Purpose

This study aimed at investigating correlations between heavy metal concentrations in mosses and modelled deposition values as well as other site-specific and regional characteristics to determine which factors primarily affect cadmium, lead and mercury concentrations in mosses. The resulting relationships could potentially be used to enhance the spatial resolution of heavy metal deposition maps across Europe.

Materials and methods

Modelled heavy metal deposition data and data on the concentration of heavy metals in naturally growing mosses were integrated into a geographic information system and analysed by means of bivariate rank correlation analysis and multivariate decision trees. Modelled deposition data were validated annually with deposition measurements at up to 63 EMEP measurement stations within the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP), and mosses were collected at up to 7,000 sites at 5-year intervals between 1990 and 2005.

Results and discussion

Moderate to high correlations were found between cadmium and lead concentrations in mosses and modelled atmospheric deposition of these metals: Spearman rank correlation coefficients were between 0.62 and 0.67, and 0.67 and 0.73 for cadmium and lead, respectively (p?<?0.001). Multivariate decision tree analyses showed that cadmium and lead concentrations in mosses were primarily determined by the atmospheric deposition of these metals, followed by emissions of the metals. Low to very low correlations were observed between mercury concentrations in mosses and modelled atmospheric deposition of mercury. According to the multivariate analyses, spatial variations of the mercury concentration in mosses was primarily associated with the sampled moss species and not with the modelled deposition, but regional differences in the atmospheric chemistry of mercury and corresponding interactions with the moss may also be involved.

Conclusions

At least for cadmium and lead, concentrations in mosses are a valuable tool in determining and mapping the spatial variation in atmospheric deposition across Europe at a high spatial resolution. For mercury, more studies are needed to elucidate interactions of different chemical species with the moss.  相似文献

The Northern Patagonian Andean range shared by Chile and Argentina has numerous glacial oligotrophic lakes protected in a series of National Parks. Recent baseline surveys indicated that concentrations in muscle and liver tissues from various fish species from across Nahuel Huapi and Los Alerces National Parks in Argentina were comparable or higher than similar fish species from other parts of the world. As a result, Lake Moreno, in Nahuel Huapi National Park, was chosen to investigate multiple element sinks, trends, and transfer in a representative Patagonia aquatic food web. The metals and metalloids Ag, As, Ba, Br, Cs, Co, Cr, Fe, Hg, K, Na, Rb, Se, and Zn were analyzed in three size plankton fractions, submerged macrophytes, biofilm, insect larvae, amphipods, decapods, gastropods (snails), annelids (earthworms), and forage fish. Except for nanoplankton (10–53 μm; small-celled algae, rotifers) and microplankton (53–200 μm; larger algae, ciliates, zooplankton nauplii), which share elemental compositional similarities, each taxon category had its own distinctive compositional pattern, revealed by principal component analysis. Nano- and microplankton tend to be relatively elevated in some metals, including As, Co, Cr, Fe, Hg, Zn, and Rb, followed by biofilm. Shredder-scrapper Trichoptera (caddisflies) have higher concentration of most of the studied elements than other insect larvae taxa, especially carnivorous Odonata (Anisoptera, dragonflies), which were associated with lower elemental contents. Those trends point to an overall tendency for biodiminishing element concentrations with trophic level in the benthos of Lake Moreno.  相似文献

Drought is an important environmental factor in Mediterranean ecosystems affecting seedling recruitment, productivity or susceptibility to fires and pathogens. Studying water use efficiency in these environments is crucial due to its adaptive value allowing trees to cope with low water availability. We studied the phenotypic variability and genetic control of intrinsic water use efficiency (WUE(i)) and related traits in a full-sib family of Pinus pinaster under drought imposition. We detected significant differences in WUE(i) between clones of the same family and moderate heritability estimates that indicate some degree of genetic control over this trait. Stomatal conductance to water vapor was the trait most affected by drought imposition and it showed the strongest influence in WUE(i). Stomatal conductance to water vapor and specific leaf area (SLA) were the traits with highest heritabilities and they showed a significant genetic correlation with WUE(i), suggesting that selection of needles with low SLA values will improve WUE(i) in this species by reducing water losses through stomatal control.  相似文献

