Thin Films of n-Si/Poly-(CH3)3Si-Cyclooctatetraene: Conducting-Polymer Solar Cells and Layered Structures

The optical and electronic properties of thin films of the solution-processible polymer poly-(CH(3))(3)Si-cyclooctatetraene are presented. This conjugated polymer is based on a polyacetylene backbone with (CH(3))(3)Si side groups. Thin transparent films have been cast onto n-doped silicon (n-Si) substrates and doped with iodine to form surfacebarrier solar cells. The devices produce photovoltages that are at the theoretical limit and that are much greater than can be obtained from n-Si contacts with conventional metals. Two methods for forming layered polymeric materials, one involving the spincoating of preformed polymers and the other comprising the sequential polymerization of different monomers, are also described. An organic polymer analog of a metal/insulator/metal capacitor has been constructed with the latter method.     

Control of membrane N+ permeability in a hyperpolarizing photoreceptor: similar effect of light and metabolic inhibitors

In the hyperpolarizing photoreceptors of the scallop Pecten irradians the metabolic inhibitors cyani 'e and 2,4-dinitrophenol cause a rapid hyperpolarization and increase in membrane permeability to potassium ions, similar to the effect of light. Cellular metabolism appears important in maintaining the low permeability to potassium ions necessary to keep the membrane depolarized in darkness, possibly by regulating the intracellular calcium ion concentration.     

IMAGING DIAGNOSIS—METASTATIC ADRENAL PHEOCHROMOCYTOMA IN A DOG

A 10‐year‐old Akita mix became acutely paraplegic. Upon magnetic resonance imaging, multiple, slightly T2‐hyperintense, T1‐isointense extradural masses, relative to spinal cord were found in the vertebral canal. The retroperitoneal masses had mixed T2‐signal intensity. The contrast enhancement pattern for the spinal masses was both homogenous and heterogenous. The diagnosis was metastatic pheochromocytoma. Signal intensity of the tumors in this dog was similar to reports of pheochromocytoma in human beings.     

A comparison between the efficacy of thiabendazole and febantel on experimental trichinellosis in rats

Febantel at a dose level of 5 mg kg-1 had a lethal efficacy of 54.1% against the adult worm and 69.5% against the migrating larvae of Trichinella spiralis in rats. When administered at 15 mg kg-1, it demonstrated lethal effects of 94.4, 92.5 and 74.7% against adult, young and encysted larvae, respectively. Infected rats treated with 300 mg kg-1 died. Thiabendazole had efficiencies of 96.4 and 83.3% against intestinal and migrating early muscle phases, respectively, and was 42% effective against the encysting phase.     

Von Willebrand's disease in dogs in the United Kingdom

An assay for the measurement of von Willebrand factor antigen has been established. In a period of 18 months, 13 dogs have been identified as suffering from von Willebrand's disease. The affected animals had levels of von Willebrand factor antigen which ranged from undetectable to 43 per cent of normal. Factor VIII levels were also reduced. Haemorrhagic episodes were usually associated with trauma or surgery, and often required transfusion with fresh blood or plasma to arrest haemorrhage.     

Isolation of bluetongue and epizootic hemorrhagic disease viruses from mosquitoes collected in Indonesia.

Three viruses isolated from anopheline mosquitoes in Indonesia have been identified as bluetongue and epizootic hemorrhagic disease viruses. Another virus isolate showed no relationship to other orbiviruses tested and should be regarded as a new virus; the name Golok is proposed for it. The mosquitoes were collected in 1980 and 1981 in a program designed to isolate flaviviruses infecting humans. It is apparent that such collections of arthropods which feed on large mammals could be screened for other viruses which may infect domestic livestock.     

Ionic basis of hyperpolarizing receptor potential in scallop eye: increase in permeability to potassium ions

Photoreceptors of the distal retina of the scallop respond to light with a large hyperpolarizing receptor potential which is caused by a selective increase in permeability to potassium ions.
