Contrast‐enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) is increasingly available for veterinary patients, however limited studies describe the use of this method for characterizing intrathoracic mass lesions. The aim of this prospective, observational study was to describe CEUS enhancement patterns for intrathoracic mass lesions in a sample of cats and dogs. Sixty patients (36 dogs, 24 cats) were included. Standardized CEUS examinations were performed for 41 pulmonary masses (68%) and 19 mediastinal masses (32%). Final diagnosis was based on cytology and/or histopathology. Absolute time to enhancement (TTE) values were recorded for the intrathoracic mass lesions and spleen. The spleen was used as a reference parenchymal organ to calculate relative TTE (rTTE) values. Absolute TTE of the spleen and intrathoracic mass lesions differed for dogs and cats (P = 0.001). The rTTE values significantly differed between lesions of neoplastic versus non‐neoplastic origin (P = 0.004). The majority of neoplastic pulmonary masses were supplied by bronchial arteries (63%), while most nonneoplastic pulmonary masses were supplied by pulmonary arteries (78%). The sensitivity and specificity for detecting pulmonary neoplastic masses with rTTE were 63% and 78%, respectively. Enhancement patterns for mediastinal thymomas and lymphomas significantly differed (P = 0.002). Thymomas enhanced heterogeneously in a centripetal pattern (86%), whereas lymphomas typically enhanced uniformly in a centrifugal pattern (75%). Findings indicated that CEUS is a feasible method for characterizing intrathoracic mass lesions in dogs and cats, however, the diagnostic sensitivity for detecting neoplastic pulmonary masses was low.  相似文献

Summary The effects of mancozeb (fungicide) and lindane (insecticide) were investigated in active soil ciliates, testaceans, rotifers, and nematodes. The effects were evaluated 1, 7, 15, 40, 65, and 90 days after application of a standard and a high (10x) dose. Individual numbers were estimated with a direct counting method. Mancozeb, even at the high dose, had no pronounced acute or long-term effects on absolute numbers of the taxa investigated. The number of ciliate species, which decreased 1 day after treatment with the normal dose (0.05 <P < 0.1), soon recovered. However, the community structure of ciliate species was still slightly altered after 90 days. Testaceans were not reduced before day 15 at the higher dose or before day 40 at the normal one (0.05 <P < 0.1). A normal dose of lindane caused acute toxicity in ciliates and rotifers (P < 0.05) but the latter soon recovered. The number and community structure of ciliate species were still distinctly altered after 90 days (0.05 <P <0.1), indicating the critical influence of lindane. Testaceans were reduced only after day 15, and nematodes only on day 40 (0.05 <P < 0.1). At the high dose of lindane severe long-term effects occurred in soil moisture, total rotifers (P < 0.05), total nematodes (0.05 <P <0.1), and in the structure of the ciliate community. Generally, there were marked differences in the effect of the normal and the high dose of lindane but not with mancozeb. Ciliates showed very pronounced changes after the pesticide applications, indicating their usefulness for testing biocides under field conditions. Two experimental parainfluenza type 3 virus (PI3V) challenge studies were undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of a single intranasal dose of an attenuated live vaccine containing modified live bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) and temperature-sensitive PI3V in 3-week-old calves. In the first study, vaccine efficacy was evaluated in colostrum deprived calves. Nasal shedding of PI3V was highly significantly reduced in vaccinated calves challenged 10 days or 21 days after vaccination. In the second study, vaccine efficacy was assessed in calves with maternal antibodies against PI3V by challenge 66 days post-vaccination. Vaccination also significantly reduced PI3V excretion after challenge in this study. In both studies, clinical signs after challenge were very mild and were not different between vaccinated and control calves.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung In den Jahren 1964 bis 1974 wurden 362 Winter- und 738 Sommergersten mit einer lokalen Population vonUstilago nuda geprüft. Zur Kennzeichnung der Virulenz des Infektionsmaterials ist das Verhalten von Trägern bekannter Resistenzgene angegeben. Resistenz (0 ... 10% Befall) zeigten 197 oder 18% der 1100 Gersten. Mäßig resistent bis mäßig anfällig (>10 ... 30% Befall) waren 146 oder 13% dieses Sortiments. Als anfällig wurden 69% der Kollektion bewertet.Im Zusammenhang mit diesen Ergebnissen wird auf die Literatur zur Genetik der Flugbrandresistenz und auf Kombinationen mit anderen Resistenzmerkmalen eingegangen.

