This study confirms that CO2 uptake of European conifers increases during needle maturation. Extensive investigations with grafts of several species show that this increase may even mask a deleterious effect of a weak SO2 stress. In plants which are not dependent on air-borne SO2 for S nutrition CO2 uptake was not favored by SO2. Peroxidase activity of tree foliage may be a valuable stress indication, particularly in areas with light air pollution. It is, however, not specific for air pollution and seems to be most suitable for “active” monitoring. 相似文献

Summary By means of gas analyzers the gas exchange of leaves of black poplar was measured before and during 4 days after treatments with Gamalo (containing Lindane) and Perfekthion (Dimethoate). Photosynthesis and transpiration of Gamalo sprayed leaves fell to 40% and 60%, respectively, of the original value within an hour. Respiration was not affected measurably. Twenty hours later gas exchange was practically normal again. The observed effect is ascribed mainly to the volatile phase of Lindane which most likely caused a partial stomatal closure. The systemically acting Perfekthion caused but a slight, statistically not significant reduction of photosynthesis 2–4 days after treatment. With both treatments young leaves behaved like mature ones.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the onset and duration of neuromuscular blockade of rocuronium bromide and its associated haemodynamic effects at three doses in healthy horses. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized experimental study. ANIMALS: Seven adult horses aged 3-20 (mean 10.3) years and weighing 466 +/- 44 (mean +/- SD) kg. METHODS: Horses were anaesthetized three times with at least 2 weeks between. They were pre-medicated with 0.6 mg kg(-1) xylazine and 0.01 mg kg(-1) butorphanol i.v.. Anaesthesia was induced with 2.2 mg kg(-1) ketamine and 0.1 mg kg(-1) diazepam i.v.. Following orotracheal intubation anaesthesia was maintained with isoflurane in 100% oxygen. Intermittent positive pressure ventilation was initiated and the horses were ventilated at a respiratory rate (fr) of 4-8 breaths minute(-1). Neuromuscular function was monitored with an acceleromyograph. The peroneal nerve was stimulated with train-of-four (TOF) mode at 2 Hz every 15 seconds. Each horse received, in randomly assigned order, one of the three doses of rocuronium: 0.2 mg kg(-1) (D02), 0.4 mg kg(-1) (D04) or 0.6 mg kg(-1) (D06) i.v.. Lag time, onset time, time of no response, duration of action and the TOF ratio 0.7 and 0.9 were measured. Recovery time (T1(25-75)) was calculated. Vital parameters were recorded at 5-minute intervals on a standard anaesthetic record form. RESULTS: Rocuronium produced a dose-dependent duration of action in isoflurane-anaesthetized horses. 100% block was observed in D04 and D06 but not in D02, in which the maximum decrease of the first twitch of TOF attained was 91.5 +/- 16.5%. Time to T1(25) was 13.1 +/- 5.5 minutes, 38.6 +/- 10.1 minutes and 55 +/- 9.8 minutes in D02, D04 and D06 respectively. There was a significantly shorter time for TOFR 0.9 with 0.2 mg kg(-1) compared with 0.4 and 0.6 mg kg(-1) rocuronium. T1(25-75) in D04 and D6 was not statistically significantly different. Heart rate, systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressure increased slightly during the observation period. CONCLUSION: Rocuronium is an effective nondepolarizing muscle relaxant in horses under isoflurane anaesthesia. It had a dose-dependent onset and duration of action. Rocuronium did not produce significant changes in the measured cardiovascular parameters. 相似文献

In order to precisely assess the role of agroforestry for the conservation of (agro-)biological diversity there is a need
to adjust sampling methods used in plant sociology. This study is on the contribution of agroforestry land use to the in-situ conservation of indigenous trees within a typical East-African smallholder farming system in Western Kenya. A modified approach
to measuring species richness and abundance is presented. The selection of tree-rich structures was done according to management
patterns rather than considering syntaxonomic classifications from the vegetation science point of view. This approach, which
is better suited to the strongly human-influenced vegetation of agroecosystems, employs between-management unit diversity
measures to help evaluate abundance and constancy of species in particular management units.
The predominant off-farm vegetation patterns are riverine forests, rocky hillsides, hedgerows, wooded grassland relicts, woodlands or colline forest
relicts and tree groves whereas the noticeable tree-rich on-farm management units are homegardens, homesteads, life fences, coffee- and banana-groves and annual cropping fields. 98% out
of all indigenous tree species known from Bungoma, occur in off-farm lands. 53% of the indigenous tree species occur in tree rich on-farm management units while 47% of the indigenous trees are dependent on the maintenance of off-farm lands. Hedgerows embody the most promising secondary vegetation structure that shows ample potential to accommodate a wide
range of indigenous perennial species outside the natural vegetation formations. The pattern of distribution of various vegetation
structures, and the mixture with diverse tree-based on-farm plots are interesting features in regard to floristic and eco-diversity on a landscape level. In this respect, three areas
that show different population densities and distinct agro-historical conditions were compared. In regions of particular high
population density the degree of association of various functional land use forms and woodland structures – each characterised
by its own floristic make-up – is comparatively high. In contrast, in regions with less population but that were settled at
a later date, one encounters fewer stands of woody plants with lower numbers of species.
This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date. 相似文献

