Spectral analysis allows the characterization of temporal (1D) or spatial (2D) patterns in terms of their scale (frequency)
distribution. Cross-spectral analysis can also be used to conduct independent correlation analyses at different scales between
two variables, even in the presence of a complex superposition of structures, such as structures that are shifted, have different
scales or have different levels of anisotropy. These well-grounded approaches have rarely been applied to two-dimensional
ecological datasets. In this contribution, we illustrate the potential of the method. We start by providing a basic methodological
introduction, and we clarify some technical points concerning the computation of two-dimensional coherency and phase spectra
and associated confidence intervals. First, we illustrate the method using a simple theoretical model. Next, we present a
real world application: the case of patterned (gapped) vegetation in SW Niger. In this example, we investigate the functional
relationships between topography and the spatial distribution of two shrub species, Combretum micranthum G. Don. and Guiera senegalensis J.F. Gmel. We show that both the global vegetation pattern and the distribution of C. micranthum are independent at all analyzable scales (i.e., from 10 to 50 m) from possible relief-induced determinisms. Additionally,

Fisheries have removed at least 50 million tons of tuna and other top-level predators from the Pacific Ocean pelagic ecosystem since 1950, leading to concerns about a catastrophic reduction in population biomass and the collapse of oceanic food chains. We analyzed all available data from Pacific tuna fisheries for 1950-2004 to provide comprehensive estimates of fishery impacts on population biomass and size structure. Current biomass ranges among species from 36 to 91% of the biomass predicted in the absence of fishing, a level consistent with or higher than standard fisheries management targets. Fish larger than 175 centimeters fork length have decreased from 5% to approximately 1% of the total population. The trophic level of the catch has decreased slightly, but there is no detectable decrease in the trophic level of the population. These results indicate substantial, though not catastrophic, impacts of fisheries on these top-level predators and minor impacts on the ecosystem in the Pacific Ocean. 相似文献

River networks are often derived from digital terrain models and are affected by uncertainty and errors of the corresponding elevation data. The analysis of the spatial distribution of the errors provides information on the confidence level of the derived networks. However indications on the most probable river network as a whole are missing. This study proposes a method to indicate which is the river network maximising the sum of the probability values along the network, given a map reporting the likelihood that a cell belongs to the network itself. The method is considering the inverse of the channel probability map as pseudo-DEM from which drainage networks are derived. A reference network is used to assess the spatial match of the extracted river networks using the Euclidean distance as simple comparison parameter. The network extracted from the inverse of the channel probability map is the closest to the reference. The use of a probabilistic approach to error modelling significantly increases the values of channel probability for extracted river networks and the spatial match with a ground reference dataset. 相似文献

Floods are known to be the major source of natural variability and disturbance in stream ecosystems. However, the management and channelisation of large rivers have impacted the fluvial geomorphology and disconnected the main channel and floodplains used as nurseries by many species of fish. This study examines the influence of a first autumnal flood event of the Ardèche River on the roach population, Rutilus rutilus (Linnaeus, 1758), in the Caderousse reach on the Rhône River. This influence was evaluated through an analysis of the spatial distribution for the abundance and size of juvenile roach and an analysis of otolith shape. Juvenile roach from the three sections of the reach formed well‐defined local populations before and after the flood event. Juvenile roach were always more abundant in the less modified section (BPS) of the river than in the other sections (RES and TAIL). While the original primary river channel was directly impacted by the flash flood, no significant difference in otolith shape was observed before or after the flash flood. Our results suggest that this part of the reach provides refuge habitats used by fish during high flow events. 相似文献

Purpose
Leaf transpiration drives many of the processes involved in phyto-technologies, and it can represent a useful mechanism to remove water from different kind of storage basins presenting inorganic, organic or microbiological contamination (phyto-dehydration), with the aim to reduce the risk of environmental contamination. In this framework, a mesocosm-scale trial was carried out to test the capacity of different helophyte species to reduce the excess of water in an artificial pond filled with oversaturated sludge.Materials and methods
The sludge derives from the digestion of pig slurries, presents high levels of zinc and copper and for most of the year is covered by a water layer of about 20 cm due to rainfalls. This layout (water layer over the sludge) was reproduced inside the mesocosms, where four helophyte species (Phragmites australis and a mix of Carex acutiformis, Iris pseudacorus and Juncus effusus) were planted on floating frames. Plant growth and functionality were monitored for one year, along with their water consumption capacity; the vegetation impact on sludge chemistry, sludge microbial community and sludge greenhouse gases emission/uptake were also evaluated. The sensitivity of the phyto-dehydration system to the reduction of water level occurring during summer in the pond was investigated reducing the water input to the mesocosms.Results and discussion
P. australis and C. acutiformis successfully established in the mesocosms, while a significant mortality was recorded for I. psudacorus and J. effusus. Once established, plants were able to grow in the mesocosms, and no metal toxicity effect was observed on photosynthesis rates that were comparable with values reported for natural stands of the species. Plants significantly increased (from 24 to 63%, depending on the species) the amount of water lost by the mesocosms and counteracted the reduction of sludge organic carbon that could lead to a mobilization of the heavy metals bound to organic matter: furthermore, plants decreased the rates of mesocosm greenhouse gas emission and reduced the sludge pathogen (Enterobacteriaceae) occurrence. Water limitations reversibly reduced the water consumption and CO2 uptake capacity of the mesocosms.Conclusions
The results of this study demonstrated that the water balance of a sludge/water system can be effectively modified through the phyto-dehydration approach, increasing significantly the amount of water lost. Although the low tolerance of two species to the sludge/water environment after plantation needs to be further investigated, this phyto-technology can represent a promising approach to manage the excess of water in polluted ponds.988.

