This study was conducted to evaluate the utilisation of the residual feed intake (RFI ) as a feed efficiency selection tool and its relationship with methane emissions. Eighteen Murrah buffalo (Bubalus bubalis ) heifers were fed ad libitum with total mixed ration (TMR ) for 120 days. Based on linear regression models involving dry matter intake (DMI ), average daily gain (ADG ) and mid‐test metabolic body size (MBW 0.75), heifers were assigned into low and high RFI groups. The RFI varied from ?0.09 to +0.12 kg DM /day with average RFI of ?0.05 and 0.05 kg DM /day in low and high RFI heifers respectively. Low RFI heifers ate 11.6% less DM each day, yet average daily gain (ADG ) and feed utilisation were comparable among low and high RFI groups. Low RFI heifers required significantly (< .05) less metabolizable energy for maintenance (ME m) compared to high RFI heifers. Apparent nutrient digestibility showed non‐significant difference (p >  .05) among low and high RFI groups. Although the nitrogen balance was similar among heifers of low and high RFI groups, nitrogen metabolism was significantly higher (> .05) in high RFI heifers. Comparison of data from heifers exhibiting the low (n  = 9) and high (n  = 9) RFI showed that the low RFI heifers have lower enteric methane production and methane losses than high RFI heifers. In conclusion, results of this study revealed that selection of more efficient buffalo heifers has multiple benefits, such as decreased feed intake and less emission of methane.  相似文献

The present study demonstrates the declining state of the major commercial fisheries of Lake Victoria, Kenya, a situation threatening sustainability of the lake's fishery. Data in the present study were derived from resource monitoring programmes that included hydro‐acoustics (2009–2018), trawl net fishing (2011–2018), frame surveys (2000–2016) and catch assessment surveys (2000–2015). The activities provided information on fish stocks and supported advice for fisheries management. The average fish stock densities for Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya of 8.92, 8.25 and 8.19 t/km2, respectively, were relatively similar. Diplomatic and sustainable efforts for harmony in fish harvesting among the fishers of the riparian countries are encouraged given the interdependence of the lake. The Kenyan and River Kagera regions had a higher proportion (≈ 4% each) of big‐sized Nile perch (≥50 cm total length) in 2018, signifying the critical breeding areas for Nile perch. To sustain the fishery, there is need to enforce a 36%–44% effort reduction for all the major fisheries, and enforcement of gear limits to avoid harvesting of immature fish and destruction of the lake ecosystem.  相似文献

Polyploid breeding is an effective tool to induce variability in the existing population, specifically in the crops having very narrow genetic base such as acid lime. Hence, an experiment was conducted to induce polyploidy in acid lime through colchicine treatment. Higher frequency of triploids were obtained in 250 μM colchicine treatment (27.27%), whereas combination of 3× (21.42%), 4× (13.33%) and aneuploid (6.67%) were induced at 500 μM colchicine treatment. Measurement of stomatal density and guard cell size of colchiploids revealed that the former one has negative relation with ploidy level and a positive relation was observed between guard cell size and ploidy level. Further, area and size of nuclei also had a positive relation with ploidy level. Hence, stomatal density, guard cell and nuclei size can be used effectively as morphological marker for preliminary polyploid screening. From the experiment, it can be concluded that 500 μM colchicine treatment of in vitro derived shoot tip explants of acid lime is optimum for creating maximum possible variability through polyploidization in the existing acid lime population.  相似文献

