A pot culture experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of amorphous iron-(hydr)oxide (Am-FeOH) amendments on arsenic (As) availability and its uptake by rice ( Oryza sativa L. cv. BR28) irrigated with As-contaminated water. A rhizobag system was established using 3.5 L plastic pots, each containing one central compartment for plant growth, a middle compartment and an outside compartment. Three levels of laboratory-synthesized Am-FeOH (0, 0.1 and 0.5% w/w) were used to amend samples of the As-free sandy loam paddy soil placed into each compartment of the rhizobag system. The soils were submerged with a solution containing 5 mg L−1 As(V). Two-week-old rice seedlings were planted in the central compartments and cultured for 9 weeks under greenhouse conditions. The addition of 0.1% Am-FeOH to the soil irrigated with As-contaminated water improved plant growth, reduced the As concentration in the plants and enhanced Fe-plaque formation on the root surfaces. Analysis of soil solution samples collected during the experiment revealed higher pH levels and lower redox potentials in the soils amended with Am-FeOH at the onset of soil submergence, but later the soil solution collected from the 0.1% Am-FeOH treatment was slightly acidic and more oxidized than the solution from the 0% treatment. This indicated active functioning of the roots in the soil treated with 0.1% Am-FeOH. The concentrations of As(III) in the soil solution collected from the central compartment were significantly reduced by the Am-FeOH amendments, whereas in the soil treated with 0% Fe, As(III) accumulated in the rhizosphere, particularly during the late-cultivation period. The improvement in plant growth and reduction in As uptake by plants growing in the Am-FeOH treated soil could be attributed to the reduction of available As in the soil solution, mainly as a result of the binding of As to the Fe-plaque on the root surfaces.  相似文献

Thirty isolates of Fusarium oxysporum from wilted Welsh onion plants were examined for their diversity in nucleotide sequences of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA) intergenic spacer (IGS) region and for pathogenicity with regard to five Welsh onion cultivars. Phylogenetic analysis based on the IGS sequences revealed polyphyletic origins of the isolates and a relationship between phylogeny and pathogenicity; low virulence isolates differed genetically from those with high and moderate virulence. Mating type analysis revealed that all F. oxysporum isolates were MAT1-1 idiomorphs, suggesting that the pathogens may be clonal in the fields examined.  相似文献

Thirty-two isolates of Fusarium species were obtained from wilted Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum) grown on nine farms from six regions in Japan and identified as F. oxysporum (18 isolates), F. verticillioides (7 isolates), and F. solani (7 isolates). The pathogenicity of 32 isolates was tested on five commercial cultivars of Welsh onion and two cultivars of bulb onion in a seedling assay in a greenhouse. The Fusarium isolates varied in the degree of disease severity on the cultivars. Five F. oxysporum isolates (08, 15, 17, 22, and 30) had a higher virulence on the cultivars than the other isolates. The host range of these five isolates was limited to Allium species. Molecular characterization of Fusarium isolates was performed using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of ribosomal DNA. The 32 isolates were grouped into eight types (four types for F. oxysporum, one for F. verticillioides, and three for F. solani). Restriction patterns of the ITS region were not related to pathogenicity. However, the haplotypes obtained with five enzymes (RsaI, HinfI, HaeIII, ScrFI, and MspI) and the phylogenetic analysis permitted the discernment of the three Fusarium species. The PCR-RFLP analysis should provide a rapid, simple method for differentiating Fusaruim species isolated from wilted Welsh onion in Japan.  相似文献

Our examination of the neon flying squid (Ommastrephes bartramii) winter–spring cohort catch per unit effort (CPUE, an index of stock) revealed significant positive correlations with the interannual variations of observed chlorophyll‐a (Chl‐a) concentration and autumn–winter mixed layer depth (MLD) in the winter–spring feeding grounds of paralarvae and juveniles (130–170°E, 20–27°N). These correlations suggest the importance of integrated bottom‐up effects by the autumn–winter MLD for the neon flying squid stocks. However, the influence of autumn–winter MLD interannual variation in the forage availability for paralarvae and juveniles, i.e., particulate organic matter and zooplankton, has still been unclear. In this study, we use the lower trophic ecosystem model NEMURO, which uses the physical environmental data from the ocean reanalysis dataset obtained by the four‐dimensional variational (4DVAR) data assimilation method. The model‐based investigation enables us to clarify how the autumn–winter MLD controls the particulate organic matter and zooplankton abundance in the feeding grounds. Further, our investigation of the autumn–winter MLD interannual variation demonstrates that the stronger autumn wind in the feeding grounds develops a deeper mixed layer. Therefore, the deep mixed layer entrains nutrient‐rich water and enhances photosynthesis, which results in good feeding conditions for paralarvae and juveniles. Our results underline that the wind system interannual variation has critical roles on the winter–spring cohort of the neon flying squid stock.  相似文献

