An 8-year-old female Persian cat was brought in for evaluation of chronic vomiting. The presence of opaque enteric foreign bodies and intestinal obstruction along with azotaemia, hyperphosphataemia, moderate anaemia and peritoneal fluid were revealed following appropriate diagnostic work-up. Exploratory laparotomy confirmed jejunoileal dilation, ileocaecal stenosis, and numerous foreign objects in the jejunoileum. These foreign objects and ileocaecal stenosis were surgically removed, and intestinal resection and anastomosis was performed. The patient recovered favourably. Analysis revealed that the foreign objects were composed of calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate. Intestinal inflammation and stenosis secondary to enterolithiasis may have developed following ingestion of cat litter or a previous unrelated surgical intervention. We were unable to delineate the inciting pathogenesis in this particular case.  相似文献

Mitral valve repair is one of the treatment options for mitral regurgitation. Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) is a polymer that has been widely used in cardiovascular surgery. In this case series, we report the autopsy and histological findings in 6 dogs that underwent cardiopulmonary bypass for mitral annuloplasty using ePTFE sheets and chordoplasty using ePTFE sutures.From May 2005 to October 2009, 3 female and 3 male dogs with severe mitral regurgitation underwent mitral valve repair. This case series included 3 Cavalier King Charles spaniels, 2 Maltese, and 1 Shih Tzu. The survival period after surgery was 19–72 (35 ± 19) months.In all the cases, autopsy revealed that the ePTFE sheets and sutures were not damaged and well integrated into the surrounding highly differentiated, connective tissues. Low-power microscopy revealed that in all cases, the tissues surrounding the ePTFE sheet in the mitral valve annulus had almost completely been covered by granulation tissue. No inflammatory infiltrate or thrombogenesis was observed around the ePTFE in any of the cases.There was no evidence of reactive changes in the region surrounding the ePTFE. These results suggest that ePTFE has excellent tissue compatibility and durability and can be effectively used for canine mitral valve repair.  相似文献

The yields and properties of oil and gas fractions coproduced during carbonization of larch wood loaded with Ni 2%, Ni 2%+Ca 1%, and Ni 4% and without catalyst (None) at 700°–900°C were examined to clarify the catalytic effect in terms of conversion into fluid fuels. The net calorific value of oil occurred mainly below 500°C and increased in the order None < Ni 2% < Ni 4% < Ni 2%+Ca 1%, while the yield decreased in this order. The same order held for the production of gases enriched with hydrogen at 500°–700°C. Even above 800°C, markedly promoted evolution of hydrogen took place for all catalyst systems. These observations confirmed the effectiveness of nickel-catalyzed carbonization at 900°C, particularly Ni 2%+Ca 1%, for both upgrading of oil and gaseous fractions, although the quality of oil was not satisfactory. The catalysis of nickel with and without calcium is discussed on the basis of the modified Broid-Shafizadeh scheme, and the scheme was altered to adapt to the high temperature region where oil was no longer produced. Knots have been considered an undesirable visual feature of lumber. To clarify the essence of this visual undesirability, eye-tracking data from 20 subjects, who freely observed 55 images of wood wall panels, were recorded and distribution maps of eye-fixation pauses were composed. These maps were compared with the arrangement of knots on each knotty wall panel image and the visual inducement of knots was evaluated using a new numerical index of pausing probability. The present study is the first to objectively quantify the visual inducement of knots. In addition, the subjective noticeability of knots and ten visual impressions of each wood panel image were investigated by a sensory evaluation. There was a very clear linear relationship between the visual inducement of knots and the subjective noticeability of knots. A correlation analysis suggested that many visual impressions of wood wall panels were influenced by a complementary effect between the subjective noticeability of knots and the visual inducement of knots. The visual impact of knots was masked to some extent by special visual stimuli such as deep red grooves on the wood wall panels. Two detection methods combining loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) and a bait trap were developed to detect Pythium helicoides in greenhouses containing roses, miniature roses, and poinsettias in hydroponic culture systems. In “Bait-LAMP”, a crude extract derived from perilla seeds as the bait was used in the LAMP reaction, whereas in the “Bait culture-LAMP”, a crude extract of mycelia grown out from perilla seeds onto Pythium-selective medium served as the bait. The two methods are simple and rapid for practical monitoring of P. helicoides in hydroponic culture systems.  相似文献

The present study evaluated the effects of genetic backgrounds on the developmental competence and thermotolerance of bovine in vitro‐produced (IVP) embryos. First, Holstein (Hol) and Japanese Black (JB) oocytes were fertilized with sperm from Hol, JB and a thermotolerant breed (Brahman), and in vitro development was evaluated when the embryos were exposed to heat shock on Day 2 (Day 0 = day of fertilization). Sperm genetic backgrounds affected the developmental competence in controls (P < 0.05). Second, the effect of sperm pre‐incubation for 4 h on subsequent in vitro fertilization was assessed using different sperm genetic backgrounds. The pre‐incubation of sperm did not decrease the embryonic development regardless of the breed of the sperm. A milder heat shock (40.0°C) effect on parthenotes (Hol and JB) and IVP embryos were evaluated. JB parthenotes showed developmental arrest after Day 4, and the rate of development to the blastocyst stage decreased by heat shock, but not in Hol parthenotes. Heat shock decreased developmental competence after cleavage of IVP embryos regardless of genetic background. The thermotolerance of IVP embryos would be controlled by both maternal and paternal factors but genetic involvement was still unclear. Further evaluation is needed to reveal the genetic contribution to thermotolerance.  相似文献