The effects of conceptual land cover change scenarios on the generation of storm runoffs were evaluated in the Nyando Basin. The spatial scenarios represented alternatives that vary between full deforestation and reforestation. Synthetic storm events of depths 40, 60 and 80 mm were formulated according to the rainfall patterns and assumed to have durations corresponding to the runoff times of concentration. The Natural Resource Conservation Service–Curve Number model was used to generate runoff volumes within the sub‐catchments, which were subsequently routed downstream to obtain effects in the whole basin. The simulated land cover change impacts were evaluated relative to values obtained from the actual land cover state of the basin in the year 2000. From the results, an agricultural land cover scenario constituting of about 86 per cent of agriculture indicated increased runoff volumes in the entire basin by about 12 per cent. An agricultural‐forested land cover scenario with 40 and 51 per cent of forest and agriculture respectively revealed reduced runoff volumes by about 12 per cent. Alternatively, a scenario depicting a largely forested land cover state with about 78 per cent of forests reduced the runoff volumes by about 25 per cent according to the model estimates. Runoff volumes in the basin were also likely to reduce by about 15 per cent if the appropriate land cover scenario for the respective sub‐catchments were to be assumed for runoff management purposes. Considering the prevalent data uncertainty, the study effectively highlights the potential hydrological vulnerability of the basin. Toxicokinetic behavior and metabolism studies of metamitron and its effect on the cytochrome P(450) content of liver microsomal pellet were carried out in black Bengal goats after a single oral administration at 278 mg kg(-1) and consecutive oral administration of 30 mg kg(-1) for 7 days. Metamitron was detected in the blood sample at 0.08 h (12.0 +/- 0.87 microg mL(-1)), maximum at 4 h (84.3 +/- 8.60 microg mL(-1)) and minimum (14.6 +/- 1.67 microg mL(-1)) at 36 h blood sample after a single oral administration. The absorption rate constant was 0.69 +/- 0.09 h(-1). The Vd(area) (2.00 +/- 0.08 L kg(-1)) and t(1/2)beta (8.98 +/- 0.70 h) values suggested wide distribution and long persistence of the compound in the body. The values of T approximately B (0.80 +/- 0.04), F(c) (0.55 +/- 0.01), Cl(B) (0.15 +/- 0.00 L kg(-1) h(-1)), and K(21) (0.41 +/- 0.03 h(-1)) suggested that metamitron retained in the blood compared to that in the tissue. Maximum concentration of metamitron residue was found in the adrenal gland followed by bile on day 4 of single oral administration. The higher Cl(R) compared to Cl(H) value indicated the excretion of the major portion (34-40%) through urine compared to feces (20-26%). Maximum concentrations of metamitron and its metabolite, deaminometamitron, were excreted through urine and feces at 48 and 24 h samples, respectively. The recovery of metamitron including its metabolite in terms of parent compound varied from 69.3 to 80.1%, of which contribution of metabolite in terms of parent compound varied from 53.1 to 63.0%. Repeated oral administration of metamitron at 30 mg kg(-1) for 7 days caused induction of the cytochrome P(450) content of liver microsomal pellet of goat, suggesting oxidative deamination of metamitron.  相似文献

Soil water and phosphorus availabilities play crucial role in yield and water use pattern of pulse crops. A field experiment with rajmash (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) as a test crop was carried out during the winter seasons of 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 on a sandy loam soil (Aeric Haplaquept) in eastern India. In the main plots, irrigation was applied when the cumulative pan evaporation reached: (i) 33 mm (CPE33), (ii) 44 mm (CPE44) and (iii) 66 mm (CPE66). In sub-plots, four levels of phosphate fertilizer were applied at: (i) 0 (P0); (ii) 30 (P30); 60 (P60) and 90 kg P2O5 ha−1 (P90). Irrespective of crop growth stage, the highest leaf area index (LAI), biomass, grain yield and water use efficiency were obtained under the combination of CPE33-P90. Magnitude of these parameters, in general, decreased with the decrease in irrigation frequency and phosphate levels. With the advancement of crop growing period, cumulative actual evapotranspiration (CAET) increased linearly. Best matching between CAET and cumulative pan evaporation data was recorded under CPE33-P90 treatments. A linear relationship with high coefficient of determination was obtained between total biomass and CAET. Present study showed that crop response factor (ky) of the crop was 1.91.  相似文献

