The study analyzed 108 films released during the transformation agenda period. The proportion, frequency, centrality and framing of agricultural content in the movies were reviewed. Data obtained were described using frequency counts and percentages. One out of three movies screened had agricultural content, which was either one or two scenes in the movie (80.0%). Such content was mostly peripheral (89.0%) to the themes of the films and negatively framed (60.0%). Potentials of the industry for agricultural purposes were poorly utilized by government. Government should partner with Nollywood to portray agriculture in a positive light for improved citizens’ attitude toward agriculture.  相似文献

Juvenile cultured sandfish (Holothuria scabra) with a mean size of 35.6 mm±11.4 S.D. were released on soft substrata near mangrove–seagrass and lagoonal coral reef flat habitats in the Western Province of Solomon Islands. Mean survival of H. scabra at the mangrove–seagrass sites was 95–100% 1 h after release and approximated 70% 3 days later. At the coral reef flat sites, however, mean survival was as low as 37.5% 1 h after release and total mortality occurred in two of the three releases within 48 h. Mortality of the juvenile H. scabra was due mainly to predation by fish in the families Balistidae, Labridae, Lethrinidae and Nemipteridae. Survival of juvenile H. scabra was improved significantly by releasing them within a cage of 8-mm mesh. This procedure resulted in 100% survival of juveniles in the coral reef flat habitat during the course of the experiment. Our data indicate that mangrove–seagrass areas should be suitable habitats for release of cultured juvenile sandfish in restocking and stock enhancement programs. Release of sandfish at night, to coincide with the time they emerge during their inherent diel burrowing cycle, and the short-term use of protective cages, should be investigated to improve survival of individuals released in mangrove–seagrass habitats.  相似文献

Vascular wilt of oil palm caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. elaeidis (Foe) is a devastating disease in West and Central Africa. As the oil palm industry in southeast Asia is still expanding, so is the oil palm germplasm collection through the importation of seed and pollen from Africa, the centre of diversity for Elaeis guineensis. There is a risk of inadvertent spread of the disease on contaminated seed or pollen. Regular re‐evaluation of the reaction of currently grown palm genotypes towards Foe is clearly required for biosecurity. This study has demonstrated that four Malaysian oil palm progenies, three in current or recent commercial use, are highly susceptible to infection by at least one of two African isolates of Foe, representing different countries, aggressiveness and vegetative compatibility groups. Symptoms and reduction of palm growth generally reflected the extent and intensity of systemic colonization by Foe. Progeny PK 5463 expressed partial resistance to Foe isolate F3, but not to isolate 16F, displaying significantly milder symptoms and supporting less widespread vascular colonization. This relatively incompatible interaction was used to study expression of potential defence‐related genes during root infection when compared to a susceptible palm–isolate combination. The only significant response was an early up‐regulation of chitinase in resistant palms. The research revealed at least one progeny–isolate differential interaction, and the associated resistance expression suggests a component of tolerance, because colonization by Foe was systemic in both compatible and incompatible combinations.  相似文献

During the spring of 2006, three willow varieties (SV1, SX67 and 9882-41) were established on marginal land in an agroforestry tree-intercropping arrangement where plots of short rotation willows were planted between rows (spaced 15?m apart) of 21-year-old mixed tree species. As a control, the same varieties were established on an adjacent piece of land without established trees (conventional willow system). This study investigated the magnitude of carbon pools, fine root and leaf biomass inputs and clone yields in both the tree-based intercropping (agroforestry) and conventional monocropping systems. Willow biomass yield was significantly higher in the agroforestry field (4.86?odt?ha?1?y?1) compared to the conventional field (3.02?odt?ha?1?y?1). In both fields, varieties SV1 and SX67 produced higher yields than the variety 9882-41. Willow fine root biomass in the top 20?cm of soil was significantly higher in the intercropping system (3,062?kg?ha?1) than in the conventional system (2,536?kg?ha?1). Differences in fine root biomass between clones were similar to that observed for differences in biomass yield: SV1?>?SX67?>?9882-41. Leaf input was higher in the intercropping system (1,961?kg?ha?1) than in the conventional system (1,673?kg?ha?1). Clonal differences in leaf inputs followed the same trends as those for root biomass and yield: SV1?>?SX67?>?9882-41. Soil organic carbon was significantly higher in the agroforestry field (1.94?%) than in the conventional field (1.82?%). A significant difference in soil organic carbon was found between the three clones: soils under clone 9882-41 had the lowest soil organic carbon at 1.80?%.  相似文献

One hundred and fifty goats were diagnosed as having proven gangrenous mastitis. The disease was categorized into early, intermediate and late stages. Gangrenous mastitis in goats is typified by a sudden onset, dark hyperemia, and edema with progressive discoloration of the distal part of the udder. The disease affected lactating goats but not the dry ones. Coagulase positive Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 60% of composite and half milk samples obtained from the diseased goats. The histopathological changes mainly comprised proliferation of connective tissue, thrombosis and necrosis involving a group of lobules. Treatment of the early and intermediate stages of the disease was successful through the administration of systemic and intramammary terramycin together with diuretics and topical antiseptic cream. The late stage of the disease was successfully treated only through surgery.  相似文献

