The effects of ensiling temperature and duration of ensiling on the feeding quality of whole‐crop maize (Zea mays L.) silages were investigated. Samples of one cultivar of maize plants were collected from two different fields, grown in different years on sandy soils. Samples were collected when the whole‐plant dry matter content was approximately 330 g/kg. Maize plants were chopped and ensiled in mini silos at three different ambient temperatures (5, 12 and 18 °C). The ensiling temperature affected the ensiling fermentation processes, causing different rates of pH decline and different final pH values. Samples from the silos were taken after 0 (not ensiled, i.e. control), 4, 8 and 16 weeks of ensiling. The silage samples were not dried, but ground‐frozen under liquid nitrogen to pass a 1‐mm sieve. The gas production technique was used to evaluate the influence of the ensiling temperature and the duration of ensiling on the degradation of the silage samples in rumen fluid. The gas production was highest when the maize was ensiled at 12 °C (p < 0.0001). An increase in ensiling duration caused a decrease in silage pH, accompanied by a decrease in gas production (p < 0.0001). The decrease in gas production was linearly related to the decrease in pH at the three temperatures. The present study shows that both ensiling temperature and ensiling duration play a significant role in the rumen degradability of maize silage.  相似文献

The effect of shallow water table fluctuations on the evaporation and CO2 fluxes in a peatland is investigated. The fluxes of evaporation and net ecosystem exchange of carbon were measured from mid-spring to the end of summer in 2005 and 2006 and simulated independently with process models. The observed and modelled data were then compared along a gradient of water levels. Any variation along the gradient would imply an influence of the water table on the flux. It became evident that changes in the water table had no effect on the evaporation and CO2 fluxes of the peatland. A probable cause could be the high water content of the soil, even for the low water tables, and the stable thermal conductivity of the soil. This study has implications for current land use management, which is aimed at reducing CO2-emissions. Regulations are currently concerned with water table while this study shows that soil water content should be focused on as well.  相似文献

Two studies were conducted to determine the impact of supplementation of diets containing ensiled cassava leaves as the main protein source with synthetic amino acids, dl-methionine alone or with L-lysine. In study 1, a total of 40 pigs in five units, all cross-breds between Large White and Mong Cai, with an average initial body weight of 20.5 kg were randomly assigned to four treatments consisting of a basal diet containing 45% of dry matter (DM) from ensiled cassava leaves (ECL) and ensiled cassava root supplemented with 0%, 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.15% dl-methionine (as DM). Results showed a significantly improved performance and protein gain by extra methionine. This reduced the feed cost by 2.6%, 7.2% and 7.5%, respectively. In study 2, there were three units and in each unit eight cross-bred (Large White × Mong Cai) pigs with an initial body weight of 20.1 kg were randomly assigned to the four treatments. The four diets were as follows: a basal diet containing 15% ECL (as DM) supplemented with different amounts of amino acids l-lysine and dl-methionine to the control diet. The results showed that diets with 15% of DM as ECL with supplementation of 0.2% lysine +0.1% dl-methionine and 0.1% lysine +0.05% dl-methionine at the 20–50 kg and above 50 kg, respectively, resulted in the best performance, protein gain and lowest costs for cross-bred (Large White × Mong Cai) pigs. Ensiled cassava leaves can be used as a protein supplement for feeding pigs provided the diets contain additional amounts of synthetic lysine and methionine.  相似文献

On assessment for use in an AI stud, a 12‐month‐old bull was found to produce low volume ejaculates with 41% of the sperm having morphological abnormalities. No left epididymal tail was palpable and the head of the epididymis on the left was twice the size compared with the right. Ultrasound examination showed the left testis to contain a large central area of decreased echogenicity, which could be followed proximally to a 15‐mm echolucent lesion at the site of the epididymal head. Postmortem examination revealed a 15‐mm diameter cyst in the region of the left epididymal head, and absence of the body and tail of the epididymis. The mediastinum testis of the left testis was dilated, corresponding to the area of decreased echogenicity observed on ultrasonography. No left seminal vesicle was present and the ampulla was significantly smaller than the same structure on the right. Histological examination revealed incomplete or absent spermatogenesis involving the majority of seminiferous tubules in the left testis, and a small proportion of those of the right testis. The cystic structure at the site of the left epididymal head was lined by irregular, sometimes attenuated, epithelium and contained sparse spermatozoa. This case demonstrates the adverse impact, which segmental aplasia of the mesonephric duct had on the testicular and epididymal function of a bull, and highlights the importance of careful clinical assessment in its diagnosis.  相似文献

Four cases of megaoesophagus secondary to tiger snake envenomation are reported. History in all cases suggested megaoesophagus was not present prior to snake envenomation. Diagnosis of megaoesophagus was confirmed by thoracic radiography in all cases. One dog died of respiratory failure. The remaining three dogs recovered, with gradual resolution of clinical signs associated with megaoesophagus.  相似文献

