The study of the genetics of resistance in pepper to the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora capsici has been complicated due to a lack of use of a common set of pathogen isolates and host genotypes. We have developed a differential series for this system using eleven pepper genotypes and thirty-four isolates of the pathogen from California, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Turkey. Through differential patterns of virulence of the isolates on the hosts, we identified fourteen different physiological races of P. capsici. There appears to be no restriction of races to particular geographical locations. Isolate mating types were also determined, and both mating types were found in one field in California. The significance of the characterization of physiological races and existence of both mating types in the field to pepper growers and breeders is discussed.  相似文献

One-hundred and sixty-seven accessions belonging to 13 wild Oryza species were screened against the bacterial leaf blight (BB) pathogen (Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryza) in Punjab, India. Nine species were identified as carrying resistant genes against the four most prevalent pathotypes under conditions in Punjab. These included O. barthii (eight accessions), O. longistaminata (five accessions), O. meridionalis (three accessions), O. nivara (five accessions), O. rufipogen (two accessions), and one accession each from O. punctata, O. minuta, O. malampuzhaensis and O. latifolia. This is the first report showing the availability of BB resistance in two species namely, O. meridionalis and O. punctata. The resistant accessions, especially those with a similar genome (AA) could potentially be used for the transfer of BB resistance to well-adapted high-yielding rice cultivars.  相似文献

Summary Inheritance of resistance to the Punjab isolate of Xanthomonas campestris pv. oryzae of bacterial blight disease of rice was studied in seven breeding lines resistant to the disease. The results revealed that resistance in breeding lines PAU 122-73-1-4-1, PAU 164-102-1-2-1-1-1, KJT 24, IR 5657-33-2-1-2 and IR 22082-41-2-2 was controlled by single dominant genes allelic to the dominant gene which confers resistance to the Punjab isolate in Patong 32. Resistance to the Punjab isolate in breeding lines IET 7172 and RP 2151-40-1 was found to be controlled by single recessive resistance genes allelic to one of the recessive resistance genes present in BJ 1. The two genes are independently inherited and are being used to develop bacterial blight resistant varieties.  相似文献

Summary Correlation and path coefficients were calculated for seed yield per plant and its components from 36 clones comprising 8 parental and their 28 single cross clones in Guinea grass (Panicum maximum Jacq.) from data pooled over two years. Seed yield per plant showed significant positive correlation coefficients with branch number per panicle, panicle number per plant, panicle length, branch length, 100 seed weight and day to flower. Path coefficients analysis revealed that panicle number per plant had highest direct effect on seed yield per plant, followed by branch number per panicle, days to flower and 100 seed weight.  相似文献

Cells reuse signaling proteins in multiple pathways, raising the potential for improper cross talk. Scaffold proteins are thought to insulate against such miscommunication by sequestering proteins into distinct physical complexes. We show that the scaffold protein Ste5, which organizes the yeast mating mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway, does not use sequestration to prevent misactivation of the mating response. Instead, Ste5 appears to use a conformation mechanism: Under basal conditions, an intramolecular interaction of the pleckstrin homology (PH) domain with the von Willebrand type A (VWA) domain blocks the ability to coactivate the mating-specific MAPK Fus3. Pheromone-induced membrane binding of Ste5 triggers release of this autoinhibition. Thus, in addition to serving as a conduit guiding kinase communication, Ste5 directly receives input information to decide if and when signal can be transmitted to mating output.  相似文献

Abstract. The effects of rice-straw management (incorporation, burning or removal) on soil organic carbon content and physical and hydraulic properties were determined after five years of rice–wheat cropping in a sandy loam soil in northwest India. Soil organic carbon content was greater with straw incorporation and straw burning than with straw removal, and aggregation status, total porosity, pore-size distribution, bulk density, dispersion ratio and soil strength were correspondingly improved. The treatment effects were confined mainly to the 0–5 cm depth. Water retention was less with straw burning than straw removal, owing to increased water repellency of the soil surfaces. Cumulative infiltration and its rate after five hours were greater with straw incorporation than straw burning or removal. Air entry values were unaffected by straw management; however, the values were greater after rice harvest than after wheat harvest.  相似文献

A study was conducted from 1996 to 2001 on well drained sandy loam soils in the central plain region of Punjab to determine the effect of initial size of planting stock and clones of poplar (Populus deltoides) on their height, diameter and volume growth. Two categories of planting stock viz. large size (height >4.7 m and collar diameter >4.2 cm) and small size (height 2.5–4.3 m and collar diameter 2.5–4.0 cm) of ten poplar clones were used for the experiment using a completely randomized design with single tree plots and ten replications. The large sized stock attained significantly greater diameter and volume growth at all ages than those of small size, whereas, the superiority of the former in plant height was only up to 3 years of age. The respective differences for diameter and volume between the stock sizes decreased from 11.7 and 27.96% at 3 years to 4.9 and 11.42% at 5 years of age. Significant differences were observed among clones for all the growth parameters. Clones G-48, 3167, WSL-31 and WSL-38 exhibited the highest growth.  相似文献

Fungi produce low molecular weight secondary metabolites such as antibiotics and mycotoxins. Antibiotics cure diseases whereas mycotoxins cause diseases in plants, animals and human beings. Species such as Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium and Stachybotrys are known to produce mycotoxins that accumulate in processed foods and feeds, although the incidence of infection occurs before processing, during the active growth of the organism. Among the mycotoxins, aflatoxins produced by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus have been extensively studied at the molecular level. A complex biosynthetic pathway involving sixteen steps is mediated by individual major genes. These fungi have eight linkage groups, but the aflatoxin/sterigmatocystin (AF/ST) metabolic pathway genes have been mapped to only three linkage groups; ten of them belong to linkage group VII, and one of each to linkage group II and VIII. These genes are involved in both the regulatory and biosynthetic pathways and are clustered on the respective chromosomes. Clustering of genes in fungi indicates an evolutionary trend among genes that orchestrate gene function. Being linked together they segregate as a unit, thereby conferring a selective advantage to the organism. The evolution of gene clusters takes place through vertical or horizontal gene transfer. In fungi, horizontal gene transfer is most effective. Functionally, the mechanism of evolution of mycotoxin gene clusters in fungi seems to be similar to the evolution of a super-gene. The possible implications of evolutionary parallelism of gene clusters and super-genes is briefly explored.  相似文献
