The kyanite-sillimanite-andalusite triple point exists in the pressure-temperature plane at 8 +/- 0.5 kb and 300 +/- 50 degrees C. Reactions are accomplished experimentally with a Bridgman opposed-anvil press (with an external furnace), modified to provide shearing of the sample charges. We describe the draft genome of the microcrustacean Daphnia pulex, which is only 200 megabases and contains at least 30,907 genes. The high gene count is a consequence of an elevated rate of gene duplication resulting in tandem gene clusters. More than a third of Daphnia's genes have no detectable homologs in any other available proteome, and the most amplified gene families are specific to the Daphnia lineage. The coexpansion of gene families interacting within metabolic pathways suggests that the maintenance of duplicated genes is not random, and the analysis of gene expression under different environmental conditions reveals that numerous paralogs acquire divergent expression patterns soon after duplication. Daphnia-specific genes, including many additional loci within sequenced regions that are otherwise devoid of annotations, are the most responsive genes to ecological challenges.  相似文献

While soil extracellular enzyme assays (EEAs) are frequently used to infer soil microbial function, the data typically reflect a small number of sampling points across a season, and it is unclear to what extent soil EEA may vary on the time scale of days to weeks. Rain events, in particular, may cause rapid shifts in EEA, and fine scale temporal data are needed to properly assess the generality of EEA data collected at coarser time scales. We examined soil EEA 2-3 times per week in the field from June to November in the context of natural rain events and temperature fluctuations, and explored how long-term water addition altered EEA responses. We also tested the short-term effects of water addition on the distribution of EEA in intact soil mesocoms and leachate. There was little temporal variation in EEA for the hydrolases phosphatase, N-acetyl-glucosaminidase and β-glucosidase, despite the occurrence of multiple large rain events and large soil temperature fluctuations. Phenol oxidase activity correlated significantly with seasonal trends in temperature and soil moisture, but was highly variable at short time scales, and the latter did not correlate significantly with short-term changes in soil microclimate. EEA generally increased in response to long-term water addition, and in soil mesocosms water addition did not significantly redistribute EEA among the upper and lower soil layers, and leachate EEA was three orders of magnitude lower than soil EEA. Overall, our results reveal relatively minor short-term variation in EEA for hydrolase enzymes, and no discernable response to temperature fluctuations or precipitation over the short term. However, high short-term variation in phenol oxidase activity suggests that it may be difficult to infer temporal trends in EEA for this enzyme from a limited number of sampling points.  相似文献

Earthworms secrete granules of calcium carbonate. These are potentially important in soil biogeochemical cycles and are routinely recorded in archaeological studies of Quaternary soils. Production rates of calcium carbonate granules by the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris L. were determined over 27 days in a range of soils with differing chemical properties (pH, organic matter content, water holding capacity, bulk composition, cation exchange capacity and exchangeable cations). Production rate varied between soils, lay in the range 00.043 mmolCaCO3 (0–4.3 mg) earthworm?1 d?1 with an average rate of 8×10?3 mmolCaCO3 (0.8 mg) earthworm?1 d?1 and was significantly correlated (r = 0.68, P  0.01) with soil pH. In a second experiment lasting 315 days earthworms repeatedly (over periods of 39–57 days) produced comparable masses of granules. Converting individual earthworm granule production rates into fluxes expressed on a per hectare of land per year basis depends heavily on estimates of earthworm numbers. Using values of 10–20 L. terrestris m?2 suggests a rate of 183139 molCaCO3 ha?1 yr?1. Data obtained from flow-through dissolution experiments suggest that at near neutral pH, granule geometric surface area-normalised dissolution rates are similar to those for other biogenic and inorganic calcites. Fits of the data to the dissolution relationship r = k(1 ? Ω)n where r = dissolution rate, k = a rate constant, Ω = relative saturation and n = the reaction order gave values of k = 1.72 × 10?10 mol cm?2 s?1 and n = 1.8 for the geometric surface area-normalised rates and k = 3.51 × 10?13 mol cm?2 s?1 and n = 1.8 for the BET surface area-normalised rates. In 196 day leaching column experiments trends in granule dissolution rate referenced to soil chemistry corresponded to predictions made by the SLIM model for dissolution of limestone in soil. If soil solution approaches saturation with respect to calcium carbonate, granule dissolution will slow or even stop and granules be preserved indefinitely. Granules have the potential to be a small but significant component of the biogeochemical cycling of C and Ca in soil.  相似文献

Measuring urine specific gravity (USG) is an important component of urine analysis as it evaluates renal concentrating capability. The objective of this study was to quantify the difference in USG values between a hand-held optical analogue refractometer and a cat-specific digital instrument. Urine samples from 55 cats were assessed. There was a statistically significant difference between these two refractometers (P<0.001), with the optical refractometer (mean USG=1.031) consistently reading higher than the digital refractometer (mean USG=1.027). Results for a random subset of the samples (n=10) were compared with urine osmolality and both the optical and digital instruments demonstrated excellent correlation. While an accurate USG reading is important, it is unlikely that the statistical significance between the two instruments is clinically significant and, therefore, unlikely to result in a change in patient evaluation or treatment plans. While both the digital and optimal refractometers are highly correlated to the urine osmolality, making both devices valid for assessment of USG in clinical practice, this digital device is easier to read and eliminates the variability of subjective interpretation.  相似文献

Phenobarbital has been the primary antiepileptic drug used in primates, but the dosage required for seizure control is frequently associated with significant side effects. Newer antiepileptic drugs and adjunctive therapies currently being used in human medicine provide additional options for treatment of nonhuman primates. This report describes different drug regimes used for control of epileptic seizures in apes at the Milwaukee County Zoo (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A.), including the addition of acetazolamide to phenobarbital, levetiracetam, carbamazepine, and the use of extended cycle oral contraceptives to assist seizure control in female apes with catamenial epilepsy.  相似文献
