  • 1. Prior to 1983 the Danish legislation concerning streams gave priority to drainage of water. The revision of The Watercourse Act gave balanced priority to drainage of water and environmental quality, focusing on an ecologically more appropriate maintenance practice and giving special provisions for stream restoration activities.
  • 2. Different measures of single structure restoration have been used, the most common being replacement of weirs, dams or other obstacles by rapids, establishment of salmonid spawning grounds, and installation of new or improved fish ladders.
  • 3. The most common stream channel restoration method is integrated use of a number of single structure measures. Establishment of a two-stage channel and re-opening of small piped streams have also been used. Stream valley restoration includes restoration of old meanders or establishment of a new sinuous channel and involves the adjacent riparian areas.
  • 4. The changed stream maintenance practice involves a new strategy for dredging and cutting of weeds and bank vegetation in order to minimize the ecological damage caused by keeping a reasonable discharge capacity. In 1990, environmentally acceptable weed-cutting was performed in 37% of all municipal streams and the bank vegetation was left uncut in a third of the streams. Similarly, more than half of the county streams were maintained using hand scythes and in 74% of the streams the bank vegetation was left uncut.
  • 5. Quantitatively, stream restoration has contributed little to the general improvement of Danish streams compared with changed maintenance practice. Stream restoration projects create public interest in the environmental quality of streams, but major improvements in the physical properties of Danish streams depend on future maintenance practice.
  • 6. Due to major changes predicted in Danish agriculture many riparian areas and wetlands will reappear and the natural or semi-natural physical properties of streams will be re-established by natural processes or changed in maintenance practice. However, there will still be large areas with intensive agriculture, where environmental and agricultural interests must be balanced. The Danish experience has shown that this is possible.

The growth-independent effect of ovine growth hormone (oGH) and oGH + cortisol treatment on seawater (SW) adaptation in immature rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri was investigated. Fish were injected every second day with saline, 2.0 μg oGH/g or 2.0 μg oGH + 8.0 μg cortisol/g for a maximum of 8 injections in freshwater (FW). Subgroups were transferred to 28‰ SW after 4 or 8 injections, and changes in plasma Na+ and Cl, muscle water content and gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity were measured. In both of the hormone-treated groups retained in FW, gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity and interlamellar chloride cell density increased. The effects were most pronounced in the oGH + cortisol group after 2 weeks of treatment. After transfer to SW most of the control fish died due to the osmotic stress, whereas in the hormone-treated groups, mortality was low and there was a positive correlation between pretransfer gill Na+/K+-ATPase and the ability to maintain ionic-osmotic homeostasis after SW transfer. After two weeks of oGH + cortisol treatment, gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity was maximal. In contrast, after SW transfer, Na+/K+-ATPase activity increased further in the oGH-treated group. This group regulated ionic-osmotic parameters less effectively than the oGH + cortisol-treated group. The data indicate that GH and cortisol are important hormones in the regulation of hypoosmoregulatory mechanisms in S. gairdneri.  相似文献

In analysis of time-to-event data, classical survival models ignore the presence of potential nonsusceptible (cured) individuals, which, if present, will invalidate the inference procedures. Existence of nonsusceptible individuals is particularly relevant under challenge testing with specific pathogens, which is a common procedure in aquaculture breeding schemes. A cure model is a survival model accounting for a fraction of nonsusceptible individuals in the population. This study proposes a mixed cure model for time-to-event data, measured as sequential binary records. In a simulation study survival data were generated through 2 underlying traits: susceptibility and endurance (risk of dying per time-unit), associated with 2 sets of underlying liabilities. Despite considerable phenotypic confounding, the proposed model was largely able to distinguish the 2 traits. Furthermore, if selection is for improved susceptibility rather than endurance, the error of applying a classical survival model was nonnegligible. The difference was most pronounced for scenarios with substantial underlying genetic variation in endurance and when the 2 underlying traits were lowly genetically correlated. In the presence of nonsusceptible individuals, the method provides a novel and more accurate tool for utilization of time-to-event data, and has also been proven successful when applied to zero-inflated longitudinal binary data.  相似文献

Fluoroquinolone (FQ) antimicrobial agents are used extensively in human and veterinary medicine. Widespread use of any antimicrobial agent can apply selective pressure on populations of bacteria, which may result in an increase in the prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant isolates. Antimicrobial-susceptibility data on bacteria isolated from the canine urinary tract by the University of Missouri-Columbia Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, Columbia, MO, were used to determine whether there has been an increase in the prevalence of FQ-resistant bacteria over time. Between January 1992 and December 2001, minimum inhibitory concentrations of either ciprofloxacin (1992-1998) or enrofloxacin (1998-2001) were determined for 1,478 bacterial isolates from the canine urinary tract. The predominant bacterial species isolated were Escherichia coli (547 isolates), Proteus mirabilis (156), and Staphylococcus intermedius (147). In all, there were 13 bacterial species with more than 25 isolates each. A significant increase in the overall proportion of resistant bacterial isolates was documented from 1992 to 2001 (Cochran-Armitage test for trend, P < 0.0001). The same increase in resistant isolates was documented when either ciprofloxacin or enrofloxacin was analyzed separately (P < 0.0001 and P < 0.0002, respectively). No difference was detected in rates of bacterial FQ resistance with regard to the sex of the dog from which the bacteria were isolated. The frequency with which some bacterial species were isolated differed with the sex of the infected dog. Proteus mirabilis was found more often in females (P < 0.0001), whereas beta hemolytic Streptococcus spp., were found more often in males (P = 0.0003). Although the overall efficacy of FQ antimicrobials remained high with greater than 80% of isolates being susceptible, the data demonstrated an increase in the proportion of resistant bacteria isolated from the urinary tract of the dog.  相似文献

