Despite studies on range shifts being abundant, the problem of dispersal barriers limiting climate migrants’ movement is yet to be fully included into any modeling framework. For this reason, we introduce a novel concept whereby the interplay of range shifts and dispersal barriers of a particular spatial configuration can threaten the persistence of populations under a climate change scenario. We named this concept “C‐trap,” based on the topographic shape of such barriers. After elaborating on the theoretical features of C‐traps, we provide a simple method that combines environmental data and future climate projections to locate them spatially. We use this method to determine where high C‐trap densities have the potential to further threaten the conservation of endangered, endemic animals across the world's terrestrial realm, in a climate change scenario. Our methodology detected potential C‐traps for the study system, with areas of high density mostly located in east Europe, south Asia and North America. However, finer‐scale analyses are required to assess the magnitude of the threat locally. Dispersal barriers add an additional dimension to range shift studies and can ultimately prevent otherwise successful climate migrants from tracking their climatic niche. The methodology presented here is simple and flexible enough to be adapted to a wide range of taxa and locations as well as the fast development of range shift modeling. Therefore, we encourage researchers to include the effects of anthropogenic dispersal barriers in range shifts models and in the planning of effective conservation strategies with reference to climate change.  相似文献

A young and energetic pulsar powers the well-known Crab Nebula. Here, we describe two separate gamma-ray (photon energy greater than 100 mega-electron volts) flares from this source detected by the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The first flare occurred in February 2009 and lasted approximately 16 days. The second flare was detected in September 2010 and lasted approximately 4 days. During these outbursts, the gamma-ray flux from the nebula increased by factors of four and six, respectively. The brevity of the flares implies that the gamma rays were emitted via synchrotron radiation from peta-electron-volt (10(15) electron volts) electrons in a region smaller than 1.4 × 10(-2) parsecs. These are the highest-energy particles that can be associated with a discrete astronomical source, and they pose challenges to particle acceleration theory.  相似文献

In the present study, the phenolic composition analysis of seven red varieties of propolis, collected in different regions of Cuba, was evaluated by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Seventeen compounds were identified in all samples by the interpretation of their mass spectra. This appears to be the first report on the GC-MS analysis of isoflavonoids in the propolis. The results confirmed the presence of the main isoflavonoids isolated previously and suggested the general structure for the other five isoflavonoids. Vestitol, 7-O-methylvestitol, and medicarpin were present in high amounts in all propolis samples analyzed. This result indicates that propolis samples rich in isoflavonoids are not exclusively found in Pinar del Rio province and proves that GC-MS technique is a useful and alternative tool for the chemical analysis of tropical red propolis.  相似文献

Brassica vegetables are attracting major attention as healthy foods because of their content of glucosinolates (GLs) that release the corresponding isothiocyanates (ITCs) upon myrosinase hydrolysis. A number of studies have so far documented the chemopreventive properties of some ITCs. On the other hand, single nutrients detached from the food itself risk being somewhat "reductive", since plants contain several classes of compounds endowed with a polyhedral mechanism of action. Our recent finding that 4-methylthio-3-butenyl isothiocyanate (GRH-ITC) and 4-methylsulfinyl-3-butenyl isothiocyanate (GRE-ITC), released by the GLs purified from Japanese (Kaiware) Daikon (Raphanus sativus L.) seeds and sprouts, had selective cytotoxic/apoptotic activity on three human colon carcinoma cell lines prompted further research on the potential chemopreventive role of a standardized Kaiware Daikon extract (KDE), containing 10.5% w/w GRH and 3.8% w/w GRE, compared to its isolated components. KDE administered in combination with myrosinase at doses corresponding to 50 microM GRH-ITC plus 15 microM GRE-ITC (50 microM KDE-ITC) to three human cancer cell lines (LoVo, HCT-116 and HT-29) significantly reduced cell growth by 94-96% of control in six days (p < 0.05), outperforming pure GRH-ITC or GRE-ITC at the same dose. On the other hand, the same treatment had no significant toxicity on normal human T-lymphocytes. A 50 microM concentration of KDE-ITC had relevant apoptosis induction in all tested cancer cell lines, as confirmed by annexin V assay (e.g., 33% induction in LoVo compared to control, p < 0.05), Bax protein induction (e.g., +20% in HT-29, p < 0.05), and Bcl2 downregulation (e.g.-20% in HT-29, p < 0.05), and induced caspase-1 and PARP-1 activation in all cancer cells as shown by Western blot analysis. Unlike pure GRH or GRH-ITC, KDE also had significant chain-breaking antioxidant activity, retarding the AAPH-initiated autoxidation of methyl linoleate in SDS micelles at concentrations as low as 4.4 ppm (-50% in oxygen consumption rate), as monitored by Clark-type microelectrode oxygen-uptake kinetics, and induced very fast quenching of DPPH. radical in methanol with t(1/2) (s) = (1.47 +/- 0.25) x 10(-2)/[KDE; (g/L)], measured by stopped-flow UV-vis kinetics at 298 K. The potential chemopreventive role of KDE is discussed.  相似文献

