Riley encased methodology (REM) was developed for the purpose of establishing mangroves along highenergy shorelines, revetments, and bulkheads where natural recruitment no longer occurs and where conventional planting methods are ineffective. The principles of REM include the processes of individual seedling isolation within tubular encasements and adaptation of the juvenile plant to the external environment of the restoration site. The success of REM results from specifications for encasement preparation, propagule or seedling selection, and positioning of both encasements and seedlings according to elevation and tidal regimes. 相似文献

Leptospirosis is an exacerbating factor responsible for the drastic decline of sloth bear population in India. In this study, a multipronged approach based on antigen detection using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) employing G1/G2 and LigBF/LigBR primers, antibody detection using Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) and recombinant LigBCon1-5 antigen based Latex Agglutination Test (rLigBCon1-5 LAT), serum biochemistry using hepatic (serum glutamate oxalo acetic transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamate pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) and renal biomarkers (blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and Creatinine) and gross/histopathological evidence in liver and kidneys were employed to investigate leptospirosis in captive sloth bears. A total of 133 serum samples collected from Agra (n=113) and Bannerghatta (n=20) sloth bear rescue centers were screened using MAT and rLigBCon1-5 LAT. A total of 87 and 78 sera tested positive by MAT and LAT respectively. Pyrogenes was the leading serovar obtained using MAT followed by Icterohaemorrhagiae, Javanica, Grippotyphosa, Canicola and Tarassovi. The relative sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of rLigBCon1-5 LAT in comparison to MAT were 89.66%, 100% and 93.23% respectively. PCR performed on hepatic and renal tissues showed amplicon of 285 and 219 base pairs for G1/G2 and LigBF/LigBR primers respectively. Gross evidence (icteric liver, severely engorged hepatic sinusoids, congested kidneys with necrotic white spots on sub capsular surface), histopathology (severe hepatic degeneration and tubulointerstitial nephritis) and elevated hepatic/renal biomarkers were suggestive of leptospirosis. The advent of modern forces and the changes in socioeconomic patterns of forest dwellers have increased the pressures on the forests. In order to mitigate such pressures and also to protect the forests and wildlife the model of protected areas networks has shifted and enhanced such pressures in the unprotected natural forests due to several reasons. Being a low profile category of protected status and continuous human settlements, the present study highlights the case of dry deciduous forests of Sarguja district of Chhattisgarh state of India. The major objectives of this study were to quantify the status of forests and wildlife and also to determine the extent of anthropogenic disturbances faced by the dry deciduous forests of central India. Transect and silent drive count methods were used for sampling wildlife and quadrat method was used for sampling vegetation. Besides, the local uses of various forest produces were also studied in view of understanding the people dependency on forests. The forest vegetation, in the study area, was pre-dominated by Shorea robusta, which had Madhuca indica, Diospyrus melanoxylon and Buchnania lanzan as the major companion species. The forest had either the high girth class mature tree species or the saplings. The low vegetation cover and density were due to the high anthropogenic pressures mainly in the form of heavy livestock grazing and collection of ethnobotanically important species. The study though reveals that the area is not rich in wildlife and the forest is fragmented, the area still supports some important species, which include many rare and endangered plants and animals. The findings of this study have been discussed in view of the management and conservation of the forest and wildlife in the dry deciduous forests. 相似文献

Polyamines, putrescine, spermidine and spermine all at three concentrations viz., 0.2, 0.4 and 1.0 mM were tested, by supplementing to MS basal+4.44 μm BAP medium. The explant used was fractionated plb. Ethylene and methane was measured at 20 and 40 days after inoculation (DAI). Among various polyamines tested, maximum number of plb’s (protocorm-like bodies) were produced in putrescine 0.4 mM treatment. Increase (1.0 mM) or decrease (0.2 mM) in concentration caused a decrease in the production of plb’s. All spermidine and spermine treatments resulted in the production of less number of plb’s than control. No ethylene evolution was observed in any of the polyamine treatments. However, methane evolution was observed in all the polyamine treatments. The absolute amounts, of methane evolved could not be related to the observed plb’s production response. However, when the evolution of methane was more than 1 nmol per gram FW h−1, poor plb’s production was observed. 相似文献

The entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema carpocapsae, was evaluated for control of the potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella, under laboratory conditions. We evaluated different concentrations of S. carpocapsae for control of 2 nd, 3 rd, and 4 th instar P. operculella. The median lethal concentration(LC50) of S. carpocapsae infective juveniles(IJs) to 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th instar larvae of P. operculella was 200, 363, 181 IJs mL–1, respectively. With the extension of treatment time, the cumulative mortality increased for 2 nd, 3 rd, and 4 th instar larvae and pupae of P. operculella. Fourth instars were the most susceptible for all observation periods. Therefore, our results suggest that S. carpocapsae could be an effective biological control agent for P. operculella. 相似文献

Generalized reduction of nociception and conscious and unconscious proprioception were found in an approximately eight-year-old, male, Maltese mixed-breed dog presented for difficulty prehending food and experiencing ataxia of three months duration. Results of needle electromyogram, motor nerve conduction velocity, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis were normal. A diagnosis of sensory polyneuropathy was suspected. No underlying cause could be determined. Neurological signs progressed to quadriparesis over the following four months despite treatment attempts with prednisone and procarbazine.