The small intestinal digestibility of microbial amino acids and the apparent re-absorption of endogenous amino acids were estimated in three ruminal, duodenal and ileal fistulated lactating dairy cows. The cows were assigned to a 3 × 3 Latin square and fed diets low in amino acids, composed of straw, starch, molasses and urea. The treatments were three straw to concentrate ratios. The digestibilities and re-absorptions were estimated from duodenal and ileal flows of amino acids from feed, microbial and endogenous sources. The duodenal distribution of amino acids between different origins was determined by the difference method and by the amino acid profile method. The ileal distribution was estimated by a simple method where the feed fraction was estimated by the mobile bag method, the endogenous fraction as the water soluble fraction and the microbial fraction as the rest. In ileal samples, 8.0 ± 1.1, 52.2 ± 2.9 and 39.8 ± 2.6% of total amino acid nitrogen (AAN) were of feed, microbial and endogenous origin, respectively, compared with 5.1 ± 0.9, 61.6 ± 6.6 and 32.7 ± 6.9% in duodenal samples. The small intestinal digestibility of microbial AAN was estimated to be 75.1 ± 1.8% and the apparent re-absorption of endogenous AAN to be 62.3 ± 11.1%.  相似文献

A total of 166 samples of secretions collected from Danish heifers suffering from clinically diagnosed summer mastitis were examined bacteriologically. One hundred and sixty three samples yielded positive findings whereas no growth was obtained from 3 specimens. The majority of samples revealed a mixed flora in which the predominant components were Actinomyces pyogenes, Peptostreptococcus indolicus, a microaerophilic coccus (Stuart-Schwan coccus), Fusobacterium necrophorum, Bacteriodes melaninogenicus and Streptococcus dysgalactiae. Pure cultures were recovered in only 7% of cases. P. indolicus was isolated from 875 of the cases, a microaerophilic coccus from 84%, A. pyogenes from 72%, Fusobacterium necrophorum from 52%, Str. dysgalactiae from 37%, B. melaninogenicus from 33% and various unidentified obligate anaerobic Gram-negative rods from 31%. The results confirm the complex bacterial aetiology of summer mastitis.  相似文献

Contents: The magnitude of fetal loss was studied in 13 Danish Landrace & Yorkshire (L&Y) crosses. The ovulation rate and number of fetuses were recorded following ovariohysterectomy on days 46–112 of pregnancy. On the basis of these figures the mean ovulation rate, litter size, fetal loss and transcornual migration were found to be 15.5., 12.2., 21.4% and 13.7%, respectively. It is concluded that the extent of fetal loss is smaller than expected from the literature .  相似文献

Nine pigs were fed crystalline ochratoxin A in their feed at a concentration of about 1 mg/kg. Three pigs and their controls were killed after 3 months and 6 pigs and controls were killed after 2 years. A decrease of the ratio TmPAH/CIn, increased urinary glucose excretion and decreased ability to concentrate urine, occurred within a few weeks and aggravated slightly during the 2-year period. Changes in renal structure, characterized by degeneration and atrophy of proximal tubules, interstitial fibrosis and hyalinization of glomeruli, were progressive during time of exposure, but terminal renal failure was not reached. The kidney, liver, muscular and adipose tissue contained 3 to 27 microgram ochratoxin A/kg after 3 months of exposure. No further accumulation of ochratoxin A residue was found after 2 years of exposure.  相似文献

Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular coccidian parasite found worldwide and is known to infect virtually all warm-blooded animals. It requires a cat (family Felidae) to complete its full life cycle. Despite the absence of wild felids on the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, T. gondii has been found in resident predators such as the arctic fox and polar bear. It has therefore been suggested that T. gondii may enter this ecosystem via migratory birds. The objective of this study was to identify locations where goose populations may become infected with T. gondii, and to investigate the dynamics of T. gondii specific antibodies. Single blood samples of both adults and juveniles were collected from selected goose species (Anser anser, A. brachyrhynchus, Branta canadensis, B. leucopsis) at Arctic brood-rearing areas in Russia and on Svalbard, and temperate wintering grounds in the Netherlands and Denmark (migratory populations) as well as temperate brood-rearing grounds (the Netherlands, non-migratory populations). A modified agglutination test was used on serum, for detection of antibodies against T. gondii. Occasional repeated annual sampling of individual adults was performed to determine the antibody dynamics. Adults were found seropositive at all locations (Arctic and temperate, brood-rearing and wintering grounds) with low seroprevalence in brood-rearing birds on temperate grounds. As no juvenile geese were found seropositive at any brood-rearing location, but nine month old geese were found seropositive during spring migration we conclude that geese, irrespective of species and migration, encounter T. gondii infection in wintering areas. In re-sampled birds on Svalbard significant seroreversion was observed, with 42% of seropositive adults showing no detectable antibodies after 12 months, while the proportion of seroconversion was only 3%. Modelled variation of seroprevalence with field data on antibody longevity and parasite transmission suggests seroprevalence of a population within a range of 5.2–19.9%, in line with measured values. The high occurrence of seroreversion compared to the low occurrence of seroconversion hampers analysis of species- or site-specific patterns, but explains the absence of an increase in seroprevalence with age and the observed variation in antibody titre. These findings imply that even though infection rate is low, adults introduce T. gondii to the high Arctic ecosystem following infection in temperate regions.  相似文献
