Changing land-use patterns and amenity-driven migration have brought agriculture back into people’s lives, but there is a disconnection between the realities of production agriculture and romantic images attached to farming. To the extent that “rurality” is attached to farming, people may desire to live in rural places, but they may be unprepared for the realities of living near a working farm. Greater numbers of communities are facing “either/or” outcomes regarding the conversion of “open space” land to residential or commercial uses versus landscape preservation. This study explored the perceptions and preferences of a community regarding the conversion of a hypothetical parcel of open space to a working dairy or to a residential subdivision. Results suggest that the opportunity costs of foregoing open space for residential development are high, with implications for valuing the conservation of traditions that are tied to the land versus conversion of land solely for development purposes.  相似文献

In Wallonia, Belgium, intensive in situ charcoal production that was linked closely to pre‐industrial smelting and steel‐making affected a large part of the forested area in the late eighteenth century. Charcoal kiln relics can be detected under forest as domes of about 10 m in diameter, with the topsoil greatly enriched with charcoal residues. We sampled 19 charcoal kiln sites and the adjacent reference soil by soil horizon on four different soil types (Arenosols, Luvisols, Cambisols and Podzols). Data were analysed with linear mixed models to assess the effect of the charcoal kiln site on soil properties in relation to depth and soil conditions. We also addressed the evolution of soil properties over time by a comparison of the soil characteristics at a currently active kiln site. The charcoal‐rich topsoil has a larger C:N ratio and cation exchange capacity (CEC) per unit of organic carbon than the reference soil. The largest CECs per unit of carbon were observed on soil with coarser textures. On acidic soil, the increase in base saturation in the subsoil reflects the past liming effect of ash produced by wood charring, whereas the topsoil is re‐acidified. The acidity of carbonate‐rich Cambisols, however, is not reduced. Regardless of soil type, the kiln topsoil is greatly depleted in exchangeable K+ and available P, which may be attributed to the small affinity of the exchange complex of charcoal for K+ and a decrease in P availability with time. Therefore, we recommend further research on the long‐term effects of biochar on the dynamics of plant nutrients.  相似文献

Xanthomonas wilt, caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. musacearum has, since 2001, become the most important and widespread disease of Musa in East and Central Africa. Over the past decade, new research findings and especially feedback from small-scale farmers have helped in fine-tuning Xanthomonas wilt control options. During the initial years of the Xanthomonas wilt epidemic in East Africa, the complete uprooting of diseased mats and the burning or burying of plant debris was advocated as part of a control package which included the use of clean garden tools and early removal of male buds to prevent insect vector transmission. Uprooting a complete mat (i.e. the mother plant and a varying number of lateral shoots) is understandably time-consuming and labour intensive and becomes very cumbersome when a large number of diseased mats have to be removed. Recent research findings suggest that Xcm bacteria do not colonize all lateral shoots (i.e. incomplete systemicity occurs) and even when present that this does not necessarily lead to symptom expression and disease. This led to a new control method whereby only the visibly diseased plants within a mat are cut at soil level. The underlying idea is that the continued removal of only the diseased plants in a field will reduce the inoculum level and will bring down disease incidence to an acceptable level. This method is less labour intensive and takes a short time compared to the removal of a complete mat. However, single diseased stem removal needs to go hand in hand with prevention of new infections that can occur through the use of contaminated garden tools or through insect vector transmission. Novel transgenic approaches are also discussed. This paper presents an overview of past and ongoing research towards the development of a more practical and less demanding control strategy for Xanthomonas wilt.  相似文献

The metabolism of dexamethasone (DXM) in the camel was assessed by in vivo and in vitro techniques. Liver samples were collected at the abattoir from camels of either sex, and microsomes were isolated and characterized as to their protein and haemoprotein content as well as for their ability to metabolise several cytochrome P450 model substrates. The expression of different P450 enzymes was evaluated by means of immunoblotting, and the glucuronidating capacity was assessed with 1-naphthol as the substrate. The activity of 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 was assayed using metyrapone as a model substrate. To examine the in vitro metabolism of DXM, microsomes were incubated with the corticoid in the presence of either a NADPH-generating system or of uridindiphosphoglucuronic acid. In vivo metabolism of DXM was studied in two male camels, injected with a bolus intravenous dose of DXM (0.2 mg/kg body weight) and DXM metabolites were evaluated in urine samples collected at different times after the administration. DXM and metabolites were extracted using solid phase and liquid-liquid extraction, and analysed by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC/MS) and by LC/MS/MS. Comparative results were obtained by in vitro and in vivo studies. Two phase I metabolites were detected: the major one resulted from reduction of the 3-carbonyl group in ring A and the minor metabolite from ring hydroxylation of ring A. Glucuronidation involved both phase I metabolites as well as the parent compound.  相似文献

