Several conclusions of importance to studies on the epidemiology of heartwater were drawn from an investigation in which the numbers of adult Amblyomma hebraeum ticks, to which a closed herd of Hereford cattle were exposed over a period of 6 1/2 years, were manipulated. With a tick Cowdria ruminantium infection rate of 3-5%, an endemically stable situation was created by dipping the herd only when an average of 10 adult male and female A. hebraeum ticks were counted on 10 animals. When the average was increased to 15 during the calving period, 97% of calves acquired a tick-mediated immunity at the age of 6 months. Because only adult ticks confined to the hindquarters are counted, this procedure is recommended as a feasible and practical guideline to stock owners wishing to determine a dipping programme that would ensure endemic stability. The indirect fluorescent antibody test gave a true reflection of the infection rate through ticks in calves 3-6 months old, but not in older animals that had been re-infected more than once. This is because on one hand antibody may persist for 2 years after withdrawal from tick exposure and on the other the artificial re-infection of cattle with a tick acquired immunity is not always followed by a rise in antibody titres and may even result in seronegativity. Four cows infected and re-infected through ticks, remained immune to challenge for 2 years after withdrawal from tick exposure. Within the confines of one farm 3 isolates of C. ruminantium that differed in pathogenicity and immunogenicity were recovered from ticks. A critical evaluation is made of reports in the literature on the block method of vaccination and the relevant factors that play a role in the immunization against heartwater are also discussed. The most important of these is the fact that in heartwater immunogenicity parallels pathogenicity. It is shown that the more severe the reaction of the host to the immunizing infection, the stronger its immunity to subsequent challenge. The importance of this principle in the block method is emphasized. Other factors that play a role are the average incubation periods recorded in the different domestic ruminants after experimental infection and differences in age and breed susceptibility. The survival rate of experimentally infected Bonsmara cattle and Merino sheep that were treated on different days of the febrile reaction also serve as a guideline to determine the day after infection on which block treatment can be applied. The danger of a fatal recrudescent infection if block treatment is given too early, necessitating additional treatment and close observation, is indicated. In conclusion, recommendations on the day of block treatment are made for each domestic ruminant species. It is emphasized that the other methods of immunization of large groups of animals, such as treatment only after the commencement of the febrile reaction determined by the daily recording of early morning temperatures, or the prolonged prophylactic chemotherapy of susceptible stock exposed to heavy tick challenge, are preferable to the block method. Sixteen grey duikers were culled on the farm Riekert 's Laager in the central Transvaal at irregular intervals from May 1979-March 1981. One trematode species, 3 cestode species and 16 nematode species were recovered from these animals. Of these the following are new helminth records for this antelope: Cooperia hungi , Cooperia neitzi , Cooperia pectinata , Trichostrongylus axei, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Trichostrongylus falculatus , Trichostrongylus instabilis , Impalaia tuberculata , Nematodirus sp. and Paramphistomum sp. In addition, 6 species of ixodid ticks were collected. These, in order of abundance, were Amblyomma hebraeum (55,9%), Rhipicephalus appendiculatus (36,6%), Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi (5,1%), Boophilus decoloratus (2,3%), Boophilus microplus (0,05%) and Haemaphysalis sp. (0,05%). Only 60 (2,8%) of the 2 118 ticks that were collected were adults. Of the 3 species of lice that were recovered, Linognathus zumpti zumpti was most abundant (58,9%), but, out of a total of 1 498 collected, 1 496 occurred on 1 animal only. Linognathus breviceps constituted 29,5% and Damalinia lerouxi 11,6% of the total. A total of 277 specimens of the hippoboscid fly Lipoptena paradoxa were collected from 12 of the 16 animals examined. Nineteen per cent and 32% of serologically positive sheep and goats in heartwater endemic areas of the Republic of South Africa were susceptible to challenge with, respectively, the Ball 3 and Welgevonden stocks of Cowdria ruminantium. There was good correlation between the results of the indirect fluorescent antibody test and immunity, since without exception all the seronegative animals reacted when they were challenged. The fact that only 74% of the seropositive sheep and goats were immune to challenge can probably be ascribed to the poor cross-protection between stocks of C. ruminantium and not to false positive serological reactions. 相似文献

Abstract In the past, veld condition in the Karoo was assessed using the ecological index method. This recently changed to the grazing‐index method on account of the differently estimated grazing‐index values being used. The principles governing the method of survey remain the same. The method employs canopy‐spread‐cover strikes to record the species composition of different sites. Anatrichosoma species are an unusual group of zoonotic trichuroid nematodes. Due to limited knowledge of their life cycle and diagnostic challenges, anatrichosomiasis has been reported only 3 times in domestic animals. A short-haired cat from central Windhoek, Namibia, presented with ulceration, swelling, and sepsis on all four paws, a severe generalized lymphadenopathy and considerable invasive eosinophilia. Histological analysis revealed epidermal hyperplasia, with severe serocellular crusting on the skin surface. One specimen revealed a series of thick-walled eggs within nematode segments with a few sections containing eggs with bioperculate appearance which is compatible with the Aphasmid group of nematodes, more specifically, the genus Anatrichosoma. Ivermectin treatment completely cleared the condition. This is the first report of Anatrichosoma sp. in the Republic of Namibia, identified from a unique location in the capital, Windhoek. 相似文献
