This study aimed at capturing the spatial variability of landscape patterns and their trajectories of change from 1950 to
2000 within a watershed, which is representative of areas of intensive agricultural use. After an analysis of landscape features
changes for the entire watershed based on aerial photographs, hierarchical clustering analysis provided a typology of landscape
patterns for the cadastral lots. Following that, the trajectory of change of each lot was characterized (nature, importance,
direction, rate of change). Seven types of landscape patterns are distinguished by the relative importance of different classes
of landscape features and 51 trajectories of change were identified for the lots. The analysis shows that although the majority
of lots were subjected to a homogenization of their landscape patterns since 1950, this trend is not entirely uniform and
that since 2000 it occurs alongside trends towards diversification of certain landscape features on some lots. Furthermore,
nearly a third of the lots are not following the main trajectories of change detected. Thus, the results suggest that extrinsic
forces (policies, technologies) that are directing main changes in areas of intensive agricultural use toward uniformity could
be modulated by internal forces (uses and values of the population). A better understanding of theses internal forces seems
crucial to manage landscapes. From a methodology standpoint, although the hierarchical clustering analyses appear useful for
understanding the spatial and temporal variability of landscape patterns, particular attention must be given to validating

The robustness of Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg), sperm cryopreservation in the context of selective breeding based on family lines was investigated. Irrespective of egg density, high fertilization success was achieved with cryopreserved sperm when sperm:egg ratios of 1000:1 to 10 000:1 were used. Variation among replicate runs on the same oyster batches was minimal, indicating that cryopreservation and larval rearing procedures were repeatable. Twenty independent single male–female crosses were made to assess the utility of cryopreserved sperm in selective breeding. The fertility of unfrozen sperm was generally a poor predictor of cryopreserved sperm fertility. Based on D‐larval yields, 17 of the 20 crosses were likely to yield adequate spat for selective breeding (>105 D‐larvae from 1 million eggs), two were marginal (5 × 104 D‐larvae) and one was inadequate (4 × 103 D‐larvae). An alternative fertilization strategy to improve D‐yield from a given number of sperm was then tested. Fertilizing 10 million eggs at a sperm:egg ratio of 200:1 increased the total D‐yield when compared with fertilizing 1 million eggs at a sperm:egg ratio of 2000:1 for the same male–female pair. Increased demand has pushed extensive aquaculture towards intensively operated production systems, commonly resulting in eutrophic conditions and cyanobacterial blooms. This review summarizes those cyanobacterial secondary metabolites that can cause undesirable tastes and odors (odorous metabolites) or are biochemically active (bioactive metabolites) in marine and freshwater, extensive and intensive aquaculture systems. For the scope of this paper, biochemically active metabolites include (1) toxins that can cause mortality in aquaculture organisms or have the potential to harm consumers via accumulation in the product (hepatotoxins, cytotoxins, neurotoxins, dermatoxins, and brine shrimp/molluskal toxins), (2) metabolites that may degrade the nutritional status of aquaculture species (inhibitors of proteases and grazer deterrents) or (3) metabolites that have the potential to negatively affect the general health of aquaculture species or aquaculture laborers (dermatoxins, irritant toxins, hepatotoxins, cytotoxins). Suggestions are made as to future management practices in intensive and extensive aquaculture and the potential exposure pathways to aquaculture species and human consumers are identified. 相似文献

This article is a discussion of the “discourse on the unthinkable” surrounding potential future democratic engagements with rivers as non‐human persons or natural objects. In the context of the Asia–Pacific region, this article suggests that the developments in material philosophy entitled “new materialism” are essential tools in the reconceptualisation of rivers as democratic entities but that local socio‐historical conditions must also be taken into the account. In order to make its case, the article not only surveys the context for considering rivers as non‐human persons in a juridical context but also discusses the new material context that assists modern democracies in the renegotiation of the demos that forms the body politic of democracy – often in the face of neoliberal exploitation and a legacy of extremes in instrumentalism. The article argues that the incorporation of water in the democratic project of enfranchisement is an essential exercise born of many Western beliefs and ideals but articulated uniquely at a regional and national level. 相似文献