Fucoxanthin (Fx) is a marine carotenoid found in edible brown seaweeds. We previously reported that dietary Fx metabolite into fucoxanthinol (FxOH), attenuates the weight gain of white adipose tissue of diabetic/obese KK-Ay mice. In this study, to evaluate anti-diabetic effects of Fx, we investigated improving the effect of insulin resistance on the diabetic model of KK-Ay mice. Furthermore, preventing the effect of FxOH on low-grade chronic inflammation related to oxidative stress was evaluated on 3T3-L1 adipocyte cells and a RAW264.7 macrophage cell co-culture system. A diet containing 0.1% Fx was fed to diabetic model KK-Ay mice for three weeks, then glucose tolerance was observed. Fx diet significantly improved glucose tolerance compared with the control diet group. In in vitro studies, FxOH showed suppressed tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) mRNA expression and protein levels in a co-culture of adipocyte and macrophage cells. These findings suggest that Fx ameliorates glucose tolerance in the diabetic model mice. Furthermore, FxOH, a metabolite of Fx, suppresses low-grade chronic inflammation in adipocyte cells.  相似文献

Quantifying resource selection is of primary interest in animal ecology. Many analyses of resource selection assume spatial and temporal independence of the sampling unit. Autocorrelation between observations, which is a general property of ecological variables, causes difficulties for most standard statistical procedures of resource selection because autocorrelated data violate the assumption of independence. To overcome this problem, we develop a mixed-effects model to estimate resource selection functions from data that are autocorrelated because of unobserved grouping behavior by animals. In the application of the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm, the computation of the conditional expectation of the complete-data log-likelihood function does not have a closed-form solution requiring numerical integration. A Monte Carlo EM algorithm with Gibbs sampling can be used effectively in such situations to find exact maximum likelihood estimates. We propose a simple automated Monte Carlo EM algorithm with multiple sequences in which the Monte Carlo sample size is increased when the EM step is swamped by Monte Carlo errors.We demonstrate that the model can detect inherent autocorrelation and provide reasonable variance estimates when applied to nocturnal bird migration data. This approach could also be applied to ecological processes with various types of spatially and temporally autocorrelated data, circumventing serious problems caused by dangerous pseudoreplication.  相似文献

Fluorochrome staining with chromomycin A3 (CMA) was used to characterize and compare the CMA banding patterns of chromosomes of 17 species from 13 genera of Aurantioideae, which is one of the seven subfamilies of Rutaceae. All species used in this study had 2n = 18 chromosomes. These chromosomes were classified into five types based on the number and position of CMA-positive bands; B: one telomeric and one proximal band, C: two telomeric bands, D: one telomeric band, E: without bands and Dst: type D with a satellite chromosome. Each species possessed two or four types of chromosomes and unique CMA banding patterns. The CMA banding patterns were 6D + 12E in Clausena anisata (Willd.) Hook. f.,1C + 3D + 14E in Murraya koenigii (L.) Spreng., 1C + 11D + 6E in Murraya paniculata (L.) Jack, 1B + 1C + 10D + 6E in Merrillia caloxylon (Ridl.) Swing., 1C + 9D + 7E + 1Dst in Paramignya lobata Burkill, 2C + 5D + 11E in Severinia buxifolia (Poir.) Tenore, 5D + 13E in Hesperethusa crenulata (Roxb.) Roem., 16D + 2E in Citropsis gabunensis (Engl.) Swing. et M. Kell, 14D + 4E in Citropsis schweinfurthii (Engl.) Swing. et M. Kell, 8D + 10E in Atalantia monophylla DC., 1C + 3D + 14E in Atalantia ceylanica (Arn.) Oliv., 2D + 16E in Atalantia roxburghiana Hook. f., 18E in Swinglea glutinosa (Blanco) Merr., 2D + 16E in Aegle marmelos (L.) Corr., 4D + 14E in Afraegle paniculata (Schum.) Engl., 2B + 2D + 13E + 2Dst in Feronia limonia (L.) Swing. and 3B + 9D + 6E in Feroniella oblata Swing. The advanced genera in each tribe and subtribe such as Merrillia and Feroniella showed heterochromatin (CMA-positive bands) rich chromosome configuration in general. Swinglea glutinosa without heterochromatin rich chromosome, which is considered to be the most primitive chromosome configuration, seems to be the key genus for clarifying the evolution of the tribe Citreae.  相似文献

Although canine osteosarcoma is one of the most malignant, aggressive and lethal neoplasms originating from undifferentiated bone cells, it may retain some capacity for normal differentiation. The purpose of this study was to ascertain if the residual capacity for differentiation could be used to suppress its malignant properties. We tested the efficacy of vitamin D and retinoids in inducing differentiation and inhibiting growth of the POS canine osteosarcoma and four of its clonal cell lines, POS 14A (fibroblast type), POS 53B (chondroblast type), POS 53C (undifferentiated type) and POS 53D (osteoblastic type). Treatment with 10(-10)to 10(-8)M concentrations of calcitriol, OCT, cholecalciferol, all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and 9-cis retinoic acid for 48-120 hours changed the morphology of POS, POS 53B, POS 53C and POS 53D cells to cells that were elongated and spindle-shaped. Increased number of cytoplasmic organelles and pronounced nuclear activities were induced by concentrations of 10(-8)M and 10(-7)M for 120 hours. All drugs at concentrations of 10(-10)to 10(-8)M for 72 hours inhibited POS growth dose-dependently. OCT significantly reduced the cell number in all cell lines when used at concentrations between 10(-9)and 10(-8)M for 72 hours and exerted significant anti-proliferative effects for eight days culture. This study demonstrated that changed morphology and inhibition of growth was induced by treatment of the cells with these vitamins, that the loss of control of differentiation in the neoplasia was not irreversible and that these drugs may be useful in the clinic.  相似文献
