Summary Various cardiorespiratory and metabolic indices were assessed during treadmill exercise in Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses with T wave changes in 4 or more leads on the electrocardiogram or second-degree atrio-ventricular (AV) block, and in horses that had no abnormalities on clinical examination, resting electrocardiography or upper respiratory tract endoscopy. No significant differences in heart rate, plasma lactate concentration, arterial blood gases, oxygen uptake, run time, peak velocity, or blood and red cell volumes were found between normal horses and horses with T wave changes or second-degree AV block. These results indicate that some electrocardiographic findings that are considered by some clinicians to indicate cardiac dysfunction, may have little effect on exercise capacity. 相似文献

Bovine embryonic kidney cells were infected with bovine herpesviruses (BHV1, 2, or 3), suid herpesvirus 1 (SHV1), or were sham-inoculated. When cytopathic effect was apparent, the cells were solubilized using Triton X-100 detergent. Resulting antigen preparations were tested by 2-dimensional immunoelectrophoresis using bovine fetal serum and antisera directed against BHV1, BHV2, BHV3, SHV1 or a restricted spectrum of BHV1 antigens. Interaction of BHV1 antiserum with BHV1 antigen preparations resulted in 11 precipitation arcs. The same antiserum produced 3 arcs with BHV2, none with BHV3, and 5 with SHV1. The interaction of BHV1 antigen preparations with BHV2, BHV3, or SHV1 antisera failed to produce demonstrable arcs. However, when heterologous antigen or antibody preparations were added to BHV1 homologous 2-dimensional immunoelectrophoresis tests, all 11 BVH1 arcs were modified by BHV1, 2 by BHV2, 4 by BHV3 and 4 by SHV1 preparations. Two antigens were common to the 4 herpesviruses. Antigen preparations were tested for their ability to inhibit virus neutralization by BHV1 antiserum; only the BHV1 preparation was active. Sera were tested for BHV1 neutralizing activity; only BHV1 antiserum and a serum specific for a restricted spectrum of BHV1 antigens were active. A glycoprotein antigen associated with BHV1 neutralization was identified which may be important in the protection of animals against disease. 相似文献

Two infectious bursal disease viruses (IBDVs)--a cell-culture-adapted chicken strain designated Edgar strain and a recent isolate from turkeys in Missouri--were used to assay sera from 10 Iowa turkey flocks collected between 1 and 16 weeks of age. The two viruses were serologically distinct in cross-neutralization tests. For all flocks, a similar serologic pattern was found consisting of (1) low maternal antibody titers to turkey IBDV and occasionally to Edgar strain IBDV between 1 and 3 weeks of age, (2) a period of very low or no detectable titers between 3 and 7 weeks of age, and (3) sharply rising high titers to turkey IBDV with low titers to Edgar IBDV beginning at 5 to 8 weeks of age. These findings indicate that infection with IBDV of the serotype represented in this study by the turkey isolate is common in Iowa turkey flocks, whereas infection with IBDV represented by Edgar strain is uncommon. Infection occurred between 3 and 7 weeks of age during the late brooding period or after birds had been moved to an intermediate growing facility. All flocks developed complicated respiratory disease with excessive mortality caused by Escherichia coli septicemia, typically between 3 and 6 weeks of age. The changes in serum and urinary levels of calcium and phosphorus and serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) were studied during controlled, chemically induced, acute renal disease in 4 ponies. There was an initial rise in daily urinary calcium and hydroxyproline excretion in 2 ponies which may have indicated increased bone resorption. Mild hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia and elevated C-terminal PTH levels were associated with oliguria. Total daily urinary excretion of calcium and phosphorus decreased as oliguria developed. The levels of C-terminal PTH were increased in all four animals. This appears to have been related to their diminished renal function in that C-terminal fragments of intact PTH (which require functioning kidneys in order to be cleared) were probably being accumulated. Although there was no evidence with regard to an actual increase in PTH secretion, prolongation of intact PTH half-life due to renal tubular damage may have contributed to the development of hypercalcemia. 相似文献

SUMMARY The presence of abnormal T waves in three or more electrocardiographic leads has been used to diagnose the cause of poor race performance in horses. This study investigated the relationship between previous racing performance in Standardbred horses and T waves, and the effect of training on the T wave. Thirty-two horses were electrocardiographed in two Sydney racing stables. Sixteen horses (50%) had ECGs with three or more leads with abnormal T waves, and these horses had won more races, had a greater ratio of wins per start and a greater number of dollars earned per start than horses with less than three abnormal T waves (P < 0.05). Horses with abnormal T waves also had significantly faster racing times (P < 0.01). There were significant (P < 0.01) correlations between the number of abnormal T waves and both number of wins (R = 0.47) and dollars earned per start (R = 0.45). Fastest winning mile rate was also negatively correlated with number of leads with abnormal T waves (R =?0.52, P < 0.01). Twenty two horses were also electrocardiographed within seven days of good racing performance. The mean number of abnormal T waves was 2.7 ± 0.41, and the mean T wave amplitude in the four chest leads (CV, CR, CL, CF) was 0.9 ± 0.15 mV. Thirteen horses (59%) had abnormal T waves in three or more leads. The effect of training on the T wave was also investigated in nine previously untrained and unraced Standardbred racehorses. There were significant effects of training (P < 0.01) on the number of abnormal T waves and mean chest lead T wave amplitude. These increases occurred in the second phase of training during which faster exercise, race trials and racing were conducted. We concluded that abnormal T waves are a common finding in the race-fit Standardbred horse, and can be found in more than 50% of horses currently performing well in races. Restriction deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) fragment profile analysis coupled with immunogenic protein profile analysis has provided useful information in determining the differences between vaccine strains and field isolates of fowlpox virus (FPV). The DNA of strains examined in this study clearly fell into 3 minor groups of restriction patterns similar but distinct from one another: restriction patterns exhibited by the vaccine strains except 1 vaccine strain, Vac-82; restriction profiles indicated by Vac-82 and field isolates FI-38 and FI-42; and restriction patterns indicated by field isolates FI-43, FI-51, FI-54, and FI-56. Furthermore, when the strains were analyzed and compared by immunoblotting analysis, they showed group differences similar to the differences in restriction profiles. Both techniques provided high sensitivity in verifying differences between vaccine strains and field isolates of FPV. The disparity found in restriction fragments or immunogenic protein profile between vaccine strains and field isolates does not exclude the appreciable high degree of DNA sequence conservation and homology. However, the minor disparity observed in these strains suggests a molecular basis for why vaccinated commercial flocks could have continually been infected by variant strains of FPV. A rapid and sensitive polymerase chain reaction method, which amplified a product from the 4b core protein gene of the FPV genome, was developed for identification and differentiation of members of the genus Avipoxvirus. Whereas total DNA from either vaccine strains or field isolates was used as template for amplifying a predicted product of 578 or 1409 bp, only cleavage of the amplified product (1409 bp) represented an additional detection technique for species differentiation.