Changes in the relative genetic performance of genotypes across environments are referred to as genotype × environment interactions (GEIs). GEIs can affect barley breeding improvement for salt tolerance because it often complicates the evaluation and selection of superior genotypes. The present study evaluated the GEIs over 60 barley genotypes for yield components and grain yield in six salinity environments in North Delta, Egypt. Data were analyzed using the additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) and Tai’s stability parameters. GEIs effects on yield explained 20.3, 20.1, 14.6, and 33.0% of the total variation besides, the first two principal components account for 67.3, 56.3, 64.3, and 83.7% of the explained variance in the four sets, respectively. Six genotypes namely G-4, G-7, G-20, G-34, G-36, and G-39 were found to be most stable and high yielding across environments (GY >2.00 t ha-1), and located close to zero projection onto the AEC ordinate. Tai’s stability parameters demonstrated that these genotypes were more responsive to the environmental changes. The genotypes G-50 and G-53 showed perfect/static stability (α = -0.95, -0.91, respectively). In contrast, the genotype; G-36 had α = 0 and λ = 1.10, indicating parallel with the environmental effects followed by G-44. Overall, we found that GEIs for grain yield are highly significant in all sets, suggesting that responded differently across environments. This interaction may be a result of changes in genotypes’ relative performance across environments, due to their differential responses to various abiotic factors. 相似文献

The structure and mechanical properties of onions are important factors affecting their textural quality. The onion bulb consists of several layers of pigmented, papery scales surrounding fleshy storage scales that comprise an upper epidermis, an intermediate parenchyma tissue, and a lower epidermis. The purpose of this study was to examine the chemical composition of cell walls from the papery scales and outer fleshy scales of onion (Allium cepa L. cv. Sturon) in relation to their mechanical properties. Cell-wall material (CWM) was prepared from the component tissues and analyzed for its carbohydrate and phenolic composition. The CWMs were rich in uronic acid and glucose, with smaller quantities of arabinose, galactose, and xylose. In the fleshy scales, the lower epidermis contained relatively more galactose-rich pectic polysaccharides, whereas the upper epidermis and the papery scales contained virtually no galactose. Analysis of mechanical properties showed that the order of strength of the tissues was papery scales > fleshy scales, which were in the order lower epidermis > upper epidermis > intermediate parenchyma. The upper epidermis of fleshy scales was stronger in the vertical than the horizontal direction, and both orientations showed negligible notch sensitivity. Cyclohexane-trans-1,2-diaminetetraacetate-induced vortex-induced cell separation of the intermediate layer of fleshy scales indicated that calcium cross-linking may play an important role in cell-cell adhesion. A small but significant amount of ferulic acid was found in the walls, predominantly in the thick cuticle of the lower epidermis of fleshy scales. The proportional contribution of atmospheric N2 to the N nutrition of lupin (P
atm) was estimated in a field experiment following addition of NH4Cl of KNO3 to unconfined microplots (1.5 m2) at 2.5 g N m-2 (10 atom% 15N). The integrated 15N enrichment, or mean pool abundance, of nitrate extracted from 0- to 15-cm samples taken under the lupin crop on eight occasion between 28 and 190 days after sowing was used as the reference criterion to estimate P
atm by the 15N-isotope dilution technique. Estimates of P
atm were similar to those obtained using canola as a non-fixing reference plant, but were higher than estimates obtained using a yield-dependent model. Use of mean pool abundance obviates the need for a non-fixing reference plant, and the frequent sampling and isotope-ratio analysis of the legume biomass required with the yield-dependent model is unnecessary. Abstract. Experiments were set up at two sites to measure nitrogen (N) leaching loss from applications of separated pig/cattle slurry and cattle farmyard manure(FYM), during winters 1990/91–1993/94 (site A) and from broiler litter and FYM, during winters 1990/91–1992/93 (site B). The manures were applied at a target rate of 200 kg ha-1 total N during the autumn and winter to overwinter fallow or top dressed onto winter rye. The total N in leachate was calculated from leachate N concentrations, in samples collected using ceramic cups buried at 90 cm, and an estimate of drainage volume. Nitrogen losses were greatest following manure applications in September, October and November but losses following applications in December or January were not significantly elevated above those from untreated controls. Losses were consistently lower from FYM than from broiler litter or separated slurry. The presence of a cover crop (winter rye) significantly reduced overall N leaching compared with the fallow, but only reduced the manure N leaching losses at one site during one winter when a high proportion of drainage occurred late. The incorporation of a nitrification inhibitor (DCD) with manures applied in October did not significantly reduce the manure N leaching. 相似文献
