Adult ayu Plecoglossus altivelis were sampled from the Nezugaseki River, Yamagata Prefecture to investigate the reproductive parameters and analyze their
variations related to multiple spawning. Ovarian histology (mainly based on the occurrence of postovulatory follicles) indicated
that female ayu can be divided into four groups, which are considered to correspond with unspawned, once spawned, twice spawned,
and three (or more) times spawned individuals. Comprehensive analysis of the ovarian state with field surveys revealed that
most of the female ayu achieve second spawning and that third spawning is very common in this river. Mean relative batch fecundity
(RBF) for the second, third, and fourth spawning indicated 69, 42, and 22%, respectively, of the value for the first spawning,
showing a decline with the number of spawning batches. Mean gonadosomatic index (GSI) values of non-ovulating fish showed
a similar decline during the main spawning period (October). Condition factor (without gonads) during autumn also decreased
with the number of batches spawned, suggesting that multiple spawning is achieved partly by transfer of body mass nutrients
to the ovary. Size dependency in reproductive parameters such as occurrence of the multiple spawning, RBF values, and GSI
values of the unspawned fish, was not evident except for GSI values in early September (generally during the early phases

The pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis (Valenciennes 1835) and the Patagonian pejerrey Odontesthes hatcheri (Eigenmann 1909) are Atherinopsid species with commercial importance and potential for aquaculture. The hybrids of the two species are viable but their mode of sex determination is unknown. This study examined the gonadal histology and sex ratios of reciprocal hybrids that were reared at 15, 17, 21, 25 or 29 °C during the sex differentiation period. The genetic sex of hybrids from O. hatcheri fathers was inferred from a sex‐linked SNP marker. Both hybrids showed female‐biased sex ratios at the lowest temperature, female‐biased to balanced sex ratios at intermediate temperatures and balanced or male‐biased sex ratios at 29 °C, but unlike in purebred O. bonariensis, the lowest and highest temperatures did not yield monosex populations. The proportion of females in the offspring was affected more by parental genome than by hybrid combination. Female hybrids bearing the O. hatcheri Y chromosome showed temporary arrest of ovarian development that was rescued in adults. These results reveal strong interactions between genotype and temperature for sex determination and differentiation of the hybrids and provide important clues to understand the mechanisms of sex determination in these species. 相似文献

Female ayu Plecoglossus altivelis were sampled from the Mogami River System, Yamagata Prefecture to investigate the occurrence of multiple spawning that has
previously been reported in small rivers. Spawning frequencies of the females were estimated by histological observations
of the ovary mainly from the degree of degeneration of postovulatory follicles. In the middle and late part of the spawning
period, most females showed characteristics of having spawned two or three times, indicating that multiple spawning is a common
phenomenon also in a large river. Mean relative batch fecundity (RBF) and condition factor (without gonads) decreased with
the number of spawning batches. Size dependency in the occurrence of the multiple spawning and the RBF values was not observed.
These results are similar to those reported in previous studies of ayu from a small river near the Mogami River System, and
indicate that the occurrence and properties of multiple spawning are almost the same regardless of the river scale. However,
it is possible that the ratios of multiply spawned females may differ due to variations in survival rates during the spawning

Antioxidant and antiulcerative properties of phenolics from Chinese quince, quince, and apple fruits

To evaluate the health benefits of Chinese quince and quince phenolics, their antioxidant properties and antiulcerative activity were investigated in comparison with apple phenolics as a reference. The strength of antioxidant activity and DPPH radical scavenging activity of these fruit phenolics varied according to different in vitro evaluation systems, whereas the antioxidative property of rat blood increased in all rats orally administered phenolics. Ferulic acid and isoferulic acid were detected as major metabolites in rats given apple phenolics, quince phenolics, and 5-caffeoylquinic acid standard. (-)-Epicatechin and its 3'-O-methyl ether could be detected in rats administered apple phenolics and (-)-epicatechin standard. In the ethanol-induced gastric ulcer, pre-administration of Chinese quince and quince phenolics suppressed the occurrence of gastric lesions in rats, whereas apple phenolics seemed to promote ulceration. The trend of myeloperoxidase activity was similar to that of the ulcer index. The results showed that Chinese quince and quince phenolics might have health benefits by acting both in blood vessels and on the gastrointestinal tract. 相似文献

Vitamin C content in the fruit of various cultivars of kiwifruit and other Actinidia species was estimated by determination of L-ascorbic acid and L-dehydroascorbic acid using ion-pair reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Fruit of A. deliciosa cv. Hayward, the most common commercially available cultivar, contained 65.5 mg/100 g fresh weight (FW) vitamin C. Vitamin C content in A. deliciosa fruit varied from 29 mg/100 g FW to 80 mg/100 g FW. In most cultivars of A. chinensis, vitamin C content in fruit was higher than that of Hayward. In particular, vitamin C content in cv. Sanuki Gold fruit reached more than 3-fold that of Hayward on a weight for weight basis. In A. argutafruit, there was wide variation in vitamin C content, with concentrations ranging from 37 to 185 mg/100 g FW. In cv. Gassan, Issai, and Mitsuko, vitamin C content of the fruit was much higher than that of Hayward. In A. arguta fruit, the ratio of L-ascorbic acid to total ascorbic acid tended to be higher than that of other species. 相似文献