Silicon (Si) is a beneficial element for plants as it increases their resistance to several biotic and abiotic stresses. In the rhizosphere, root exudates, especially when released by nutritionally stressed plants, promote the mineral weathering and, consequently, influence Si biogeochemistry. This study aims at evaluating the mineralogical alterations in the rhizosphere of Fe‐deficient or Fe‐sufficient barley plants grown either in a natural or in an artificial calcareous soil, focusing on the dynamics of both Fe and Si. After 6 d of soil–plant contact, X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of rhizosphere soil samples of Fe‐deficient plants revealed, for both natural and artificial soil, a decrease of amorphous phases and an increase of smectite compared to the unplanted soil. Root exudates released by Fe‐deficient plants were most likely the main responsible for the weathering of the amorphous phases by a ligand controlled dissolution mechanism. When the soil–plant contact was prolonged up to 12 d, plants overcame Fe nutritional stress and their effect on soil mineralogy completely changed, as proved by the considerable increase of amorphous and decrease of smectite. Smectite decrease might evidence the effort of plant to mobilize Si and micronutrients other than Fe from the soil through the exudation of organic ligands. When the artificial soil was treated with Fe‐sufficient barley plants, the mineral weathering trend appeared reversed compared to the experiments with Fe‐deficient plants. Plant nutritional status regulates the root exudation pattern and, consequently, drives mineral weathering processes in the rhizosphere. Barley has shown to be able to mobilize Si from smectite, yet depending on its Fe supply and proving the strict connection between Si and Fe dynamics in the rhizosphere.  相似文献

The study of the secondary metabolites contained in the organic extract of Caribbean sponge Smenospongia aurea led to the isolation of smenothiazole A (3) and B (4), hybrid peptide/polyketide compounds. Assays performed using four solid tumor cell lines showed that smenothiazoles exert a potent cytotoxic activity at nanomolar levels, with selectivity over ovarian cancer cells and a pro-apoptotic mechanism.  相似文献

The removal efficiency and tolerance of Typha domingensis to Cr(VI) in treatments with and without organic matter (OM) addition were evaluated in microcosm-scale wetlands. Studied Cr(VI) concentrations were 15 mg L?1, 30 mg L?1, and 100 mg L?1, in treatments with and without OM addition, arranged in triplicate. Controls (without neither metal nor OM addition—without metal with OM addition) were disposed. Cr(VI) was removed efficiently from water in all treatments. OM addition enhanced significantly Cr(VI) and total Cr removals from water. In the treatments with OM addition, significantly higher Cr concentrations were found in sediment than the treatments without OM addition. Plants of the treatments without OM addition showed significantly higher Cr concentrations in tissues but lower biomass increase than the treatments with OM addition. The highest Cr concentrations in tissues were observed in submerged parts of leaves, followed by roots. According to SEM analysis, in the 100 mg L?1 treatments, the highest Cr accumulation was observed in the epidermis of old leaves. Although Cr(VI) produced changes in root morphology, the OM addition favored the plant growth. In T. domingensis, root morphological plasticity is an important mechanism to improve metal tolerance and Cr uptake in wetland systems minimizing the environmental impact.  相似文献

Bench scale tests have been carried out in order to investigatebioremediation feasibility of a Manufacturing Gas Plant site(Bovisa Gasometri – MI – I) aged soil, highly contaminated bypolyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and mineral oils. Biodegradationstudies were carried out at 22 °C in a slurry system reactor, with a solid to liquid ratio of 10% w/w. Three testswere performed, over a period of 23, 24 and 91 days respectively.In the first test, only soil and water were put into the system.In the second test, microbial activity was inhibited to evaluatethe amount of abiotic losses. In the third test, macronutrientswere added to the reactor; bioaugmentation was also carried outby an inoculum of autochthonous PAH-degrading microorganisms. Saturated hydrocarbons, PAHs, transformation products, heterotropic and PAH-degrading bacteria and fungi were monitored.Tests showed that high removal efficiency could be obtained following 23 days of treatment for all PAHs, including high molecular weight compounds. Abiotic losses were an importantprocess contributing to concentration abatement in soil, especially in the first phase of the treatment. Lag time lackfor all polyaromatic hydrocarbons revealed that autochthonousmicroorganisms were well adapted to these contaminants; bioaugmentation did not seem to speed up the process. The higherremoval rate and efficiency for high molecular weight PAHs obtained in the third test suggested that nutrient addition could play an important role in the biodegradation process ofthese compounds, whereas it did not significantly modify total(abiotic + biotic) removal of light compounds.  相似文献
