Studies on stem profile of teak (Tectona grandis) hardly exist. This can be possibly attributed to the occurrence of forks that is prevalent on teak trees. Stem profile model was therefore developed for teak in West Africa, which took into account the occurrence of forks. Trees were destructively sampled from Moist Evergreen Forest (MEF), Moist Semi-deciduous Forest (MSDF), Dry Semi-deciduous Forest (DSDF) and Savannah ecological zones in both Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire for the study. A single set of parameters could be used explicitly to predict stem profile of any teak tree, irrespective of country, eco-climatic zone, edaphic variables, site index, tree age, stand density and tree competition. The model efficiency and root mean square error (in relative diameter) were calculated to be 0.97 and 0.053, respectively. The relative position of the forks along the stem bole, with respect to total tree height, was highly variable and did not follow any particular trend, except higher value for the first fork in the Moist Evergreen Forest zone. However, average tree height to the first fork decreased along the ecological gradient from MEF, MSDF and DSDF to Savannah. The extent of diameter reduction due to the forks could be predicted. Relative tree form for zero-forked, one-forked and two-forked trees was calculated to be 0.39, 0.36 and 0.33, respectively. Relative loss of stem volume due to one fork and two forks was estimated to be 6.5 and 13.9%, respectively. The measured stem volume when related to the corresponding predicted value yielded coefficient and intercept not significantly different from unity and zero, respectively, with an r2 value of 0.97. 相似文献

The effects of propiconazole on extra-cellular enzyme levels in Trametes versicolor have been investigated during wood colonization and degradation. The working hypothesis was that the biocide could alter
metabolic pathways, which could lead to an alteration of extra-cellular enzyme production. In the presence of a propiconazole
sub-lethal concentration, the wood degradation rate decrease concomitantly with the lag phase of fungal development observed
during wood colonisation. The pattern of production of enzymes involved in polysaccharide degradation (β-glucosidases, glucuronidases,
cellobiohydrolases), nitrogen (leucine aminopeptidase) and phosphorus (acid phosphatase) mobilization was only slightly altered
in the presence of the biocide. In experiments performed in the presence of propiconazole, there was a strong induction of
chitinases at the beginning of the colonization process. Addition of caffeine, a pleiotropic drug, which is also a chitinase
inhibitor, together with propiconazole resulted in synergistic inhibition of the fungal growth. The implication of these results

Al chemistry was studied in two acidic watersheds, one with a podzol, the other with an acid brown soil, in the Vosges mountains (N.E. France), by analysing both leaching and centrifugation soil solutions and spring waters over 3 yr. In the podzol, Al was mobilized in the eluvial horizons under the predominant influence of organic acidity, then leached down the profile as organic and F-bound Al. Strong undersaturation with respect to proto-imogolite and imogolite showed that the proto-imogolite theory of podzolization could not apply. Al was transferred from the soil to spring water mostly as Al3+ and Al-F. Al3+, as well as additional minor species (AlOH2+, AlSO4 +), originated from the redissolution of the top of the spodic horizons under the influence of both soil solution acidity and the occurrence of mobile anions derived from atmospheric deposition. Conversely, in the acid brown soil, Al mobilization was regulated by nitrate and occurred mainly as Al3+. Most of Al was retained in the deep soil and only traces of monomeric Al reached spring water. In the podzol eluvial horizons, soil solutions were undersaturated with respect to all relevant mineral phases and their chemical composition agree with the concept of a mobilization of Al from the solid soil organic Al and a control of Al3+ activity by complexation reaction with the solid and soluble soil organic matter and F. In the acid brown soil, soil solutions were found to be in equilibrium with natural alunite, and the formation of this mineral, if confirmed, would account for the occurrence of 'open' vermiculites instead of the expected hydroxy-Al interlayered vermiculites. Al solubility control in surface water of both watersheds remains unclear. The Al-F species in both watersheds and the likely control of Al solubility by alunite in the acid brown soil emphasize the influence of acid deposition on Al chemistry in acid watersheds. 相似文献

Habitat fragmentation is a major cause for species loss, but its effect on invertebrates with low active dispersal power,
like terrestrial gastropods, has rarely been studied. Such species can not cross a hostile habitat matrix, for which the predictions
of island theory, such as positive relations between species richness and patch size, should apply. In order to test this
prediction, we studied gastropod species diversity by assessing gastropod assemblage characteristics from 35 sites in 19 fragments
of deciduous old-growth forests in the Lower Rhine Embayment, Germany. Assemblages differed between larger (≥700 ha) and smaller
forests (<400 ha), those of large forests held a higher percentage of forest species. Although α-diversity was similar between
the two forest size classes, small forests often comprised matrix species, resulting in a higher β-diversity. Edge effects
on the species richness of matrix species were noticeable up to 250 m into the forest. Hierarchical partitioning revealed
that distance to disturbances (external edge, internal edges like roads) explained most assemblage variables, whereas forest
size and woodland cover within a 1 km radius from the sites explained only a few assemblage variables. Densities of two forest-associated
species, Discus rotundatus and Arion fuscus, decreased with forest size. Yet, forest size was positively correlated with richness of typical forest species and densities
of Limax cinereoniger. The latter species seems to need forests of >1,000 ha, i.e., well above the size of most fragments. In conclusion, the prediction
is valid only for forest species. The response to fragmentation is species specific and seems to depend on habitat specialization
and macroclimatic conditions.