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is a major threat for swine industry and understanding factors involved in its epidemiology is undoubtedly essential for disease control. As a part of a larger project, a cross-sectional study was performed on breeding sites in a moderate density area of swine production in Quebec to estimate the prevalence of PRRSV infected sites and to evaluate if characteristics of sites and biosecurity practices, either as specific measures or as a global score, were associated with PRRSV status. A questionnaire and diagnostic procedures were performed on 54 breeding sites between September 2006 and August 2008. A biosecurity score that had been previously computed using two-step clustering procedure was used, classifying breeding sites into two biosecurity patterns (high vs. low) according to 21 specific biosecurity measures. The apparent prevalence of PRRSV infected sites was 74.0% (95% CI, 60.3-85.0). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models with robust standard errors adjusting for potential clustering of sites due to same ownership were computed. In a first multivariable model evaluating characteristics of sites and specific biosecurity variables, four main effects were significantly associated (P<0.05) with PRRSV positive status: large pig inventory (OR: 10.7), proximity to closest pig site (OR: 7.3), absence of shower (OR: 8.7) and free access to the main entrance of the site by the rendering truck (OR: 7.0). In a second multivariable model including a global biosecurity score as a surrogate for a specific pattern of biosecurity measures, this score was not retained in the final model. The adjusted population attributable fractions were 16% for the proximity to closest pig site variable, 27% for the absence of shower variable, and 10% for the free access to main entrance of the site by the rendering truck. These two latter biosecurity measures, manageable directly on the site, should be prioritized and be part of any intervention strategy designed for PRRSV control.  相似文献

We simplified Kozak’s taper model by setting the inflection point at 1.3 m (dbh) without losing accuracy and precision. The simplification was required to facilitate the estimation of the covariance parameters when using a mixed-effects method. This method was necessary to take into account the correlation among multiple diameter measurements on an individual stem. The simple stem taper model was fitted to an extended data set collected across the province of Quebec, Canada. Comparison of the predicted stem taper and the derived stem volume with those obtained using existing models showed a comparable predictive power for the simple model. Including a prediction of the tree random effects based on supplementary diameter measurements of the bole improves the predictive ability of the model around the extra diameter observation. This model offers welcome simplicity as a means of predicting tree taper at coarse resolution for planning tree harvesting.  相似文献

Atmospheric sulphur (S) depositions have been decreasing in Europe for the past 20 years. Up to now, there were no evidences of S deficiencies on cut grasslands in Belgium. The effects of S fertilisations together with incremental nitrogen (N) dressings were investigated in Belgium using small plot trials on cut grassland between 2001 and 2003. In 4 cases out of 13, S supply increased dry matter yields on average by 0.8 t ha−1 y−1. Response to S appeared to depend on the site, the year, the N fertilisation level and the soil. Grass S content was significantly increased and N:S ratio decreased by S fertilisation. High N:S ratio (>14) was observed in grasslands without S fertilisation even with a moderate N supply. It is concluded that S deficiency can be feared for cut grassland in Belgium mainly on light textured soils after a wet winter.  相似文献

A noncytopathogenic field strain of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) was isolated from an Iowa farm brood sow and from her hysterectomy-derived, colostrum-deprived (HDCD) piglets. This field isolant was fully virulent for a neonatal calf. The NADL strain of BVDV was passaged through a series of HDCD piglets with no resultant loss of virulence for neonatal calves. Most of the BVD viral isolants recovered from pigs had been changed from a cytopathogenic biotype to a noncytopathogenic biotype. Circumstantial evidence points to swine as “carrier” hosts of BVDV.  相似文献

Peach powdery mildew is one of the major diseases of the peach. Various sources of resistance to PPM have thus been identified, including the single dominant locus Vr2 carried by the peach rootstock ‘Pamirskij 5’. To map Vr2, a linkage map based on microsatellite markers was constructed from the F2 progeny (WP2) derived from the cross ‘Weeping Flower Peach’ × ‘Pamirskij 5’. Self-pollinations of the parents were also performed. Under greenhouse conditions, all progenies were scored after artificial inoculations in two classes of reactions to PPM (resistant/susceptible). In addition to Vr2, WP2 segregated for three other traits from ‘Weeping Flower Peach’: Rm1 for green peach aphid resistance, Di2 for double-flower and pl for weeping-growth habit. With their genomic locations unknown or underdocumented, all were phenotyped as Mendelian characters and mapped: Vr2 mapped at the top of LG8, at 3.3 cM, close to the CPSCT018 marker; Rm1 mapped at the bottom of LG1, at a position of 116.5 cM, cosegregating with the UDAp-467 marker and in the same region as Rm2 from ‘Rubira’®; Di2 mapped at 28.8 cM on LG6, close to the MA027a marker; and pl mapped at 44.1 cM on LG3 between the MA039a and SSRLG3_16m46 markers. Furthermore, this study revealed, for the first time, a pseudo-linkage between two traits of the peach: Vr2 and the Gr locus, which controls the red/green color of foliage. The present work therefore constitutes a significant preliminary step for implementing marker-assisted selection for the four major traits targeted in this study.  相似文献
