Time of nitrogen fertilizer application on crop recovery was studied in a field experiment at Foulumgaard, Denmark, in 2001. A solution of 15N-ammonium-15N-nitrate was applied in bands parallel to a single row of spring wheat grown in frames of 30 cm×40 cm. The labelled fertilizer was applied on 16 dates with intervals of 4–5 days from tillering to the start of grain-filling. Crop 15N recovery increased by 0.47%-point day?1 when the time of fertilizer application was postponed from tillering until the second node stage (GS32). On the other hand, a decrease in crop 15N recovery of –0.19%-point day?1 was recorded from GS47 to maturity (GS85–87). The effect of the 16 application times on 15N recovery was described by two straight lines having intersection at the time of full expanded flag leaf and ear emergence halfway (GS55). It was concluded that leaf area expansion is important for crop N demand and 15N recovery.  相似文献

Quantifying the local crop response to irrigation is important for establishing adequate irrigation management strategies. This study evaluated the effect of irrigation applied with subsurface drip irrigation on field corn (Zea mays L.) evapotranspiration (ETc), yield, water use efficiencies (WUE = yield/ETc, and IWUE = yield/irrigation), and dry matter production in the semiarid climate of west central Nebraska. Eight treatments were imposed with irrigation amounts ranging from 53 to 356 mm in 2005 and from 22 to 226 mm in 2006. A soil water balance approach (based on FAO-56) was used to estimate daily soil water and ETc. Treatments resulted in seasonal ETc of 580–663 mm and 466–656 mm in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Yields among treatments differed by as much as 22% in 2005 and 52% in 2006. In both seasons, irrigation significantly affected yields, which increased with irrigation up to a point where irrigation became excessive. Distinct relationships were obtained each season. Yields increased linearly with seasonal ETc (R2 = 0.89) and ETc/ETp (R2 = 0.87) (ETp = ETc with no water stress). The yield response factor (ky), which indicates the relative reduction in yield to relative reduction in ETc, averaged 1.58 over the two seasons. WUE increased non-linearly with seasonal ETc and with yield. WUE was more sensitive to irrigation during the drier 2006 season, compared with 2005. Both seasons, IWUE decreased sharply with irrigation. Irrigation significantly affected dry matter production and partitioning into the different plant components (grain, cob, and stover). On average, the grain accounted for the majority of the above-ground plant dry mass (≈59%), followed by the stover (≈33%) and the cob (≈8%). The dry mass of the plant and that of each plant component tended to increase with seasonal ETc. The good relationships obtained in the study between crop performance indicators and seasonal ETc demonstrate that accurate estimates of ETc on a daily and seasonal basis can be valuable for making tactical in-season irrigation management decisions and for strategic irrigation planning and management.  相似文献

Serum concentrations of iodine were determined after cattle were given ethylenediamine dihydriodide (EDDI) orally at dosages ranging from 0.0 (placebo) to 0.77 mg/kg of body weight/day. The serum iodine concentration was correlated with the dosage of EDDI. A rate of 0.11 mg EDDI/kg/day was correlated with serum iodine concentrations (20 to 80 micrograms/dl) previously found to be effective in preventing foot rot in cattle. A linear dose-response curve that was generated could be helpful in predicting dosage of EDDI if the serum iodine concentration is known.  相似文献

Vaccination against progressive atrophic rhinitis using a purified recombinant derivative of the Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT), was carried out. Ten pregnant gilts were vaccinated twice with the nontoxic derivative (dO) which apart from a lack of 121 amino acids had an amino acid sequence identical to PMT, while seven gilts were vaccinated with a purified, formaldehyde treated, native PMT and ten gilts served as non-vaccinated controls. The resulting piglets were inoculated intranasally with Bordetella bronchiseptica and toxigenic P. multocida. Among piglets from the nonvaccinated gilts all except one developed clinical atrophic rhinitis and 90% developed severe turbinate atrophy while only a few pigs in the vaccinated groups developed clinical or pathological signs of disease. Gilt colostra from the two vaccinated groups had similar mean anti-PMT titers and the mean titers in the offspring's sera from these groups were nearly identical throughout the study. No pigs born from unvaccinated gilts were seropositive until 8 wk of age (7 wk post-challenge) but 23% became seropositive at slaughter. The infection rate with toxigenic P. multocida in piglets and the total number of P. multocida colonies cultured from nasal swabs were significantly reduced at 5 wk and 8 wk of age in the vaccinated groups, when compared to controls. There was a significantly improved weight gain (greater than 9%) from birth to slaughter in offspring from vaccinated gilts. No significant differences in feed conversion rate or % lean meat were observed among the groups. The study showed the excellent immunoprotective properties of the nontoxic derivative of the PMT molecule.  相似文献