In jute (Corchorus olitorius), quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis was conducted to study the genetics of eight fibre yield traits and two fibre quality traits. For this purpose, we used a mapping population consisting of 120 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) and also used a linkage map consisting of 36 SSR markers that was developed by us earlier (Das et al. 2011). The RIL population was derived from the cross JRO 524 (coarse fibre) × PPO4 (fine fibre) following single seed descent. Using single-locus analysis involving composite interval mapping, a total of 21 QTLs were identified for eight fibre yield traits whereas for fibre quality (fibre fineness), only one QTL was detected. The QTL for fibre fineness explained 8.31–10.56% of the phenotypic variation and was detected in two out of three environments. Using two-locus analysis involving QTLNetwork, as many as 11 M-QTLs were identified for seven fibre yield traits (excluding top diameter) and one M-QTL was identified for fibre fineness which accounted for 4.57% of the phenotypic variation. For six fibre yield traits, we detected 16 E-QTLs involved in nine QQ epistatic interactions. For fibre fineness, four E-QTLs involved in two QQ epistatic interactions and for fibre strength, six E-QTLs involved in three QQ epistatic interactions were identified. Eight out of the 11 M-QTLs observed for the fibre yield traits were also involved in QE interactions; for fibre fineness and fibre strength, no QE interactions were observed.  相似文献

In India, zinc (Zn) has been recognized as the fourth most important yield-limiting nutrient after nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). Supplementing the zinc (Zn) requirement of agricultural crops through water soluble zinc sulfate ZnSO4 fertilizer is a costly management option whereas, utilization of ZnO (water insoluble and a cheaper material) as a source of Zn could be an alternative cost effective option to encourage farmers for wider adoption. In this present investigation, in order to supply the requisite amount of Zn to the plants, a protocol has been developed to coat the seeds of maize (Zea mays L.), soybean (Glycine max L.), pigeon pea (Cajanas cajan L.) and ladies finger (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) with microns scale (<3 µm) and nano-scale (<100 nm) ZnO powder at 25 mg Zn/g seed and at 50 mg Zn/g seed. Different Zn sources, ethyl alcohol, and crude pine oleoresin (POR) were used for coating of seeds. The germination test carried out with coated and uncoated seeds indicated better germination percentage (93–100%) due to ZnO coating as compared to uncoated seeds (80%). Pot culture experiment conducted with coated seeds also revealed that the crop growth with ZnO coated seeds were similar to that observed with soluble Zn treatment applied as zinc sulfate heptahydrate (ZnSO4·7H2O) (at 2.5 ppm Zn) which is evident from the periodic SPAD reading taken after 20, 25, 30 and 45 days after sowing. Application of Zn through different sources also enhanced the auxin indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production in plant roots, which subsequently improved the overall growth. The most important advantage of seed coating with ZnO (both micron/nano-scale) is that it did not exert any osmotic potential at the time of germination of the seed, thus, the total requirement of Zn of the crop can be loaded with the seed effectively through nano-scale ZnO particle.  相似文献

Triploid Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch) showed sterility and higher growth potential than the normal diploid fish. Activities of some metabolic enzymes such as cytosolic NADP-malate dehydrogenase (NADP-MDH), mitochondrial NAD-malate dehydrogenase (NAD-MDH) and glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) were evaluated in liver, brain and kidney along with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-P D) in ovary of female triploid catfish. Activities of these enzymes showed distinct seasonal periodicity, mostly with highest activities in prespawning and spawning periods, in both diploid and triploid catfish but differed in magnitude. In triploid liver, GPT showed higher activity than the diploid counterpart in prespawning and spawning periods. On the contrary, mitochondrial NAD-MDH and cytosolic NADP-MDH in this organ showed a consistent lower activity than the diploid in all stages or in some stages of reproductive cycle respectively. Interestingly, none of the enzymes in brain and kidney of triploid female catfish showed significant changes in comparison to the diploid counterpart. The triploid ovary maintained a significantly lower level of G-6-P D activity throughout the resting, preparatory and pre-spawning periods compared to the diploid ovary. Lower level of malic enzymes (NAD-MDH and NADP-MDH) in liver and G-6-P D in ovary are in close synchrony with lower level of estradiol-17β in plasma of female triploids as found in earlier study.  相似文献
