- 1. Dolphins are often claimed to compete with fisheries, including through removal of substantial biomass. To calculate the biomass removed by fisheries and the degree of resource overlap with dolphins in a coastal area of Greece, estimates of dolphin abundance based on photographic capture–recapture were combined with an assessment of fishing effort and catch.
- 2. The estimated total biomass consumed annually by local dolphin populations – 15 short‐beaked common dolphins and 42 common bottlenose dolphins – was 15.5 and 89.8 tonnes, respectively. The total biomass removed by the local fishing fleet (307 fishing boats) was 3469.2 tonnes, i.e. about 33 times greater than that removed by dolphins.
- 3. Dolphins removed 2.9% of the total biomass, fisheries 97.1%. Nine purse seiners (representing only 3% of the active fishing fleet) were responsible for 31.9% of biomass removal. Similarity of biomass composition between dolphins and fisheries was expressed by a Pianka index of 0.46 for common dolphins and 0.66 for bottlenose dolphins.
- 4. Overlap differed according to fishing gear. Common dolphin overlap was higher with purse seiners (0.82), and lower with beach seiners (0.31), bottom trawlers (0.11) and trammel boats (0.06). There was virtually no overlap with longliners (0.02). Bottlenose dolphin overlap was higher with trammel boats (0.89) and bottom trawlers (0.75), and lower with longliners (0.38), purse seiners (0.24) and beach seiners (0.18). There was minimal overlap (0.12) between the two dolphin species.
- 5. This study suggests that ecological interactions between dolphins and fisheries in this coastal area have minor effects on fisheries. Conversely, prey depletion resulting from overfishing can negatively affect dolphins. Fisheries management measures consistent with national and EU legislation are proposed to ensure sustainability and to protect marine biodiversity. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Production of triploid turbot is a relevant goal for the aquaculture industry due to the benefits associated with their sterility and growth. In order for a better understanding of the final quality of the species, muscle cellularity and quality parameters of the flesh were studied in seven diploid and seven triploid turbot after sexual maturation. White muscle cellularity was evaluated throughout white muscle cross‐sectional area from the epaxial left muscle section of each fish. To ascertain the flesh quality, several physico‐chemical parameters (moisture, ash, protein, total fat, fatty acids and minerals) were analysed, and textural mechanical properties (springiness, hardness, chewiness, cohesiveness, gumminess and adhesiveness) were determined objectively with a texturometer. Muscle cellularity was different between both groups, such that muscle fibre density was higher for diploid specimens (P < 0.001) and muscle fibres diameters were higher for triploids (P < 0.001). Both ploidy groups showed no significant differences in moisture, ash, protein and total fat content (P > 0.05). All textural properties analysed showed no significant differences between both ploidy groups (P > 0.05). In both ploidy groups, fibre density and fibre diameter showed no significant correlations (P > 0.05) with textural parameters such as springiness, cohesiveness, chewiness and adhesiveness. Ploidy did not affect fatty acid composition, with the exception of eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5ω3) which was higher in the triploid group. No significant differences (P > 0.05) existed between diploid and triploid turbot in content of all minerals analysed. According to our results, the ploidy status determines significant variations on muscle cellularity but does not influence the flesh quality of the turbot. 相似文献

Detection of neutralizing antibodies in postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS)-affected and non-PMWS-affected pigs 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The notion that postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS)-affected pigs develop an impaired humoral response against porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) has been reported in several studies. However, little information is available regarding the presence of neutralizing antibodies (NA) in PCV2-infected pigs and their role in the pathogenesis of the disease. The aim of the present work was to further characterize the humoral response, and in particular the production of NA, in pigs with different PCV2-infection status. Seventy-two conventional pigs from different farms were classified into three groups based on PCV2 infection and clinico-pathological status, namely: PCV2-negative, non-PMWS PCV2-positive and PMWS-affected animals. In addition, 9-week old pigs from an experimental infection (6 controls and 14 PCV2-inoculated pigs) were also studied. NA and total PCV2 antibodies (TA) as well as viral load in serum were determined and correlated with the clinico-pathological status of pigs. Results indicated that PMWS-affected pigs had lower NA titres, if any, than healthy animals. NA titres were also inversely correlated with PCV2 load in serum. NA and TA titres were positively correlated; however, correlation differed among infection status, being lower in PCV2-positive pigs. Also, the diagnostic performance of each test was evaluated, indicating that the combination of viral neutralization and quantitative PCR in serum was useful to discard PMWS (specificity 92%). In experimentally infected animals, the evolution of NA paralleled the course TA, although a slight delay in NA production was seen in some animals. The increase of NA coincided with the drop in viral load. Results from this work further support that PMWS-affected pigs show an impaired humoral immune response and, particularly, an inefficient NA response against PCV2. 相似文献

