Initial treatment of colic

This article discusses some of the rationales for the medical management of colic during the initial treatment period. The issue of colic pain control and the masking of clinical signs that may indicate severe gastrointestinal disease is addressed. Therapeutic considerations related to dehydration, metabolic imbalances, hemostatic disorders, antimicrobial therapy, fecal consistency, gastrointestinal decompression, and regulation of intestinal motility are reviewed.     

Synovial fluid from an African spur-thighed tortoise (Geochelone sulcata)

A 4.5-year old, male African spur-thighed tortoise (Geochelone sulcata) was presented to the University of Florida Veterinary Teaching Hospital with a 2-week history of lethargy, anorexia, constipation, dyspnea, and coughing up fluid or vomiting. Laboratory results included an inflammatory leukogram and a marked increase in plasma uric acid concentration. Synovial fluid from multiple joints was thick, chalky white, and opaque, with a grainy consistency. Microscopically, the fluid contained numerous brown, needle-like crystals consistent with urates (gout). Gross necropsy findings and histopathology confirmed a diagnosis of systemic gout, with urate deposition, gout tophi, and underlying necrosis in multiple organs, including kidneys, lung, and liver. Dehydration with concurrent renal insufficiency may have impaired urate excretion and led to a build-up of urates in the blood and tissues of this tortoise. A high protein diet also may have contributed to the development of gout. Cytologic evaluation of synovial fluid can be used as a quick and definitive tool to diagnose gout in tortoises.     

Effects of atracurium on intraocular pressure, eye position, and blood pressure in eucapnic and hypocapnic isoflurane-anesthetized dogs

OBJECTIVE: To determine effects of atracurium on intraocular pressure (IOP), eye position, and arterial blood pressure in eucapnic and hypocapnic dogs anesthetized with isoflurane. ANIMALS: 16 dogs. PROCEDURE: Ventilation during anesthesia was controlled to maintain Paco2 at 38 to 44 mm Hg in group- I dogs (n = 8) and 26 to 32 mm Hg in group-II dogs (8). Baseline measurements for IOP, systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressure, central venous pressure (CVP), and heart rate (HR) were recorded. Responses to peroneal nerve stimulation were monitored by use of a force-displacement transducer. Atracurium (0.2 mg/kg) was administered i.v. and measurements were repeated at 1, 2, 3, and 5 minutes and at 5-minute intervals thereafter for 60 minutes. RESULTS: Atracurium did not affect IOP, HR, or CVP Group II had higher CVP than group I, but IOP was not different. There was no immediate effect of atracurium on arterial blood pressure. Arterial blood pressure increased gradually over time in both groups. Thirty seconds after administration of atracurium, the eye rotated from a ventromedial position to a central position and remained centrally positioned until 100% recovery of a train-of-four twitch response. The time to 100% recovery was 53.1 +/- 5.3 minutes for group I and 46.3 +/- 9.2 minutes for group II. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Atracurium did not affect IOP or arterial blood pressure in isoflurane-anesthetized dogs. Hyperventilation did not affect IOP or the duration of effect of atracurium.     

Reducing gaseous nitrogen loss from stored laying hen manure by the addition of carbohydrates

Three separate experiments were conducted to determine if the addition of carbohydrate sources directly to freshly-produced laying hen manure reduced the loss of gaseous nitrogen containing compounds during 7 d of storage. The addition of sucrose (8 g/kg) to the manure resulted in a greater increase in bacterial numbers, a greater loss of carbon and a trend for a reduced loss of nitrogen. Although glucose addition to the manure increased bacterial numbers and tended to increase carbon loss, nitrogen loss increased relative to the control. Addition of straw to the manure did not affect the change in bacterial numbers or rate of nitrogen loss compared to the control treatment. Experiment 2 indicated that, when either sucrose or maltose were mixed (8 g/kg) with laying hen manure, microbial numbers were increased and gaseous nitrogen losses were reduced. A combination of starch plus alpha-amylase did not affect the characteristics of the manure. Experiment 3 showed that increasing sucrose addition gave a non-linear reduction in nitrogen loss. Minimum nitrogen loss was obtained with 35 g/kg sucrose, though the maximum increase in bacterial numbers occurred at 20 g/kg of added sucrose.     

Regulated expression of peripheral node addressin-positive high endothelial venules controls seeding of B lymphocytes into developing neonatal rabbit appendix

Young rabbit appendix is a homologue of chicken bursa of Fabricius; both are crucial sites for preimmune B-cell repertoire diversification. Here, we report that appendix regulates precursor lymphocyte recruitment for further development by modulating the sites of extravasation. The total area of peripheral node addressin-positive (PNAd(+)) high endothelial venules (HEVs) increased from 1 day to 1 week after birth, remained constant up to 2 weeks and declined to a low and persistent amount by 3 weeks. In normal 1-week and manipulated 5-week appendix where growth of follicles was retarded, PNAd(+) HEVs were present in the basolateral sides of B-cell follicles whereas, in normal 5-wk-appendix these were restricted to T-cell areas. The PNAd was expressed on the lumenal surface of HEVs. The proportions of CD62L(+) B cells in appendix declined from approximately 40% at 3 days to 2-3% at 4 weeks. In lymphocyte transfer experiments, CD62L(+) B cells were preferentially recruited compared with CD62L(-) B cells, anti-PNAd antibody blocked migration of B cells by approximately 50%, and 100 times more B cells were recruited in 1-week compared to 6-week appendix. Thus, a unique spatiotemporal expression pattern of PNAd(+) HEVs is associated with development of B-cell follicles. This regulates migration of blood-borne B-lymphocytes into developing appendix by interacting with CD62L.     

Rupture of the Vinculum in Association with Tendon Injury within the Digital Flexor Tendon Sheath in Two Horses

The following report documents an unusual anatomical finding in two cases of aseptic tenosynovitis of the digital flexor tendon sheath. Disruption of the vinculum attachment between the palmar/plantar border of the superficial digital flexor tendon and the adjacent palmar/plantar annular ligament was identified in combination with other tendon pathology within the digital flexor tendon sheath. This tenoscopic finding has not been described previously in the literature.
