Many corals establish symbiosis with Symbiodiniaceae cells from surrounding environments, but very few Symbiodiniaceae cells exist in the water column. Given that the N-acetyl-d-glucosamine-binding lectin ActL attracts Symbiodiniaceae cells, we hypothesized that corals must attract Symbiodiniaceae cells using ActL to acquire them. Anti-ActL antibody inhibited acquisition of Symbiodiniaceae cells, and rearing seawater for juvenile Acropora tenuis contained ActL, suggesting that juvenile A. tenuis discharge ActL to attract these cells. Among eight Symbiodiniaceae cultured strains, ActL attracted NBRC102920 (Symbiodinium tridacnidorum) most strongly followed by CS-161 (Symbiodinium tridacnidorum), CCMP2556 (Durusdinium trenchii), and CCMP1633 (Breviolum sp.); however, it did not attract GTP-A6-Sy (Symbiodinium natans), CCMP421 (Effrenium voratum), FKM0207 (Fugacium sp.), and CS-156 (Fugacium sp.). Juvenile polyps of A. tenuis acquired limited Symbiodiniaceae cell strains, and the number of acquired Symbiodiniaceae cells in a polyp also differed from each other. The number of Symbiodiniaceae cells acquired by juvenile polyps of A. tenuis was correlated with the ActL chemotactic activity. Thus, ActL could be used to attract select Symbiodiniaceae cells and help Symbiodiniaceae cell acquisition in juvenile polyps of A. tenuis, facilitating establishment of symbiosis between A. tenuis and Symbiodiniaceae cells. 相似文献

We evaluated the role of classical swine fever virus (CSFV) in the formation of button ulcers in the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses of pigs experimentally infected with a subgenotype 2.1 isolate of CSFV, which was isolated in Japan in 2019, revealed follicular necrosis in the submucosal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue and herniation of crypts as factors that contribute to the development of button ulcers during CSFV infection. The frequency of forest walking among the general population is a major topic of study in forest science. The objectives of this study were threefold: to assess the frequency of forest walking among Japanese residents of Nagoya, a large city; to evaluate differences among frequency of forest walking by participants from a large city, an urban area (Shizuoka; 4,666 participants), and a rural area (Yakumo Town, Hokkaido; 397 participants) in previous studies; and to examine factors related to frequency of forest walking. The survey, by self-administered questionnaire, in the major city of Nagoya was conducted between June 2008 and May 2010. In all, 5,158 participants (M/F, 1,466/3,692; mean age ± SD [range], 52.5 ± 10.3 [35–69] years) were included in the analysis. The proportions of frequency of forest walking ≥ once/month and ≥ once/year were 10.9 % (M/F, 15.1/9.3 %) and 46.1 % (51.0/44.1 %), respectively. In multiple logistic regression analysis, significant differences were noted among study sites for the adjusted odds ratio for frequency of forest walking. Overall, the order of highest to lowest frequency of forest walking was Shizuoka > Nagoya > Yakumo. Factors related to frequency of forest walking were common among the three study sites. Higher frequency of forest walking was associated with male sex and older age; the most relevant factor related to frequency of forest walking was its enjoyment level. Sheath blight, caused by Rhizoctonia solani, is one of the most serious diseases of rice. Among 33 rice accessions, mainly from National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences (NIAS) Core Collection, we found three landraces from the Himalayas—Jarjan, Nepal 555 and Nepal 8—with resistance to sheath blight in 3 years’ field testing. Backcrossed inbred lines (BILs) derived from a cross between Jarjan and the leading Japanese cultivar Koshihikari were used in QTL analyses. Since later-heading lines show fewer lesions, we used only earlier-heading BILs to avoid association with heading date. We detected eight QTLs; the Jarjan allele of three of these increased resistance. Only one QTL, on chromosome 9 (between markers Nag08KK18184 and Nag08KK18871), was detected in all 3 years. Chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSLs) carrying it showed resistance in field tests. Thirty F2 lines derived from a cross between Koshihikari and one CSSL supported the QTL. 相似文献

Cortisol (Cr), the most important glucocorticoid (GC), is well known to suppress uterine
prostaglandin F2α (PGF) production. However, the details of the regulatory mechanisms
controlling the cyclic changes in endometrial PGF production remain unclear. Here we
investigated the expression of the GC receptor (GC-Rα), the actions of cortisol throughout
the estrous cycle and the regulatory mechanism of GC-Rα in the bovine endometrium. The
levels of GC-Rα protein were greater at the mid-luteal stage (Days 8–12) than at the other
stages. Cr more strongly suppressed PGF production at the mid-luteal stage than at the
follicular stage. GC-Rα expression was increased by progesterone (P4) but decreased by
estradiol-17β (E2) in cultured endometrial stromal cells. The overall results suggest that
ovarian steroid hormones control the cyclic changes in endometrial PGF production by
regulating GC-Rα expression in bovine endometrial stromal cells. 相似文献

The raccoon (Procyon lotor), indigenous to North America, has
naturalized in Japan as an invasive alien species, having been introduced into the country
in the 1970s. In Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan, feral raccoons have been
increasing in number and spreading throughout the island. The age at the onset of puberty
for raccoons is important for estimating individual lifetime reproductive success and
population growth. The present study investigated the timing of and potential factors
affecting the onset of puberty in male raccoons in Hokkaido. External characteristics and
histology of testes were studied in 151 male feral raccoons and in 1 captive juvenile. For
the majority of feral yearling raccoons, prepubertal development began in May, and
spermatozoa production began in October prior to their second mating season. However, some
larger juveniles attained puberty during the juvenile period. The captive juvenile, which
was fed throughout the winter, attained puberty only 11 months after birth. These results
suggest that if male raccoons can achieve enough body growth before the first mating
season, puberty can be attained early. In both juveniles and yearlings, spermatozoa
production was only observed after autumn. This timing coincided with the recrudescence of
seasonally active spermatogenesis in adult males. Therefore, attaining puberty in male
raccoons appears to require both adequate body nutrient development and several
environmental factors that control seasonal testicular changes. 相似文献

An internal fruit rot with a malodor was found in netted melons (Cucumis melo L.) in commercial greenhouses in Kochi Prefecture, Japan, in 1998, despite their healthy appearance and lack of water-soaking
or brown spots on the surface. A yellow bacterium was consistently isolated from the affected fruits. To confirm the pathogenicity
of eight representative isolates of the yellow bacterium, we stub-inoculated ovaries (immature-fruits) 5–7 days after artificial
pollination, with a pin smeared with bacteria. After the melon fruits had grown for 60 more days, an internal fruit rot resembling
the natural infection appeared, and the inoculated bacterium was reisolated. The melon isolates had properties identical with
Pantoea ananatis, such as gram-negative staining, facultative anaerobic growth, indole production, phenylalanine deaminase absence, and acid
production from melibiose, sorbitol, glycerol, and inositol. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rDNA sequences showed that
the melon bacterium positioned closely with known P. ananatis strains. The melon bacterium had indole acetic acid (IAA) biosynthesis genes (iaaM and iaaH) and a cytokinin biosynthesis gene (etz). The bacterium could be distinguished from the other ‘Pantoea’ group strains by rep-PCR genomic fingerprinting. From these results, the causal agent of internal fruit rot was identified
as a strain of P.ananatis [Serrano in (Philipp J Sci 36:271–305, 1928); Mergaert et al. in (Int J Syst Bacteriol 43:162–173, 1993)].
