The composition of tree rings and soils was studied at several locations affected by smelting and transportation in the vicinity of Kitwe (Copperbelt, Zambia). The contents of cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and lead (Pb) and the 206Pb/207Pb isotope ratios in the tree rings were interpreted in relation to potential sources of contamination such as smelter production, acidification of the environment, soil composition, raw material processing, and atmospheric suspended particulate matter (SPM). The highest Co contents in the tree rings correspond to maximum ore production in the mid-1970s. Acidification through SO2 emissions is documented in the increased Mn contents from the mid-1980s. The isotopic composition of the tree rings of the studied tree species varies in the interval 1.16?C1.34 and the youngest parts of all the studied trees exhibit a low 206Pb/207Pb ratio (<1.17). The soil isotope composition varies in the range 206Pb/207Pb?=?1.18?C1.35. The Pb isotope composition in the soils and tree rings was formed by a combination of lithogenic Pb (206Pb/207Pb????1.3), Pb in processed ores (206Pb/207Pb????1.2), and SPM (automobile) Pb (206Pb/207Pb??1.1). As the soils in the distant region have high 206Pb/207Pb ratios (>1.3) in the whole profile and simultaneously the youngest parts of the tree rings of tree species growing in this soil have a low 206Pb/207Pb ratio (<1.17), it can be assumed that the Pb in the youngest parts of the tree species is derived from absorption of SPM Pb through the bark rather than root uptake. The absence of Pb with a low 206Pb/207Pb ratio in soils in the distant area is probably affected by fires in the herbaceous and bush undergrowth and plant litter, which prevents Pb from biomass from entering the soil and mobilize it back into the atmosphere. 相似文献

Despite the importance of soil organic matter (SOM), very few long‐term data concerning soil organic‐C dynamics are available for calibrating and evaluating C models. The long‐term 14C‐turnover field experiment, established in 1967 in Fuchsenbigl, Lower Austria, offers the unique opportunity to follow the fate of labeled C under different crop‐management systems (bare fallow, spring wheat, crop rotation) over a period of more than 35 y. Compared with the crop‐rotation and spring‐wheat treatments, the decline of total organic C was largest in the bare‐fallow treatments, because no significant C input has occurred since 1967. Nonetheless, the decline was not as fast as predicted with the original RothC‐26.3‐model decomposition rate constants. In this work, we therefore calibrated the Roth‐C‐26.3 model for the Pannonian climatic region based on the field‐experiment results. The main adjustment was in the decomposition rate constant for the humified soil C pool (HUM), which was set to 0.009 instead of 0.02 y–1 as determined in the original Rothamsted field trial. This resulted in a higher HUM pool in the calibrated model because of a longer turnover period (111 vs. 50 y). The modeled output based on the calibrated model fitted better to measured values than output obtained with the original Roth‐C‐26.3‐model parameters. Additionally, the original decomposition rate constant for resistant plant material (RPM) was changed from 0.3 to 0.6 y–1 to describe the decomposition of 14C‐labeled straw more accurately. Application of the calibrated model (modified HUM decomposition rate) to simulate removal of crop residues showed that this can entail a long‐term decline of SOM. Using TRIME-TDR for the determination of soil water dynamics on sandy soils In this study the suitability of the TRIME-TDR system for the determination of soil water content was analysed. For this purpose a period of three years with continuous data of soil water contents, measured by TRIME-TDR, and soil water suction measured by tensiometer were available. Additionally soil samples at different times were taken for gravimetric moisture analysis. The determinations of soil moisture with the TRIME-TDR is based on a new measuring technique. The soil water contents measured by TRIME-TDR were analysed by comparison with corresponding soil moisture values from gravimetric measurements of soil samples. The soil water contents determined by TRIME-TDR in comparison with gravimetric soil moisture values show an absolute mean error of 7.9 Vol%. In most cases the soil water contents measured by TRIME-TDR were distinctly higher than the corresponding soil moisture values from gravimetric measurements. After correcting the TRIME-TDR the absolute mean error was reduced to 2.5 Vol%. Due to the results of this study soil water contents measured by TRIME-TDR-technique cannot be used in hydrological or ecological studies without a check based on the comparison with gravimetric soil moisture values. 相似文献

Pyrolysis of soil humic acid yields a variety of products arising from heterogeneous materials associated to the humic structure and from this self. After acid hydrolysis most of the compounds related to proteins, polysaccharides and lignin dissappear. Adsorbed compounds such as fatty and dicarboxylic acids are released after methylation and subsequent pyrolysis. In addition pyrolysis produces aromatic and substituted aromatic hydrocarbons. All the identified pyrolysis products have also been isolated by different complex and time-consuming chemical degradations and solvent extraction procedures. The combined and separate effects of Cd and wood ash on Archaea from coniferous forest humus were studied in a microcosm experiment. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling of the denaturing gradient gel analysis of polymerase chain reaction amplified 0.9 kb 16S ribosomal DNA fragments revealed changes in archaeal communities due to the ash treatments. Cd with or without ash did not further influence the result. Representatives of the ash and control communities were cloned, grouped by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis and finally sequenced. When devising policies for financing private silvicultural operations on public forest land, government agencies should consider carefully the benefits and costs of alternative arrangements and how they arc likely to affect tenure holders' behavior. Three general methods of achieving silvicultural objectives arc discussed — the creation of incentives for private voluntary expenditures, reimbursement by governments of expenditures on approved or required silvicultural operations, and required silvicultural operations at the tenure holder's expense.Private firms will only invest voluntarily in silviculture on public lands if they have adequate security of tenure and hold sufficient equity in the timber values resulting from their activities. If firms' silvicultural costs arc reimbursed, their behavior will depend on the extent of reimbursement and whether they have a financial interest in the outcomes of their reimbursed activities. Generally, reimbursement of expenditures must be supported by minimum performance standards and costly monitoring and enforcement procedures. If silvicultural operations are required at the tenure holder's expense, firms will only undertake silviculture to avoid penalties and have a strong incentive to achieve required standards at minimum cost. More stringent monitoring and enforcement procedures may be necessary than if costs arc reimbursed.The impact of policy alternatives is illustrated by means of a survey of silvicultural expenditures on two forest tenure types in British Columbia. 相似文献

Because of its requirement for signaling by multiple cytokines, Janus kinase 3 (JAK3) is an excellent target for clinical immunosuppression. We report the development of a specific, orally active inhibitor of JAK3, CP-690,550, that significantly prolonged survival in a murine model of heart transplantation and in cynomolgus monkeys receiving kidney transplants. CP-690,550 treatment was not associated with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or lymphoproliferative disease. On the basis of these preclinical results, we believe JAK3 blockade by CP-690,550 has potential for therapeutically desirable immunosuppression in human organ transplantation and in other clinical settings. 相似文献

ABSTRACT One would expect foliar applied phosphorus (P) to have higher use efficiencies than when applied to the soil, but limited information is available concerning this. Experiments were conducted in 2002, 2003, and 2004 to determine the effect of foliar applications of P on winter wheat grain yields, P uptake, and use efficiency. Twelve treatments containing varying foliar P rates (0, 1, 2, and 4 kg ha? 1 in 2002 and 2003 and additional 8, 12, 16, and 20 kg ha? 1 in 2004) with and without pre-plant rates of 30 kg ha? 1 were evaluated. Foliar applications of P at Feekes 7 generally increased grain yields and P uptake versus no foliar P. Use efficiency was higher when P was applied at Feekes 10.54. Results from this study suggested that low rates of foliar applied P might correct mid-season P deficiency in winter wheat, and that might result in higher P use efficiencies. 相似文献
