Abstract: A partial linkage map of melon was constructed from a cross between PI414723 and Dulce. Twenty-two SSR, 46RAPD,
2 ISSR markers and four horticultural markers [female flower form (a), Fusarium resistance, striped epicarp (st), and fruit flesh pH (pH)] were analyzed in an F2/F3 population to produce a map spanning 14 linkage groups. We report for the first time map positions for the st, a, and pH genes. One SSR marker was tightly linked to pH. Mapping the a gene for the female flower form to molecular linkage group 4 enabled the merging of the map of horticultural traits with
the of molecular markers in this region. Using the 22 SSR markers of this map, two of the three postulated ZYMV resistance
genes were located using a BC1 population (PI414723 recurrent parent). One SSR marker was tightly linked to a ZYMV resistance gene, designated Zym-1.

A Tuber melanosporum plantation established in 1994/1995 on Kibbutz Bar’am (in the Upper Galilee, Israel) gradually lost its T. melanosporum mycorrhiza. In 1999, T. aestivum inoculated seedlings were inadvertently introduced into the plantation to fill the gaps between trees. A single T. melanosporum fruit body was found in 1999. Although no truffles were found after 1999 and until 2009, in that year and in 2010, truffles
were collected. Morphological and molecular analyses proved these to be T. aestivum. Thus, the intentionally introduced T. melanosporum mycorrhiza was replaced by that of another introduced mycorrhizal fungus, T. aestivum. Local oak species produced higher yields compared to introduced host species known to be good T. melanosporum plant symbionts. The yield was comparable to that reported for young commercial orchards, but the fruiting season was earlier

The European vine moth Lobesia botrana Denis & Schiff. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a key pest in the vineyards of Israel and Europe. Traps baited with the female
sex pheromone are commonly used to monitor the pest population. However, the role of the vine cultivars on monitoring the
moth population using pheromone-baited traps was not yet studied. The present study aimed to identify the effect of grape
cultivars on L. botrana adult distribution patterns in the field, in order to achieve a better understanding of the monitored data in respect to
male and female’s host preference. The 3-year study in commercial vineyards used four cultivars: Carignan, Emerald Riesling,
French Colombard, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The moth population of each generation was estimated from male counts in pheromone
traps; three generations were observed in all experimental orchards, each year. Female host choice was studied by monitoring
freshly deposited eggs and newly hatched larvae on vines. The study showed a significant effect of cultivar on numbers of
trapped males in most years, and a cultivar effect on female host choice. For both males and females and for all phenological
stages of the grapes, Carignan and French Colombard attracted the most and Cabernet Sauvignon the fewest specimens. The results
show that cultivar blend within the vineyard can affect the distribution pattern of the pest. Knowledge of the expected choice
of the female moth, and of the timing of its decision could lead to an improved monitoring system, with the preferred cultivar

The antioxidative effect of the carotenoids phytoene and phytofluene in biological systems has not yet been studied. We therefore sought to investigate the effect of these carotenoids, isolated from the alga Dunaliella bardawil, in a biological system and used the in vitro low density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation method to assay their antioxidative effects. We found that similar to beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol, a carotenoid algal preparation containing phytoene and phytofluene inhibited LDL oxidation. These findings and the presence of phytoene and phytofluene in human tissues suggest that they can be part of the defense system against oxidative stress. 相似文献