Grazing dormant forage under low-input heifer development strategies typically exposes cattle to low-quality forage. Protein supplementation while grazing dormant range can enhance heifer growth and reproductive performance. We examined resource utilization of heifers and the effects of dormant season grazing on residual vegetation characteristics under two supplementation management strategies. Approximately 100 weaned composite heifer calves were randomly selected and placed into one of two supplementation treatments in each of 2 yr, one receiving a free access 62% crude protein self-fed concentrate and the other receiving a daily hand-fed 20% crude protein cake. Grazing occurred from December (2015 and 2016) through March (2016 and 2017). Thirty transects were randomly located within each pasture for measuring vegetation quality and structure before and after grazing. Daily space use and behavior was evaluated for 21 individuals within each treatment using global positioning system (GPS) collars and resource utilization functions. Heifers supplemented with concentrated protein spent more time grazing per day than heifers supplemented with cake (6.92 ± 0.18, 6.24 ± 0.17 h). Relative use by heifers in the cake treatment was negatively related to horizontal distance from the supplement delivery site early to midwinter (β¯? = ? 0.41 ± 0.16, ? 0.53 ± 0.17). Both treatments selected grazing locations relative to standing biomass of perennial grasses (β¯? = 0.0005 ± 0.00004) and crude protein (β¯? = 0.12 ± 0.007). However, resource selection was highly variable among individuals for both supplementation treatments. We found no treatment effects on pre-post grazing differences in residual cover of litter, grass, forbs and shrubs (P > 0.24). However, the time period when grazing occurred had an effect on residual vegetation conditions (P < 0.01). Our results indicate high levels of variability in grazing site selection by heifers, suggesting future research should incorporate individual animal measurements in an attempt to account for individual animal variability.  相似文献

Current methods for determining plant age of shrub species require destructive sampling and annual growth ring analysis on the primary stem. Although individual plant ages can frequently be determined in this manner, the method is time consuming and of limited value for plants that have lost stem wood from stem splitting and rot. Nondestructive methods for estimating big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.) plant age would be useful in assessing stand age structure and population dynamics at variable spatial scales. The purpose of this study was to test a suite of traits for potential use in estimating mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana [Rydb.] Beetle) age. We evaluated traits including plant height, crown area, subcanopy litter depth, percent crown mortality, bark furrow depth, bark fiber length, circumference and diameter of plant basal stem, and circumference of secondary and tertiary branches. We measured and harvested basal cross-sections from 163 plants of varying sizes from five locations in central and south-central Utah. Plant age was determined from annual growth rings. Linear regression analyses revealed that stem diameter (r2 = 0.507 P < 0.0001) was the most highly correlated variable with plant age across all sites, followed by stem circumference (r2 = 0.474 P < 0.0001), secondary branch circumference (r2 = 0.360, P < 0.0001), tertiary branch circumference (r2 = 0.405, P < 0.0001), and bark fiber length (r2 = 0.373, P < 0.0001). Results support previous findings that stem girth has value for estimating mountain big sagebrush plant age and that this trait is a better indicator of age than any other tested traits. Although the relationship between stem diameter and plant age was significant, substantial stem size variability associated with plants of the same approximate age indicates that the method is most appropriate when precise age estimates are not required. This technique was developed specifically for mountain big sagebrush, but it is expected that it can be adapted for other sagebrush taxa.  相似文献
