expressing CD8. Of the factors recorded, farm was found to have a highly significant effect on immune system development in the neonate. Comparison of Groups 1 and 4 cases identified significant differences between pigs which remained normal and those which subsequently developed PMWS. Pigs which went on to develop PMWS had a greater proportion of T-cells expressing MHCII in early life, higher mean intensity of expression of MHCII on T-cells, higher mean intensity of expression of MHCII on B cells and higher expression of CD25 on CD45RC(-) T-cells. There are several hurdles to ensure sustainable seed production and consistent flow of improved legume varieties in sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA) and South Asia (SA). The unreliable demand, autogamous nature of most of the grain legumes, and slow variety replacement rate by smallholder farmers do not provide strong incentive for private seed companies to invest in legume seed business. Unless a well thought‐out and comprehensive approach to legume seed delivery is developed, current seed shortages will continue, eroding emerging market opportunities. The experiences reported here are collated through a 10‐year partnership project, the Tropical Legumes in SSA and SA. It fostered innovative public–private partnerships in joint testing of innovative market‐led seed systems, skills and knowledge enhancement, de‐risking private sector initiatives that introduced in new approaches and previously overlooked entities in technology delivery. As new public and private seed companies, individual seed entrepreneurs and farmer organizations emerged, the existing ones enhanced their capacities. This resulted in significant rise in production, availability and accessibility of various seed grades of newly improved and farmer demanded legume varieties in the target countries. 相似文献

Phylum Cnidaria has been an excellent source of natural products, with thousands of metabolites identified. Many of these have not been screened in bioassays. The aim of this study was to explore the potential of 5600 Cnidaria natural products (after excluding those known to derive from microbial symbionts), using a systematic approach based on chemical space, drug-likeness, predicted toxicity, and virtual screens. Previous drug-likeness measures: the rule-of-five, quantitative estimate of drug-likeness (QED), and relative drug likelihoods (RDL) are based on a relatively small number of molecular properties. We augmented this approach using reference drug and toxin data sets defined for 51 predicted molecular properties. Cnidaria natural products overlap with drugs and toxins in this chemical space, although a multivariate test suggests that there are some differences between the groups. In terms of the established drug-likeness measures, Cnidaria natural products have generally lower QED and RDL scores than drugs, with a higher prevalence of metabolites that exceed at least one rule-of-five threshold. An index of drug-likeness that includes predicted toxicity (ADMET-score), however, found that Cnidaria natural products were more favourable than drugs. A measure of the distance of individual Cnidaria natural products to the centre of the drug distribution in multivariate chemical space was related to RDL, ADMET-score, and the number of rule-of-five exceptions. This multivariate similarity measure was negatively correlated with the QED score for the same metabolite, suggesting that the different approaches capture different aspects of the drug-likeness of individual metabolites. The contrasting of different drug similarity measures can help summarise the range of drug potential in the Cnidaria natural product data set. The most favourable metabolites were around 210–265 Da, quite often sesquiterpenes, with a moderate degree of complexity. Virtual screening against cancer-relevant targets found wide evidence of affinities, with Glide scores <−7 in 19% of the Cnidaria natural products. 相似文献