Six camels were experimentally infected with two strains of Brucella abortus, four with S19 and two with a field bovine strain. In all cases antibody titres were detected within 6 to 11 days. Serum agglutination titres peaked between days 11 and 32 and complement fixation titres between days 11 and 52; both titres then declined steadily. No clinical signs were observed in the four camels inoculated with S19. Slight non-specific symptoms were seen in the two camels infected with the field bovine strain. On post mortem examination no gross lesions were observed although histopathological sections showed focal granulomata in the liver and a generalized lymphadenitis. The organism was recovered mainly from the lymph nodes of the head and genital tract.  相似文献

Culicoides brevitarsis is the main biting midge responsible for the transmission of bluetongue and Akabane viruses to livestock in Australia. Models are given for its dispersal after winter from endemic areas at the southern limit of its distribution in New South Wales (NSW); the models might also be applicable elsewhere. Model 1 shows that dispersal can be explained by distance from a key point just outside the endemic area in mid-northern/northern coastal NSW. The model provides probability data for times of first occurrence at sites within regions down the southern coastal plain or up the Hunter Valley towards (but rarely reaching) the western slopes and tablelands. Model 2 shows that the movement depends on temperature and wind speed from northerly and easterly directions. Preliminary data also are given to suggest a relationship between density in the endemic area and the maximum distance that C. brevitarsis can travel in a given year. The models can be linked to other information which in combination can provide probabilities for winter survival outside the endemic area, times of occurrence at sites where it cannot survive winter and times when activity ceases naturally at these sites at the end of the season. This information can be used to predict the potential for virus transmission and indicate zones of seasonal freedom from both vector and virus for the export of livestock.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to quantify the differences in the nutritive value over 4 seasons, of 7 C3 temperate grasses, 2 C4 tropical grasses and 11 clover species used as forages for dairy cows. The nutritive value was assessed in terms of nutrient content and the availability of effective rumen degradable protein, rumen by pass protein, metabolisable protein (MP) and fermentable metabolisable energy.

All species were grown in plots as monocultures under conditions of non limiting nutrients and moisture and harvested by mechanical means. All species had a high crude protein content and this resulted in a high effective rumen degradable protein: fermentable metabolisable energy ratio varying from 15, for cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata) to 29 for birdsfoot clover (Lotus corniculatus), and all were above the ratio of 11 required for optimal microbial protein synthesis in the rumen of dairy cows. The calculated availability of MP varied from 105 g/kg dry matter (DM) for cowpeas to 173 g/kg DM for berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum) indicating that all forages would be able to meet the requirements of dairy cows producing up to 30 L/milk/day, provided they were able to consume over 19 kg DM of forage/cow/day.

Grasses had much higher hemicellulose (neutral detergent fibre minus acid detergent fibre) content than legumes. Kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum), a C4 grass, had a higher proportion of hemicellulose content than the C3 temperate grasses. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and kikuyu had a similar metabolisable energy (ME) density (9.9 MJ/kg DM) in summer. The mean ME density of perennial ryegrass, prairie grass (Bromus wildinowii) and short rotation ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) winter was similar at 10.6 MJ/kg DM and slightly higher than cocksfoot (Dactylus glomeratus), phalaris (Phalaris tuberosa) and fescue (Fescue arundunicea) which had a mean ME density of 10 MJ/kg DM.

All forages grown were able to satisfy MP and ME requirements of dairy cows producing up to 30 L milk/cow/day, provided they were able to consume sufficient forage to achieve this level of production.  相似文献

The antagonistic and enzymatic activities of non‐pathogenic hymenomycetes naturally occurring on oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) trunks were assessed to determine their potential as biocontrol agents against G. boninense. Twenty‐five Basidiomycota were isolated on a Ganoderma‐selective medium and identified using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing. The three fungi with potentially higher antagonistic activity against G. boninense, based on the percentage inhibition of radial mycelial growth (PIRG) in dual culture, were Pycnoporus sanguineus (84%), Trametes lactinea (82%) and Grammothele fuligo (81%). In addition to these three isolates, Lentinus tigrinus and a Rigidoporus sp. were also able to invade sterilized oil palm blocks previously colonized by G. boninense despite having lower PIRG values. Colonization of oil palm blocks by G. fuligo, P. sanguineus, Rigidoporus sp., T. lactinea and L. tigrinus resulted in mass losses of 32.50, 30.78, 27.64, 25.20 and 19.33%, respectively, probably due to an ability to produce one or more lignocellulolytic enzyme. Further work is needed to determine the enzymatic degradation potential of these fungi under natural conditions and their possible use in the prevention of colonization of oil palm by G. boninense.  相似文献