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, the causative agent of porcine enzootic pneumonia, is present in swine herds worldwide. However, there is little information on strains infecting herds in Canada. A total of 160 swine lungs with lesions suggestive of enzootic pneumonia originating from 48 different farms were recovered from two slaughterhouses and submitted for gross pathology. The pneumonic lesion scores ranged from 2% to 84%.Eighty nine percent of the lungs (143/160) were positive for M. hyopneumoniae by real-time PCR whereas 10% (16/160) and 8.8% (14/160) were positive by PCR for M. hyorhinis and M. flocculare, respectively. By culture, only 6% of the samples were positive for M. hyopneumoniae (10/160). Among the selected M. hyopneumoniae-positive lungs (n = 25), 9 lungs were co-infected with M. hyorhinis, 9 lungs with PCV2, 2 lungs with PRRSV, 12 lungs with S. suis and 10 lungs with P. multocida. MLVA and PCR-RFLP clustering of M. hyopneumoniae revealed that analyzed strains were distributed among three and five clusters respectively, regardless of severity of lesions, indicating that no cluster is associated with virulence. However, strains missing a specific MLVA locus showed significantly less severe lesions and lower numbers of bacteria. MLVA and PCR-RFLP analyses also showed a high diversity among field isolates of M. hyopneumoniae with a greater homogeneity within the same herd. Objective To evaluate the use and complications of a penetrating keratoprosthesis implantation in the management of corneal opacification in dogs. Methods A retrospective clinical study describes the indications for the surgical technique utilized and the outcomes of this procedure in 20 eyes of 19 dogs with blindness of corneal origin. A successful surgical outcome was defined as a clear keratoprosthesis optic and improvement or restoration of functional vision over a follow‐up period ranging from at least 8 months to a maximum of 7 years. Results Eyes with total corneal opacification resulting from chronic superficial keratitis (n = 11), keratoconjunctivitis sicca (n = 5), endothelial dystrophy (n = 3) and chemical burn (n = 1) were treated by unilateral (n = 18) or bilateral (n = 1) full‐thickness implantation of a keratoprosthesis. Keratoprostheses were retained in 15 eyes (75%) which regained vision to the date of reporting. Among these eyes, six had uncomplicated postoperative course, five developed retroprosthetic membranes and four developed granulation tissue over the optic of the keratoprostheses. These complications were successfully removed surgically in the nine eyes. The five remaining eyes (25%) developed serious early postoperative complications, for which enucleation had to be performed. Conclusion In keratopathies in which the corneal opacification could not be treated by standard medical or surgical procedures, this keratoprosthesis appears to be promising to restore vision in chronic superficial keratitis and deep corneal dystrophy. It appears to have a poor prognosis in keratoconjunctivitis sicca in brachycephalic dogs. The post operative complications retro‐prosthetic membranes and granulomatous overgrowth could be treated well. 相似文献

The chemical fertility of the forest soils in the Belgian Ardenne is threatened by acidifying and eutrophying deposition and
by the nutrient removal due to timber harvesting. Experiments were launched to evaluate the ability of liming and fertilization
to improve foliar nutrition, maintain or restore crown condition and promote tree growth. In 1995, 10 liming and fertilization
trials were installed in even-aged stands of European beech (5) and Norway spruce (5) distributed throughout the Ardenne.
In each stand, two treatments were tested: liming with 3,000 kg ha−1 of dolomitic limestone and liming plus fertilization with 0 to 800 kg ha−1 of rock phosphate and 0 to 350 kg ha−1 of K2SO4. Between 1995 and 2006, the foliar Ca and Mg status of spruce and beech trees improved in the limed stands, which limited
significantly but did not prevent the decline in crown condition triggered by the summer drought in 2003. For spruce, liming
also increased the increment in basal area. The additional fertilization increased the foliar nutrition in P but had no significant