Peroxidase activity (p. a.) of several tree species was investigated in a forest influenced by F-containing exhalates of an aluminium smelter. P. a. increases with age of tissue, particularly under the influence of fluorides. It was used therefore to map the zone of plant reaction in apricot orchards in the vicinity of an aluminium smelter and it supplements foliar analysis. P. a. in foliage of white ash was used to determine whether exhaust of automotive traffic in the city of Zurich does affect vegetation. A significant increase of p. a. was found in the city although the plants did not show any symptoms of injury. P. a. thus is a very sensitive indicator of plant reaction to air pollutants and allows to detect “hidden” injury (no visible symptoms). 相似文献

Wood products are considered to contribute to the mitigation of carbon dioxide emissions. A critical gap in the life cycle
of wood products is to transfer the raw timber from the forest to the processing wood industry and, thus, the primary wood
products. Therefore, often rough estimates are used for this step to obtain total forestry carbon balances. The objectives
of this study were (1) to examine the fate of timber harvested in Thuringian state forests (central Germany), representing
a large, intensively managed forested region, and (2) to quantify carbon stocks and the lifetime of primary wood products
made from this timber. The analyses were based on the amount and assortments of actually sold timber, and production parameters
of the companies that bought and processed this timber. In addition, for coniferous stands of a selected Thuringian forest
district, we calculated potential effects of management, as expressed by different thinning regimes on wood products and their
lifetimes. Total annual timber sale of soft- and hardwoods from Thuringian state forests (195,000 ha) increased from about
136,893 t C (~0.7 t C ha−1 year−1) in 1996 to 280,194 t C (~1.4 t C ha−1 year−1) in 2005. About 47% of annual total timber harvest went into short-lived wood products with a mean residence time (MRT) < 25
years. Thirty-one per cent of the total harvest went into wood products with an MRT of 25–43 years, and only 22% was used
as construction wood and glued wood, products with the longest MRT (50 years). The average MRT of carbon in harvested wood
products was 20 years. Thinning from above throughout the rotation of spruce forests would lead to an average MRT in harvested
wood products of about 23 years, thinning from below of about 18 years. A comparison of our calculations with estimates that
resulted from the products module of the CO2FIX model (Nabuurs et al. 2001) demonstrates the influence of regional differences in forest management and wood processing industry on the lifetime of
harvested wood products. To our knowledge, the present study provides for the first time real carbon inputs of a defined forest
management unit to the wood product sector by linking data on raw timber production, timber sales and wood processing. With
this new approach and using this data, it should be possible to substantially improve the net-carbon balance of the entire
forestry sector. 相似文献

Food is physically manipulated by other materials during production processes, and therefore, food quality and safety are vital in processes where foods are in contact with various materials. Wooden frames were used for centuries for dried egg pasta trays; however, with the development of different materials, wood was slowly abandoned and replaced by plastic. Nevertheless, there are some hygienic considerations concerning plastic frames in the dried egg pasta making industry. In this study, plastic and wooden trays were analysed by swabbing (n?=?210) and evaluated in regard to total number of aerobic counts (TAC), Enterobacteriaceae, Escherichia coli, moulds, yeasts and Staphylococcus aureus using dry medium plates. The aims of the research were to (1) evaluate the total number of microorganisms on wood and plastic material used for pasta trays and (2) make a hygienic evaluation of analysed materials for application in the pasta industry. The research was aimed to answer the question, ‘Does the tray material and/or location of the swab sample influence the colony forming unit (CFU)/20?cm2?’ Results showed a statistical difference in CFU/20?cm2 for all bacterial determinations, except for E. coli which was not detected in swabs taken from wooden or plastic trays. This hygiene evaluation study supported the conclusion that the use of wood is appropriate in the food industry from a hygienic and technological point of view. 相似文献

Pinus radiata trees showed significantly reduced basal area increments and increased latewood/earlywood ratios, when their stem was charred by surface fires even if no needle damage occurred. An interaction of fire damage and precipitation on growth was observed.Context
Heat from forest fires is able to penetrate beyond the bark layer and damage or completely kill a tree’s cambium. Short-term growth reductions following surface fires have been reported for some species. However, most studies have in common that they describe a compound effect of stem and foliage damage.Aims
This study investigated the impact of surface fires on the radial growth of Pinus radiata, where only the stem of trees was charred, while no needle damage was recorded. Methods
Tree ring measurements were performed on cores obtained at breast height. Analysis of variance and tests, based on annual basal area increment values were calculated to quantify pre- and post-fire growth differences of tree ring width and latewood/earlywood ratios. Results
The analysis revealed significant growth reductions following a surface fire on P. radiata in the year on which the fire occurred as well as in the following year. As a consequence of the fire, basal area increment and latewood/earlywood ratios were significantly reduced. An interaction of fire damage and precipitation on growth was observed. Conclusion
The obtained results show how fires without crown damage can affect growth and tree ring structure of P. radiata trees and indicate that stem char could be associated with a significant decrease in ring width and latewood/earlywood ratio.50.