A review is given of the comparative pathology of endometrial carcinomas regarding the incidence, the morphology, and the relation with endometrial hyperplasia. Compared to man, endometrial carcinomas in animals are fairly rare, except in rabbits, in cattle, and in a stock of Han: Wistar rats. In rabbits the endometrial carcinomas are mostly primary multiple and present in both horns. Histologically they are almost always adenocarcinomas. The histological structure can vary considerably with regard to the degree of differentiation. In cattle the endometrial carcinomas are mostly singular. Histologically they are mostly adenocarcinomas, often accompanied by formation of much dense fibrous tissue. In rats the endometrial carcinomas are mostly primary multiple adenocarcinomas. In man as well as in the rabbit and in the rat, relationships have been described between endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial carcinoma. It is striking that in the dog, a species in which endometrial hyperplasia very often occurs, endometrial carcinomas should be rare. The endometrial carcinoma in the rabbit as an animal model for human endometrial carcinoma is discussed extensively. In both species there are signs indicating relationships between endometrial carcinomas and sex hormones, especially oestrogens. The incidence in rabbits is very high. Endometrial carcinomas in rabbits can be transplanted subcutaneously in the same rabbit. They can also be cultured in vitro. Moreover the rabbit is a suitable species to study the progesterone/progesterone-receptor complex by determining the synthesis of the progesterone-induced protein uteroglobin which may be important in studying endometrial carcinomas. 1. The aim of the present study was to examine the influence of whole wheat inclusion and xylanase supplementation on the performance, apparent metabolisable energy (AME), digesta viscosity, and digestive tract measurements of broilers fed on wheat-based diets. The influence of the method of whole wheat inclusion (pre- or post-pelleting) was also compared. A 3 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used with three diet forms (648 g/kg ground wheat [GW], GW replaced by 200 g/kg of whole wheat before [WW1] or after cold-pelleting [WW2]) and two xylanase levels (0 and 1000 XU/kg diet). 2. Birds given diets containing whole wheat had improved weight gains, feed efficiency and AME compared to those fed on diets containing ground wheat. The relative gizzard weight of birds fed WW2 diets was higher than in those fed GW and WW1 diets. Pre-pelleting inclusion of whole wheat had no effect on relative gizzard weight. Post-pelleting inclusion of whole wheat resulted in greater improvements in feed efficiency and AME than the pre-pelleting treatment. 3. Xylanase supplementation significantly improved weight gain, feed efficiency and AME, irrespective of the wheat form used. Viscosity of the digesta in the duodenum, jejunum and ileum were reduced by xylanase addition. Xylanase supplementation reduced the relative weight of the pancreas. 4. Neither xylanase supplementation nor whole wheat inclusion influenced the relative weight and length of the small intestine. 5. Xylanase supplementation increased ileal villus height. A significant interaction between diet form and xylanase was observed for ileal crypt depth. Xylanase supplementation had no effect on crypt depth in birds fed on diets containing GW, but increased the crypt depth in WW2 diets. No significant effects of diet form and xylanase supplementation were observed for the thickness of the tunica muscularis layer of gizzard or villus height, crypt depth, goblet cell numbers or epithelial thickness in the ileum. 6. Improved performance observed with post-pelleting inclusion of whole wheat was associated with increased size of the gizzard and improved AME. The gizzard development hypothesis, however, will not explain the improvements observed with pre-pelleting inclusion of whole wheat, suggesting the involvement of other factors.  相似文献

Pork from the LM and semimembranosus muscle (SM) of 59 female Duroc-cross pigs with a mean carcass weight of 80.1 kg (SD = 3.2) were assessed for quality. The pigs were grown on diets containing either animal and plant products (the animal group) or plant products only (the plant group), with or without a supplement (0.31% of the diet) containing extra CLA, selenium, and vitamin E. The 45-min postmortem pH of LM was unaffected by dietary treatment (mean 6.44, SD = 0.21), but the ultimate pH (pHu) was lower for the supplemented animal group for both muscles within the animal group (P < 0.04). Water-holding capacity in terms of drip loss for SM and expressed juice levels for LM, but not cooking loss, was also lower for the supplemented animal group (P < 0.01), but this difference was reduced after adjustment to a constant pHu (P < 0.07). Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF) values were greater for the plant group for LM only (P < 0.05), both before and after pHu adjustment. Differences between dietary treatment groups for color (L*, a*, and b*) were small and seldom significant before or after pHu adjustment. Sensory assessment of LM samples (with 5% subcutaneous fat added) from 32 pigs (8 per group) for 8 odor notes and 11 flavor notes by a trained analytical sensory panel of 13 people revealed no differences between the groups, except that the percentage of instances in which a rancid odor was detected was greater for the supplemented plant group compared with the control plant group (25 vs. 12%). Differences (P < 0.001) were shown between the muscles such that, relative to SM, LM had lower pHu values, greater drip losses, greater WBSF values, greater L* values, and lower chroma values, but similar levels of cooking loss. It is concluded that the dietary treatments imposed to improve the nutritional value of pork had some effects on certain meat quality parameters, but that the overall effects on appearance and palatability were small and unlikely to be of practical importance.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary spray-dried bovine and porcine plasma and spray-dried bovine colostrum on growth performance and intestinal histology in weaner pigs. Thirty-two 21-day-old piglets (6.65 ± 0.14 kg) were allocated to receive one of four dietary treatments: control, bovine plasma, porcine plasma, and bovine colostrum at weaning and another 8 piglets were killed at weaning to provide baseline data. The experimental diets were offered ad libitum for one week, after which animals were killed and post-mortem measurements obtained. No differences in average daily feed intake and growth rate were observed among dietary treatment groups (P > 0.05). Baseline piglets had taller villi and shallower crypts (P < 0.05) in the proximal jejunum, mid jejunum and distal ileum than those observed a week after weaning, irrespective of dietary treatment. Weaning-related expansion of intestinal lamina propria CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocyte populations was observed (P < 0.05). Complex and variable treatment effects on villus height, crypt depth, villus and crypt goblet cell density, and lamina propria T cell density were observed, suggesting that the tested protein sources do not share a common or simple mode of action.  相似文献