In order to investigate haemotropic Mycoplasma (formerly Eperythrozoon) infection of goats, blood samples and blood-sucking lice (Linognathus stenopsis) were collected in two goat herds. DNA was extracted from 20 blood samples and from 49 lice allocated to six pools according to host individuals. Haemoplasma infection was detected in four goats by real-time PCR. From the sample with the highest bacterial load the simultaneous presence of M. ovis and 'Candidatus M. haemoovis' was demonstrated by cloning and sequencing. Louse pools were haemoplasma negative, including those from bacteraemic animals. However, not only were Anaplasma inclusion bodies seen in blood smears from goats, but relevant PCR-positivity was also detected among lice. This is the first report of a molecular investigation on caprine haemoplasmas, including analysis of their bloodsucking lice. In summary, goats are susceptible to both molecularly characterised ovine haemoplasmas. On the other hand, goat sucking lice (L. stenopsis) do not appear to be potential vectors of these agents.  相似文献

A 63‐day experiment was done to study the effects of four levels (5, 10, 20 and 50 g/kg) of encapsulated organic salts (Na‐acetate, Na‐butyrate, Na‐lactate and Na‐propionate) on the growth indices and haemato‐immunological responses of crayfish Astacus leptodactylus leptodactylus (4.38 ± 0.08 g). Crayfish were distributed at 51 1,000‐L tanks (17 treatments at triplicate). The highest values of final weight (27.86 g), specific growth rate (2.94% body weight per day) and survival rate (96%) were observed in the crayfish fed the 20 g/kg of encapsulated Na‐propionate diet (p < .05). The highest activities of phenoloxidase (7.4 U/min), superoxide dismutase (7.80 U/min) and lysozyme (9.40 U/min) were observed in the gut of crayfish fed the 20 g/kg of encapsulated Na‐propionate diet (p < .05), as well as the highest activities of alkaline protease (10.70 U/mg), lipase (9.10 U/mg), amylase (9.60 U/mg) and the lactobacillus count (p < .05). Broken line regression model of SGR and phenoloxidase activity suggested that the optimum dietary levels of encapsulated Na‐acetate, Na‐butyrate, Na‐lactate and Na‐propionate could be 30.7, 31.8, 31.4 and 33.5 g/kg, respectively, in crayfish reared in culture conditions.  相似文献

Couepia is a genus distributed in tropical regions of America. The nut of some Couepia species is used as fresh fruit and oil source for local communities. Despite its critical situation of conservation and its economic potential, there is a lack of information on the genetic variability of Couepia species. This study examines AFLP variation among 40 accessions of Couepia collected in the Colombian Amazonian region, representing two species: Couepia dolichopoda and Couepia subcordata. The individuals were examined for 96 markers generated from four EcoRI/MseI primer pairs, with 80% polymorphism across all accessions studied. According to cluster analysis, 40 accessions were grouped into two major clusters, corresponding to the two species analyzed, except one case whose situation is discussed. In C. dolichopoda accessions, significant correlation between the clustering pattern and the geographical origin was detected; the extent of variation within and among its collect sites was examined by AMOVA. The knowledge about the genetic variability of the accessions examined contributes to development of Couepia conservational efforts.  相似文献

Fresh sierra fish (Scomberomorus sierra) fillets were packed in low-density polyethylene films with butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT-LDPE) added. Fillets packed in LDPE with no BHT were used as controls (LDPE). The packed fillets were stored at -25 degrees C for 120 days in which the film released 66.5% of the antioxidant. The influence of the antioxidant on lipid and protein quality, lipid oxidation, muscle structure changes, and shear-force resistance was recorded. As compared to LDPE films, fillets packed in BHT-LDPE films showed lower lipid oxidation, thiobarbituric acid values (4.20 +/- 0.52 vs 11.95 +/- 1.06 mg malonaldehyde/kg), peroxide values (7.20 +/- 1.38 vs 15.15 +/- 1.48 meq/kg), and free fatty acids (7.98 +/- 0.43 vs 11.83 +/- 1.26% of oleic acid). Fillets packed in BHT-LDPE films showed less tissue damage and lost less firmness than fillets packed in LDPE. A significant relationship between lipid oxidation and texture was detected (R2 adjusted, 0.70-0.73). BHT-LDPE films may be used not only to prevent lipid oxidation but also to minimize protein damage to prolong the shelf life of sierra fish.  相似文献

Posttranslational arginylation is critical for mouse embryogenesis, cardiovascular development, and angiogenesis, but its molecular effects and the identity of proteins arginylated in vivo are unknown. We found that beta-actin was arginylated in vivo to regulate actin filament properties, beta-actin localization, and lamella formation in motile cells. Arginylation of beta-actin apparently represents a critical step in the actin N-terminal processing needed for actin functioning in vivo. Thus, posttranslational arginylation of a single protein target can regulate its intracellular function, inducing global changes on the cellular level, and may contribute to cardiovascular development and angiogenesis.  相似文献