The association of the micro‐scale distribution of six plant species in a lawn, including the lawn grass, Zoysia japonica, with the soil's environmental factors was studied in an urban park in Kyoto, Japan. The cover of each plant species was scored in July and August. The relative elevation, depth of waterlogging after a shower, soil water content, and soil hardness were measured in 144 quadrats in a 12 m × 12 m plot. The subsurface soil was sampled at every fourth quadrat and was analyzed for the percentage of fine earth and the levels of total carbon, total nitrogen, and available phosphate. Three correlation criteria, namely the Pearson's, Mantel, and partial Mantel correlations, showed considerable disagreement in indicating whether or not there was a significant correlation between each plant species and environmental variable. Although the reason for the disagreement was not always clear, some unimodal or inverted unimodal responses of a plant species against an environmental factor, which was not detectable by the Pearson's correlation coefficient, were indicated to be significant by the Mantel or partial Mantel tests. There were four plant–environment pairs that had a significant correlation in all three criteria: Juncus tenuis in August had a positive correlation with the soil water content in July and August and a negative correlation with soil hardness and Z. japonica showed a negative correlation with the water content in August. The results suggest that the small patches of lawn with poor drainage are the sites of invasion by J. tenuis.  相似文献

Horse trekking (HT) is having a stroll on a horse along a walking trail in a forest, field, and/or sandy beach. Generally in HT, horses exercise in tandem line outside the riding facilities. Because the leading horse will be confronted with stressors in the forefront, we hypothesized that the leading horse shows higher stress responses than the following one. In order to verify the hypothesis, we compared short‐term stress responses between each position in six horses. Exercise consisted of 15 min of ground riding and 45 min of HT with walking and trotting. Heart rate variability was analyzed for 5 min at 30, 60, and 90 min after the exercising period. There was no significant difference in heart rate during exercise between leading and following positions. The high frequency / low frequency power band of heart rate variability, an index of sympathetic nervous activity, after exercise, tended to be higher in the leading position than following one (P < 0.1). The result in this study can suggest that the leading horse was in a higher stressed state than the following horse after HT.  相似文献

A number of field trials on rice productivity have demonstrated very high yield, but reported limited information on environmental factors. The objective of this study was to reveal the environmental factors associated with high rice productivity in the subtropical environment of Yunnan, China. We conducted cross-locational field experiments using widely different rice varieties in Yunnan and in temperate environments of Kyoto, Japan in 2002 and 2003. The average daily radiation throughout the growing season was greater at Yunnan (17.1 MJ m−2 day−1 average over 2 years) relative to Kyoto (13.2 MJ m−2 day−1). The average daily temperature throughout the growing season was 24.7 °C at Yunnan, and 23.8 °C at Kyoto. The highest yield (16.5 tonnes ha−1) was achieved by the F1 variety Liangyoupeijiu at Yunnan in 2003, and average yield of all varieties was 33% and 39% higher at Yunnan relative to Kyoto in 2002 and 2003, respectively. There was a close correlation between grain yield and aboveground biomass at maturity, while there was little variation in the harvest index among environments. Large biomass accumulation was mainly caused by intense incident radiation at Yunnan, as there was little difference in crop radiation use efficiency (RUE) between locations. Large leaf area index (LAI) was also suggested to be an important factor. Average nitrogen (N) accumulation over 2 years was 49% higher at Yunnan than at Kyoto, and also contributed to the large biomass accumulation at Yunnan. The treatments of varied N application for Takanari revealed that the ratio of N accumulated at maturity to the amount of fertilized N was significantly higher at Yunnan than at Kyoto, even though there was no great difference in soil fertility. The Takanari plot with high N application showed a N saturation in plant growth at Kyoto, which might be related to low radiation and relatively high temperatures during the mid-growth stage. These results indicate that the high potential yield of irrigated rice in Yunnan is achieved mainly by intense incident solar radiation, which caused the large biomass and the N accumulation. The low nighttime temperature during the mid-growth stage was also suggested to be an important factor for large biomass accumulation and high grain yield at Yunnan.  相似文献
