Phenylbutazone (PBZ) is a nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drug used in the treatment of chronic pain and arthritis. Topical and transdermal administration of PBZ would be beneficial in large animals in terms of minimizing gastro‐intestinal ulcerations and other side effects, easy administration to legs and joints and minimizing the dose to reduce systemic toxicity of the drug. A topical liposomal preparation with different concentrations of a mono‐substituted alkyl amide (MSA) and PBZ was formulated. The formulations were evaluated by in vitro skin‐permeation kinetics through deer skin using Franz diffusion cells. By increasing drug loading from 1% to 5% w/w, the steady‐state flux (μg/cm2/h) of PBZ was increased twofold (P < 0.001). Similarly, by increasing the MSA concentration from 0% to 4%, the steady‐state flux (μg/cm2/h) of PBZ was increased twofold (P < 0.001). Overall, by increasing the drug load and the use of an appropriate amount of the penetration enhancer, the steady‐state flux of PBZ through skin was increased fourfold (P < 0.001). MSA at both 2% and 4% w/w concentrations significantly increased the skin levels of PBZ as compared with control (P < 0.05). In conclusion, MSA served as an effective skin‐penetration enhancer in the liposomal gel of PBZ for deer. 相似文献

Objective— To report the prevalence of hypophosphatemia after renal transplantation in a historical cohort of cats. Design— Case series. Animals— Cats (n=86) that received a renal allograft. Methods— Medical records (January 200–June 2006) were reviewed. Signalment, clinical signs, pre‐ and postoperative diet, pre‐ and postoperative clinicopathologic variables, renal histopathology, and outcome were retrieved. Prevalence, onset, duration, treatment and associated clinical signs of hypophosphatemia were recorded. A χ2 test was used to compare hemolysis frequency between cats with normal serum phosphorus concentration or a single spurious low serum phosphorus concentration for <24 hours duration (group 1) and confirmed hypophosphatemia for >24 hours (group 2). A Cox proportional hazards model was used to evaluate the effects of hypophosphatemia on survival while controlling for other potentially confounding variables (age, sex, weight, body condition score, and pre‐ and 24 hours postoperative clinicopathologic variables). Results— Eighty‐six cats (mean age, 7.7 years) were identified. Hypophosphatemia occurred in 32 cats (37%), with a median onset of 2 days and median duration of 4 days. Treatment was initiated in 48 (56%) of hypophosphatemic cats. Survival and hemolysis frequency was not significantly different between groups, and no risk factors were identified. Conclusion— Hypophosphatemia occurs in cats after renal transplantation and does not affect survival. Clinical Relevance— The clinical importance of hypophosphatemia in renal transplant recipients remains unknown. 相似文献

Rodents are globally important pre‐harvest pests of rice. In Southeast Asia, rodent damage to growing rice crops is commonly concentrated towards the center of rice fields, away from the field edge, resulting in a clear pattern known as the “stadium effect.” To further understand this behavior of rodent pests and to develop recommendations for future research and management, we examined the relation between giving‐up densities (GUDs) and damage patterns. In Tanay, Luzon, Philippines, GUD trays containing pieces of coconut in a matrix of sand were placed at 4 different distances from the field edge to quantify the perceived risk of predation in a rice field pest, Rattus tanezumi. GUDs were recorded during a dry and wet season crop at the reproductive and ripening stages of rice. In addition, assessments of active burrows, tracking tile activity and rodent damage to the rice crop, were conducted in the dry season. GUDs were significantly lower in the center of the rice fields than on the field edges, suggesting that rodent damage to rice is greater in the middle of rice fields due to a lower perceived predation risk. Furthermore, this perception of predation risk (or fear) increases towards the field edge and was greatest on the rice bund, where there was no vegetation cover. We discuss the implications for rodent management and rodent damage assessments in rice fields. This is the first documented use of GUDs in a rice agro‐ecosystem in Asia; thus we identify the challenges and lessons learned through this process. 相似文献

The effect of management on dry matter yield and persistence of eight cultivars was assessed over a 3-year period (1978–80) under integration of sheep grazing and simulated sheep grazing with cutting for conservation, and the two cutting frequencies used in the National List trials. A high correlation was obtained in the first and second harvest years between managements in respect of annual production, the ranking order of yield being similar for the range of cultivars. In the third harvest year yield correlation and persistence between sheep grazing and simulated sheep grazing was high and similar to previous years, but all other yield and persistence correlations were considerably reduced. A major effect of frequent cutting management used in the National List trials was the increase in the proportion of unsown grasses (mainly Poa spp.) in the swards. 相似文献

Two modifications have been made to the dry-weight-rank (DWR) method for measuring botanical composition. One previous limitation of the method has been that it gives biased results in pastures where there is a consistent relation between quadrat dry matter yield and the order in which species are ranked for yield. A weighting factor, applied to the DWR multipliers and based on pasture yield in quadrats estimated for dry weight rank, can correct for this bias. In routine pasture sampling quadrat yields are often visually estimated in the same quadrats in which composition is assessed by DWR. These estimated quadrat yields can then be used as weighting factors to improve the accuracy of DWR as well as to estimate pasture yield. Dry weight rank has also been unsuited to pastures which are heavily dominated by one species but this problem can be lessened by assigning more than one rank to the dominant species, a method referred to as ‘cumulative ranking’. Both these modifications were found to give a more accurate estimate of composition using data from a wide range of tropical and temperate pastures. On the other hand, creation of new DWR multipliers for particular cases was inadvisable. All data made available for this study and the original data ('t Mannetje and Haydock, 1963) were used to derive new multipliers: 0·705, 0·238 and 0·057. Stable hybrids were produced between tetraploid perennial and Italian ryegrasses derived from commercial varieties and germplasm introduced from European collections. Spaced plant characteristics were used to select Fl plants for the production of F2 families which were assessed in small plots for growth and quality traits. Ten of the 19 selected hybrid families were based on perennial ryegrass collected from the Zurich Uplands. The influence of this parental material in improving vegetative growth during early spring, late summer and autumn was demonstrated. Its use in improving feeding value by increasing the water-soluble carbohydrate content of hybrids was also shown. Consequently, selected hybrid varieties based on this new genetic resource showed considerable improvements in seasonal growth and quality over the older hybrid variety Augusta and Italian ryegrass variety RvP. 相似文献

Oven-drying at 60°, 80° or 105°C was compared with microwave and freeze-drying as a method of preparing samples for the estimation of formononetin, the major oestrogenic factor in red clover. There was no significant difference in the formononetin concentration of clover samples either oven-dried at 60°C or freeze-dried. The formononetin concentration was reduced by drying at higher temperatures and by microwave-drying but was not affected by wilting for up to 8 h after harvesting. The routine determination of formononetin in ten varieties of red clover showed no significant differences between samples cold stored at – 18°C prior to oven-drying at 60°C and samples freeze-dried. 相似文献