BACKGROUND: To check for correlation between the insecticidal properties and the specificity of lectins, a comparative study was made of the insecticidal activities of two garlic lectins with different biological activities.RESULTS: The insecticidal activity of the garlic (Allium sativum L.) leaf lectin ASAL and bulb lectin ASAII towards the tobacco aphid Myzus nicotianae Blackman was studied using bioassays with transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Wisconsin 38). Bioassays were started with newborn nymphs of the tobacco aphid. Although during the first 7-8 days when nymphs developed to adults there were no apparent effects, part of the nymphal population was found to develop into winged (alate) forms. Later it became clear that transgenic plants expressing ASAL and ASAII had a significant effect on the reproduction capacity of the resulting adults, with a reduction of up to 40%. Different life table parameters such as prereproductive time, intrinsic rate of natural increase, generation time and doubling time were significantly affected (P < 0.05) in aphids grown on transgenic plant material expressing ASAL and ASAII.CONCLUSION: Bioassays with tobacco plants expressing ASAL and ASAII demonstrated a significant impact on the population growth of M. nicotianae. This study was performed to investigate the diagnostic relevance of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) high resolution electrophoresis. The laboratory technique was applied to 100 paired samples of canine CSF and serum, with paired samples tested during the same analytical run, as recommended in human medicine. Ninety four of the dogs had a neurological disease and 6 healthy dogs served as a control group. A strong linear correlation between CSF total protein concentration and the albumin quota (AQ) was found in the control group and in the inflammatory (infectious or noninfectious), neoplastic, and miscellaneous groups: AQ = 0.015 CSF total protein--0.102, r = 0.990. This correlation suggests that an increased CSF total protein concentration can be an indicator of blood brain barrier dysfunction. The highest median AQ value was found in the aseptic suppurative meningitis group, but no statistical differences were found between this and the other groups. The AQ, calculated with this technique, did not provide any additional information. Moreover, although unexpected, the electrophoretic profiles were not characteristic of any particular disease. In conclusion, this study did not confirm high resolution electrophoresis of paired CSF and serum samples to be a valuable ancillary diagnostic tool for canine neurological diseases. 相似文献

Introducing nitrogen-fixing tree species in fast-growing eucalypt plantations has the potential to improve soil nitrogen availability compared with eucalypt monocultures. Whether or not the changes in soil nutrient status and stand structure will lead to mixtures that out-yield monocultures depends on the balance between positive interactions and the negative effects of interspecific competition, and on their effect on carbon (C) uptake and partitioning. We used a C budget approach to quantify growth, C uptake and C partitioning in monocultures of Eucalyptus grandis (W. Hill ex Maiden) and Acacia mangium (Willd.) (treatments E100 and A100, respectively), and in a mixture at the same stocking density with the two species at a proportion of 1 : 1 (treatment MS). Allometric relationships established over the whole rotation, and measurements of soil CO(2) efflux and aboveground litterfall for ages 4-6 years after planting were used to estimate aboveground net primary production (ANPP), total belowground carbon flux (TBCF) and gross primary production (GPP). We tested the hypotheses that (i) species differences for wood production between E. grandis and A. mangium monocultures were partly explained by different C partitioning strategies, and (ii) the observed lower wood production in the mixture compared with eucalypt monoculture was mostly explained by a lower partitioning aboveground. At the end of the rotation, total aboveground biomass was lowest in A100 (10.5 kg DM m(-2)), intermediate in MS (12.2 kg DM m(-2)) and highest in E100 (13.9 kg DM m(-2)). The results did not support our first hypothesis of contrasting C partitioning strategies between E. grandis and A. mangium monocultures: the 21% lower growth (ΔB(w)) in A100 compared with E100 was almost entirely explained by a 23% lower GPP, with little or no species difference in ratios such as TBCF/GPP, ANPP/TBCF, ΔB(w)/ANPP and ΔB(w)/GPP. In contrast, the 28% lower ΔB(w) in MS than in E100 was explained both by a 15% lower GPP and by a 15% lower fraction of GPP allocated to wood growth, thus partially supporting our second hypothesis: mixing the two species led to shifts in C allocations from above- to belowground, and from growth to litter production, for both species. 相似文献

The rate constants for soil degradation and alkaline hydrolysis of two herbicides, metsulfuron-methyl and thifensulfuron-methyl, have been determined. In order to explain the difference in behaviour of the two compounds, the chemical and enzymatic hydrolysis of some ortho-substituted methyl benzoates and methyl 3-substituted thiophene-2-carboxylates were studied.