Measurements of serum fructosamine, glycated hemoglobin, and glycated albumin (GA) are increasingly used to complement serum glucose concentration for better management of diabetes mellitus. Fructosamine tests are currently not performed in veterinary medicine in Japan. As such, the measurement of GA may serve as a replacement test. Therefore, in the current study, serum GA and fructosamine were evaluated for a positive correlation in dogs, and, depending on the correlation, a reference range of GA percentage would also be determined from healthy control dogs. The degree of glycemic control in diabetic dogs was determined by fructosamine concentration. A positive correlation between GA and fructosamine was observed with both normal and diabetic animals. In addition, the reference interval of serum GA percentage in control dogs was determined to be 11.4-11.9% (95% confidence interval). Interestingly, no significant difference in serum GA percentages was observed between samples from diabetic dogs with excellent glycemic control and control dogs. However, good, fair, and poor glycemic control diabetic dogs resulted in a significant increase in serum GA percentages in comparison with control dogs. These results suggest that serum GA may be a useful diagnostic indicator, substituting for fructosamine, to monitor glycemic control in diabetic dogs. 相似文献

Abstract The concentrations of K+, Na+, and proline and the ratio of K+ to Na+ (K+ / Na+) were analyzed in NaCl-unadapted and NaCl-adapted tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) cells in suspension culture. At 3 to 5 d after inoculation, the NaCl-unadapted cells cultured in 100 mmol L?1 NaCl saline culture medium (Na100 medium) accumulated 28.7 mmol L?1 proline with a low ratio of K+ to Na+ (= 2.8) and the NaCl-adapted cells cultured in the Na100 medium contained 6.28 mmol L?1 proline with a high K+ / Na+ ratio (≧ 7.5). The contents of amino acids for the NaCl-adapted cells in the Na100 medium were similar to those for the NaCl-unadapted cells in a modified LS medium (standard medium). At 14 d after inoculation, the NaCl-unadapted cells in the Na100 medium contained 4.77 mmol L?1 proline and restored the K+ / Na+ ratio from 2.8 to 6.2. These results indicate the presence of a negative correlation between the K+ / Na+ ratio and proline accumulation and suggest that a balance between the K+ / Na+ ratio and proline accumulation may be the factor involved in determining the salt tolerance of plant cells. 相似文献

This study examined the difference in dog owning between Japan and the United States, and the effect of these
differences on dogs’ behavioral characteristics. Behavioral evaluations of privately-owned dogs were obtained
by using online questionnaire. We compared background and demographic information from the two countries and
analyzed the effects of these differences on behavioral characteristics in dogs. The results indicated that
there was a bias in the dog breeds kept in Japan compared to the United States and that Japanese dogs’ body
weight was lower than the US dogs. The main source of dog acquisition was pet stores in Japan and breeders
and/or shelters in the United States. Multiple linear regression analysis found that Japanese dogs showed more
aggression to household members and higher energy, restlessness and fear of non-social stimuli than US dogs,
while US dogs showed more fear of unfamiliar persons, separation-related behavior and excitability. US dogs
also showed higher levels of trainability and attachment to owners. The lower dog’s body weight was, the
higher the behavioral scores except for trainability were. When dogs that were obtained under 3 months of age
were analyzed, the younger the dogs were when their owners obtained them, the higher the scores on some
behavioral problem factors were. The higher rates of problem behaviors among Japanese dogs compared with US
dogs suggest that the preference for small breed dogs and poor early development environment influenced the

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) solutions were evaluated for their virucidal ability against a low pathogenic avian influenza virus (AIV), H7N1. HOCl solutions containing 50, 100 and 200 ppm chlorine (pH 6) or their sprayed solutions (harvested in dishes placed at 1 or 30 cm distance between the spray nozzle and dish) were mixed with the virus with or without organic materials (5% fetal bovine serum: FBS). Under plain diluent conditions (without FBS), harvested solutions of HOCl after spraying could decrease the AIV titer by more than 1,000 times, to an undetectable level (< 2.5 log10TCID50/ml) within 5 sec, with the exception of the 50 ppm solution harvested after spraying at the distance of 30 cm. Under the dirty conditions (in the presence of 5% FBS), they lost their virucidal activity. When HOCl solutions were sprayed directly on the virus on rayon sheets for 10 sec, the solutions of 100 and 200 ppm could inactivate AIV immediately after spraying,
while 50 ppm solution required at least 3 min of contact time. In the indirect spray form, after 10 sec of spraying, the lids of the dishes were opened to expose the virus on rayon sheets to HOCl. In this form, the 200 ppm solution inactivated AIV within 10 min of contact, while 50 and 100 ppm could not inactivate it. These data suggest that HOCl can be used in spray form to inactivate AIV at the farm level. 相似文献