Summary During the years 1964–74 362 winter and 738 spring barleys were inoculated with a local smut population. Its virulence is described by the reactions of varieties with identified resistance genes.Of the 1100 varieties tested 197 were resistant (0 ... 10% infection), 146 showed >10 ... 30% infection, and 69 per cent of this collection were classified as susceptible, with infection exceeding 30%.In connection with these results literature on smut resistance and the combination with resistance to other diseases are discussed.

Testacea were observed ingesting nematodes in the litter horizons of native forests in New Zealand. Nematodes were most commonly attacked from the tail end but some specimens were attacked at mid-body. Nematodes with damaged tails were recovered in greatest numbers from the highest, wettest site sampled. Nebela (Apodera) vas (Certes, 1989) and Difflugia sp. (possibly lanceolata Penard, 1890) were the predators; both species were redescribed using light and scanning electron microscopy and morphometry. Most damaged nematodes were Ironus sp. but Clarkus, Tobrilus, Iotonchus, Cobbonchus, Dorylaimus and Plectus were also attacked. In dogs, secondary polycythemia (SP) may be associated with polyuria and polydipsia (PU/PD). The pathogenesis of this PU/PD has not yet been explained. We hypothesized that hyperviscosity and increased blood volume in SP might affect vasopressin (VP) release, resulting in PU/PD. This hypothesis was tested in 2 dogs with SP caused by renal neo-plasia and PU/PD. Osmoregulation of VP release was studied by a modified water deprivation test and by investigating the VP response to hypertonic saline infusion.
Water deprivation test results were consistent with an inability to produce concentrated urine despite increasing plasma osmolality. During hypertonic saline infusion, the osmotic threshold of VP release was markedly increased in both dogs, resulting in a delayed VP response to increasing plasma osmolality. The sensitivity of VP release was low normal in both dogs. We conclude that blood hyperviscosity and increased blood volume led to impaired VP release and polyuria.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Von 380 Winter- und 1400 Sommergersten des Sortiments Gatersleben wurde in Halle das Verhalten gegen die virulente Rasse 24 vonPuccinia striiformis West, untersucht. Als hochresistent erwiesen sich 5 Winter- und 43 Sommerformen. Ein großer Teil dieser Sommergersten, darunter auch wertvolle Kombinationen von Gelbrost- mit Zwergrost- bzw. Mehltauresistenz, stammen aus Aethiopien. Resistenz zeigten weitere 88 Proben oder ca. 5% des Sortiments. In 12% lagen Gemische anfälliger mit resistenten Pflanzen vor. 80% der Gersten waren mäßig bis stark anfällig für Gelbrost.
Summary Stripe rust reaction of 380 winter and 1400 spring barley varieties of the Gatersleben collection was tested in the greenhouse as well as in the disease nursery by artificial infection with the virulent race 24 ofPuccinia striiformis West. Five winter and 43 spring barley varieties have proved to be highly resistant. A large number of the latter were collected in Ethiopia, among them are useful combinations of stripe rust with dwarf rust resistance and mildew resistance, respectively. Resistance was shown by other 88 varieties or by about 5% of the total. Susceptible as well as resistant plants were found in 12% of the samples. 80% of the varieties were moderately or highly susceptible to stripe rust.

Changes in the distribution of muscle-fiber-types from the M. longissimus dorsi of male pigs. A Histochemical Approach Samples of the M. longissimus dorsi from growing up pigs were taken by a shooting-biopsy. The types of muscle-fibers could be demonstrated by two different histochemical staining procedures. With these two histochemical staining procedures significant differences between the different structure of the muscle-fibers during increasing age of the pigs could be detected.  相似文献