Hemotropic mycoplasmas (aka hemoplasmas) are the causative agents of infectious anemia in numerous mammalian species. Originally known as Haemobartonella and Eperythrozoon species, these organisms have been reclassified within the genus Mycoplasma. The development of new molecular assays has expanded our knowledge of this heterogeneous group of agents and allowed us to study their epidemiology and pathogenesis. The present review summarizes recently gained insights into feline hemotropic mycoplasmas, formerly known as Haemobartonella felis. Besides the two initially identified feline hemoplasma species, Mycoplasma haemofelis and Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum, we discovered a third novel hemoplasma in a Swiss pet cat; preliminary results suggest that the pathogenic potential of the latter agent depends on cofactors. In applying PCR-based assays, feline hemoplasma infections have been documented in domestic cats and wild felids worldwide. Differences between the three hemoplasmas in regard to response to antibiotic treatment and establishment of a carrier status have been reported. Additionally, besides an ostensible vector-borne transmission, direct transmission by aggressive interaction of cats or interspecies transmission might play a role in the epidemiology of these organisms. Based on a potential vector-borne and interspecies transmission, a zoonotic potential of hemoplasmas should be further investigated. 相似文献

RT-PCR was used to detect canine distemper virus (CDV) RNA in clotted blood from Argentine domestic dogs. The NP gene was detected in 73 out of 99 blood samples analyzed. The deduced amino acid sequence of these gene fragments showed 100% identity with the sequence of other wild-type and vaccine strains. A fragment of the hemagglutinin gene was amplified from 24 (32.9%) of the NP-RNA-positive clinical specimens. These H fragments were further analyzed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and sequencing. A single NdeI site was detected in all 24 wild-type strains but was absent in the vaccine strains. Phylogenetic analysis of the partial hemagglutinin amino acid sequences showed close clustering for local strains, clearly distinct from vaccine strains and other wild-type foreign CDV strains. One of the local strains, Arg 23, branched out of the root of the Argentine clade, close to the European strains, suggesting that two different pathogenic CDV genotypes are currently circulating in Argentina, one of them clearly predominant. 相似文献

Despite the recent reports of feline leishmaniosis from Southern Europe, cats are still regarded as unusual Leishmania hosts. A cat found chronically infected with Leishmania was submitted to xenodiagnosis. After being sedated, the animal was exposed to the bite of 100 laboratory-reared Phlebotomus perniciosus in a fine net cage for 90 min. Four out of 19 blood-fed sandflies (21%) showed motile promastigotes at the dissection. Parasites cultured from cat's lymph node and an infected fly were identical at PCR-RFLP genotyping and identified as Leishmania infantum MON-1, the main zymodeme responsible for human and canine leishmaniosis in Southern Europe. This is the first evidence of transmissibility of feline parasites to a proven vector, suggesting that cats may represent an additional domestic reservoir for L. infantum. 相似文献

Leishmaniasis is an important disease in widely dispersed regions of the world. In South America, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is mainly caused by Leishmania chagasi. The morbidity associated with the infection is high, and death may occur in some untreated patients. Treatment has been based upon pentavalent antimonial drugs for more than half a century and problems, including development of resistance to antimonials and lack of efficacy against VL/HIV co-infections, have emphasized the need for new drugs. Squalene synthase (SQS) is an essential enzyme for the biosynthesis of protozoal sterol molecules. In this work, nineteen synthetic quinuclidines, potentially inhibitors of SQS, were tested against promastigote forms of L. chagasi and the IC50 values of the compounds were determined. The most active compounds had IC50 values of around 30 nM and induced complete growth arrest and cell lysis at sub-micromolar concentrations. We analyzed the morphological structure of the parasites treated with these compounds by transmission electron microscopy of thin sections. Treated parasites showed significant ultrastructural changes, which varied from discrete alterations to total destruction of the cells, depending on the drug concentration and the time of incubation. One important change observed was a typical swelling of the unique and highly branched mitochondrion, where the inner membrane lost its organization. There was an increase in the number of autophagosomal structures. Changes in the organization of the nuclear chromatin and alterations in the flagellar pocket and flagellar membrane were also observed. 相似文献

A 6‐year‐old female, spayed Collie was referred to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine for a 12‐month history of a progressive right corneal mass. A superficial keratectomy was performed and histopathology revealed a corneal melanocytoma with complete excision. There has been no recurrence of the neoplasm to date (12 months). Patients suffering from coeliac disease have to avoid traditional cereals-based products and depend on the availability of gluten-free alternatives. The gluten-free bread matrix and its foam stability are strongly affected by the choice of ingredients. In this study, the impact of quinoa white flour on bread quality parameters, in particular volume, has been investigated. The pseudocereal proved to be a suitable substrate for dough aeration using yeast, since considerably more glucose and a higher activity of α-glucosidase were found in comparison to rice and corn flour. Consequently, quinoa white flour was used to replace 40–100% of the rice and corn flour in a gluten-free control recipe. As a result, quinoa white flour enhanced the specific volume by 33%, which was related to the absence of bran components and the increased α-glucosidase activity. The significance of the latter was proven by separately adding sucrose and fungal amyloglucosidase to the control recipe. Moreover, the crumb featured homogeneous and finely distributed gas bubbles and the taste was not compromised. Thus, it was possible to improve the quality of gluten-free bread by using quinoa white flour, which might be a relief for coeliac patients. 相似文献
